Donate here for El Tour De Tucson – We Get By Giving

For El Tour De Tucson I am raising funds  for multiple charities. Links Below!

Some press clippings about the ride. http://tucson.com/sports/local/local-cyclist-damion-alexander-is-everywhere-including-saturday-s-el/article_54c2535d-7c88-5358-bcff-1aa019e68479.amp.html

My intent is not only to raise much needed funds, but also to introduce Tucson to all of the incredible beneficiaries who benefit from El Tour De Tucson. Below are links to my page and I’ll be adding videos and links about each charity.

When you raise funds for a charity you receive a free entry into El Tour. As I’m riding for multiple charities and get one entry from each charity , and I’ll be donating the entries to El Grupo Youth Cycling to give kids an opportunity to experience the largest ride we have here in the Old Pueblo.

As much as I’d appreciate a donation, I’d prefer you register to ride for one of the charities yourself.  A nice bonus for you is each charity has “goodies” they give back to those who ride and raise funds. Every one is different, but all include an entry into El Tour De Tucson and an event shirt. One charity, Uphill into the Wind, will even provide you with a bike to use in the event if you do not have one. Many have cycling jerseys or kits, some have professional coaches, and group rides.

Talking about group training rides. If you are looking for people your speed to spin around with, I put out a ride list and am happy to add you to the mail list if you send an email to Damion@damionalexander.com . Please put “ride list” in the comments.

I will be adding additional charities and links on this page as I register for each as well as adding blogs on bikepilgrim.com with more details of what each of these charities do in the region. If you want to donate to one of the other charities I have not registered for yet, let me know and it will be the next one I sign up for.

Community Ride List November 11-18

This Thursday at the El Tour Expo, I’ll be sharing the latest plans for the Velodrome and bike park.  The presentation will be upstairs at 7PM in the same room they do the Platinum meetings.

This Sunday is the GABA Bike Swap. Just in time to pick up those last minute “Must Have” items for El Tour.

Sunday is the Mt Lemmon Marathon. If you follow me, you know I’m a HUGE supporter of getting out and being active. However, I’m a little frustrated that this event is the weekend before El Tour and will limit riding on the hill this Sunday.

This weekend is also the Vail 50/50. It is a 50K or 50 mile run on the Arizona Trail. I’m mentioning this so you don’t end up riding South of Colossal Cave Saturday morning or North of Colossal cave after noon. If you do, please be respectful of the runners, get off your bike, and let them pass. Courtesy is something I’m hearing we all need to work on. On that note, SDMB has a new campaign about sharing the trails called “Be Cool”. I have some posters if you want one for your office.

RIDE AND EVENT DISCLAIMER

These rides are not mine.  I am only sharing the data.  The Damion Alexander Team  cannot guarantee anybody’s safety.  There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should  pay attention and take reasonable precautions.  I always use a helmet.  I think that Helmets are required when riding.  If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in the right ear and keep the headset out of the left ear. Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud.  Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others.  Please also ride within your limitations. You are  not racing the Tour de France.  If you see someone  that is  not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention  Dothis for your and everybody’s safety.

Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws.  We are not lemmings.  Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow.  Use your head and enjoy your ride.

THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM, DAMION ALEXANDER, AND ANYONE ELSE WHO CONTRIBUTES TO THIS LIST SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY ACCIDENT OR INJURY THAT OCCURS ON THSES RIDES.  EVERY PERSON IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS AROUND THEM

This list is a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to put it together.  All I ask in return for the list is that you remember I’m A REALTOR.  If you have a relationship with another REALTOR, I love loyalty and respect those relationships.  However, if not, or if you need a second opinion, Please keep me in mind.  Many agents spend money advertising for new business, others sit open houses or cold call.  My business is based on referrals from past clients and friends.  The less time I have to do traditional prospecting the more I can do for the cycling community.  For example: this list.

THIS LIST IS PROVIDED AT A COURTESY OF THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM.  THIS LIST IS DEEMED RELIABLE, BUT NOT GUARANTEED.  WHEN POSSIBLE, CONTACT INFORMATION FOR THE GROUP RIDERS ARE PROVIDED.  TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND DOUBLE CHECK OR GO TO THE RIDE AND IF NO ONE IS THERE, GO RIDE BY YOURSELF.

Community Ride List Oct 28- Nov 3

One of my favorite events of the year is this Sunday. It is CYCLOVIA TUCSON. They have a new route, on the South side of town. What I love about this event is it introduces us to areas we might not otherwise explore. Personally, I’ll be taking The Loop down after the TMC Get Moving Tucson 5K and Half Marathon. In addition to this list I also have been known to take a few photos here and there of events around the Old Pueblo. With Halloween this coming week I expect to see lots of fun costumes and big SMILES.

I’m still raising funds for the beneficiaries of El Tour De Tucson. Like this list? If so, a donation to any of these charities will be greatly appreciated. http://bikepilgrim.com/?p=998

Did you miss the deadline for registering for el tour prior to the increased processing fee? Union Public House and Reforma, the official restaurants of El Tour Still have a discount code, but it ends on Halloween. On November 1, the processing fee increases again!  https://tinyurl.com/UnionPublicHouseElTourDiscount

As the weather hits the perfect cycling temperatures and all your friends decide they are moving here, please send them to The Damion Alexander Team for all your real estate needs. It is greatly appreciated and your support allows me to do this list and all the other cycling advocacy.

WHERE DO ALL THE RIDES COME FROM?  These links and shops and clubs and teams and facebook and YOU.  See a ride that is missing.  Please let me know  Damion@DamionAlexadner.com.  Thanks

Community Ride List Oct 21-27

Do you like competitions? I’m up against my kids to raise the most funds riding in El Tour De Tucson for Arts Express. Please be so kind to check out http://bikepilgrim.com/?p=998 and make a donation to Sam, Sophia or my campaign.

Did you miss the deadline for registering for el tour prior to the increased processing fee? Union Public House and Reforma, the official restaurants of El Tour have a discount code, but it won’t last. Save yourself $30, and then use it to grab something to eat. I can’t get enough of the pretzels, mason jars and Margaritas. Conveniently located across from my Long Realty office at River and Campbell. Let me know you are there and I’ll join you for a nibble and a drink. https://tinyurl.com/UnionPublicHouseElTourDiscount

Pachanga = Party! This weekend at Molino Basin, half way up Mt. Lemmon, is the TORCA Pachanga. Demo bikes, vendors, friends, beer, camping, cooler temperatures. If you are into Fat Tires, this is the place to be!

Damion

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

WHERE DO ALL THE RIDES COME FROM?  These links and shops and clubs and teams and facebook and YOU.  See a ride that is missing.  Please let me know  Damion@DamionAlexadner.com.  Thanks

Cycle 4 the Arts- Arts Express

The Alexander clan is raising funds for Arts Express by riding in El Tour De Tucson.   Please read the Bio’s below and donate to one, two or all three of us.

Or Click a name here to donate Now.       Sophia            Sam               Damion

The Cycle 4 the Arts El Tour Team supports the Arts Express arts education scholarship fund for at-risk, economically disadvantaged or special needs students. Research shows that arts education keeps kids in school, enhances academic scores and promotes self-esteem. Eighty-eight percent of the students attending the Arts Express arts education programs need financial assistance to participate. With your help, Arts Express provides access to the arts for over 2,500 students annually!

Sophia Alexander Hi! My name is Sophia Alexander, but I’m not only Sophia. I have also been a love struck librarian, a roller skating goddess, a young girl escaping nazi attack and a magical fairy. I have swum along side Ariel as her sidekick, I have offered wisdom as a goddess of love and have been a mathematical genius grieving the death of my father. I have lived all these lives and more, as I have been performing for as long as I can remember. There is no place where I am happier than when I am onstage, and there is nothing like the experience you get when looking out into full audience as you have the chance to be any person, any thing you want. I am blessed to have grown up in a family that has supported my every artistic adventure; driving me to rehearsals, letting me freak out when waiting for call back lists, running lines and attending every performance. Unfortunately, not everyone has the change to take a part in these experiences, and I truly wish that everyone had the same opportunities I have. Arts Express makes it possible for Tucson youth to get involved theatre and other fine arts. Please help me make it possible to allow others to experience theatre- so that they too can step out of reality into the magical, dramatic world of theatre.

Sam Alexander Hi! My name is Sam. Since I was young, fine arts have always been a large part of my life, from putting on small plays in my grandma‘s living room to performing piano on the stage of Carnegie Hall.As I’ve gotten older, and I have moved to pursue other aspects of the arts from creative photography to composition of music. In recent years, while I haven’t spent as much time on the stage, I still love to give back to the fine arts community, and arts express is the perfect way to do that.

Damion Alexander Hello. My Name is Damion. Having a famous artist as a mother, Lynn Rae Lowe, it would have been impossible for me not to be impacted by the Arts. She was the Art Teacher in Telluride Colorado, helped found the Telluride Council for the Arts and Humanities, was a key player in the local theatre troupe, a radio personality on KOTO, Director of Design and Events with the Telluride film Festival, sang with a ladies choir at Carnegie Hall and created ceramics, paintings, metal works and so many other visual masterpieces.  For most of my youth, I was in tow and found myself in many of the same productions. Drama, Art and Photography were always a part of my curriculum. While I enjoy every aspect of being creative, my passion is for photography. In the past year I have enjoyed the opportunity to capture Arts Express in action from Cats, Oklahoma, Let Freedom Sing, and the Ben Vereen Awards. What I appreciate the most is seeing the local, community based programs that is just like what I grew up with in small town America.

Perhaps my greatest creations are the two man-cubs who I am competing with. Even though this is a competition and I want to win, I say, donate to both Sam and Sophia. Either way, as the Dad, no matter who raises the most, I can say it all happened because of me😉

Ride List – 80+ plus rides and 50 events

I need your help. For El Tour De Tucson I am raising funds for multiple charities. Check out this link to donate http://bikepilgrim.com/?p=966

My intent is not only to raise much needed funds, but also to introduce Tucson to all of the incredible beneficiaries who benefit from El Tour De Tucson.

When you raise funds for a charity you receive a free entry into El Tour. As I’m riding for multiple charities and get one entry from each, I’ll be donating the entries to El Grupo Youth Cycling to give kids an opportunity to experience the largest ride we have here in the Old Pueblo.

As much as I’d appreciate a donation, I’d prefer you register to ride for one of the charities yourself.  A nice bonus for you is each charity has “goodies” they give back to those who ride and raise funds. Every beneficiary is different, but all include an entry into El Tour De Tucson and an event shirt. One charity, Uphill into the Wind, will even provide you with a bike to use in the event if you do not have one. Many have cycling jerseys or kits, some have professional coaches, and group rides.

I really appreciate it.

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

WHERE DO ALL THE RIDES COME FROM?  These links and shops and clubs and teams and facebook and YOU.  See a ride that is missing.  Please let me know  Damion@DamionAlexadner.com.  Thanks

Ride List September 30-October 6

There are more rides popping up each week as we get closer to El Tour.

One of the options to ride in El Tour is to sign up through one of the many charities.  If you raise funds you not only get an entry e to El Tour, but each charity has a little hook to make it a better experience for you. Some have jerseys, others offer coaching, and all give you the chance to do a little good. Last year through El Tour we raised 18 million dollars.

I’m in the process of riding for more than one charity this year. I’ll have more on that next week. Until then, keep the rubber side down.

Damion

Testing Bolle “The One” Helmet

I like bikes. Actually, it’s more of a love.  It does not matter to me if it’s an old cruiser, 26, 27.5, 29, 650b, 700c , skinny, fat or plus wheels, I like them all. I’m just happy when I’m pedaling.  Many of these fine iron horses are great when used for their intended use and with the correct gear. However, if you show up for the Saturday morning shop ride that averages 25 miles an hour on a single speed mountain bike, it’s just not going to work out very well for you.

It’s not only the bike that needs to be considered, but the gear as well. Since I love all bikes and am just as likely to be found riding in the desert through washes on a 29 plus as I am to be swinging a mallet playing bike polo or chasing after El Grupo Youth Cycling on the Shootout, I feel like I need the appropriate attire for each of these rides.  I often find that I have a limited bike budget, a lack of storage and a deep belief that I don’t need more stuff. With that in mind I’m always on the lookout for items I can use with all of my bikes.

One product that I use 100% of the time when I ride, but typically is somewhat specific to each discipline is a helmet. I’ve been on the lookout for one that can be used in every situation. My ideal helmet would first and foremost be comfortable. It does not matter how many gadgets they incorporate, if it does not feel good, I’ll never wear it. It is nice if it feels as light as a feather, but that’s less of a concern for me as if it just feels good. As I often Mountain bike, a visor is great, but it should be easily removable for road rides. Tucson gets a little warm in the summer, so ventilation really matters, but on winter mornings I often start rides before sunrise in the 30’s, so it needs to be able to accommodate a beanie underneath.  Since I ride in the dark, Integrated lights would be a nice touch. Finally, my wife is always concerned about me riding and asks me to wear a road Id, but I forget it, so I’d like to incorporate my vital info into the helmet. Finally, I still have other toys I “need” so it should be reasonably priced.

Is this really too much to ask from one product? I thought so, but apparently, Bolle thought this was a good wish list and made the “One Road Helmet”. Not only does it have every feature I mentioned but it also has a removable “Areo Shell” if you want to shave a few seconds off, a built in rear LED, Safety QR Code, summer and winter liners, removable visor, sunglass garage, and it only weights in at 280g/ 9.8 OZ.  The best part is it only cost $130.00 without the area panels and $170.00 with them.

Community Ride List… Now with even more upcoming events and races

I put in a few extra hours this week searching for races and events for the next year. Please let me know if I missed anything

I think Cycling season in Tucson is year round, but for many, it starts in the months leading up to El Tour De Tucson. It is apparent on the roads and the Loop that each weekend more people are pumping up the tires, lubing the chains and getting ready for the largest perimeter cycling event in the country. Next weekend is the official kick off for El Tour Season with the 2nd Annual El Tour Loop the Loop. The fun will on the 16th is from 6:30 – 10:30 a.m and has all sorts of fun and activities all around the Loop.  Don’t forget the after party (11 – 1) at St. Phillips Plaza, on the Loop at River and Campbell.

There are a few advocacy groups in Tucson that are really getting some solid work done for the Cycling Community. As far as Mountain Bikes go, Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists(SDMB), they have so many projects in the works I don’t have enough room to mention them all, but they include new trails from Vail to Oro Valley and all over the West side. I’ll do a separate blog on all of them on BikePilgrim.Com. All of this work can’t happen without funding. I recommend becoming a member of SDMB and buy some tickets for the Super Ultra Mega Raffle where you can win a pivot bike and other incredible prizes. Pick up a ticket at September 13th from 6-9 at Brushfire BBQ.

Damion

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

That time I recovered a Stolen Bike

I happy ending. If you follow me on Facebook or look at any of the things I share you can see that a lot of it is not happy news. For example, stolen bikes.

I really would prefer to be sharing happy news, photos of people smiling while riding their bikes, the ride list, reviews and recommendations about great new restaurants  or activities going on in the community. Honestly, it weights very heavily on me all the negative things that I share. However, while I feel like I’m the harbinger of bad news, and it beats me down, I feel the message is so important because if we all look out for each other our community can be so much better.

As I do share all the stolen bikes I am continually on the lookout for these bikes. I would even go so far as to say that it is been on my bucket list to find a friends stolen bike. However, my success rate is not that good. In the five plus years I know my efforts have only lead to two bikes being recovered, and that was not because I found them but because the people I shared it with did. So I basically feel I’m 0 for a few hundred.

I finally was able to recover a stolen bike myself. The joy that I feel from this is beyond description. Is the satisfaction you get when you’ve been working on something for years, have found it elusive, but then one day find success. I’d go as far as to say I’m giddy.

What made it better is the way that it happened. There were so many coincidences that it really felt like it was just what I was supposed to be doing.

Here’s the story.

It starts with a real estate referral a few days before of a cyclist who was relocating to Tucson. Only a few hours after the introduction via email, I was tagged in a post that his bike was stolen. Of course, I immediately shared it and thought to myself “this is going to make them really want to move to Tucson”.  As always, I took note of the bike in the special features, hoping that perhaps this would finally be the bike I would reunite with the owner.

The morning before I found the bike we were emailing back and forth. He was still not committed to any agent and had even seen a home with another agent.  We were planning on when we could meet to discuss his options.

I was on my way to a meeting to discuss planning for the Ride of Silence on May 17. As I was driving south on Campbell and approaching Glenn I had a last second urge to turn down Glenn. I had heard that my friend Andy Suter’s bike that was stolen a couple weeks ago, had been seen in this area. Since I heard that, I have routinely been going down the side streets looking for it as I’ve been going back-and-forth to appointments.

As I approached Tucson Boulevard I saw a guy riding a bike towards me that looked odd. I’m the last person to judge someone, as I have friends who live outdoors and friends worth hundreds of millions of dollars. I have friends of all color and all religion. That said, there are some things in life that just don’t look right. Since I am the photographer of the cycling community, perhaps I have a better idea than anyone of what looks normal on a bike. With hundreds of thousands of images of cyclist, I’ve taken pictures of almost every rider in Tucson at some point. What was it that made this guy look so out of place? It started with his pedal stroke, posture and a lack of fluidity, but the lack of a helmet and his clothing were not in line with the bike he was on. It also looked like the model of the bike that my new prospective client had reported stolen.

For me, this rider just did not look like he belonged on this whip.

Although I figured it was a long shot, I decided to pull a U-turn and go investigate.

I passed him and went down a few blocks and pulled off so I could take a video as he went bye. It definitely was not Andy’s bike, but it was another bike that I knew had recently been stolen. I had a photo of the other bike on my phone and was able to compare them and definitely, 100%, no questions at all, this was the stolen bike.

As my heart began to race I dialed 911.  The officer I spoke to asked me who’s bike it was and if they made a police report. I had the name of the owner, but the police were unable to locate a report and said to me that they could do nothing. This was incredibly frustrating. I understand they have protocol and that a stolen bike may not be there highest priority, but being told they could not investigate at all seemed harsh.  I continued to trail the “cyclist” from a distance, and thought of the next move. I did not have the number for the owner of the bike, but was aware that Andy Suter, whose bike I was looking for, knew him.

By this time we were near First ave and Grant so I thought of who was the closest person I knew who could help me. I called Andy Suter down an Epic rides. I think at first he was super excited because he thought I found his bike. As I was talking to Andy, the rider stopped in middle of the street, turned around and started riding back towards me. I figured it was time for action and I wasn’t going to get anyone else to help me.

The rider came right up to my car window and I said to him “you have a choice. I know whose bike this is. I know it is stolen. You can get off the bike and walk away and the cops are not going to have to be involved, or you can talk to the police who are on the way.”  He did not say anything, but look me straight in the eyes, and seemed to contemplate what I was saying. For 15 seconds he just looked at me. He then slowly stepped off the bike, gently laid it down next to my car, and walked away.

I watched until he was a fair distance away, and then got out, put the bike in the car. The entire time of this was happening I was still on the phone with Andy, but had forgotten he was there when I started to talk to the guy. When I returned to the car Andy was still on the line.  He was a little concerned as there have been no sound after I told the guy his options. Sorry Andy,  I didn’t mean to cause you any concern!!! As I was making a left turn onto Grant, a police car was going by and I waved him down. I gave him the vital information about what had happened. On one level, I did not care as I was just happy to retrieve the bike, but on the other side I want this guys information in some database so that he is recorded as a known bike thief.

I was able to get the phone number of the owner of the bike and gave him a ring. He was out at Starr Pass on his way for a run. I’m not sure if he was as excited as he was in disbelief. He said “it’s crazy man, Holy S^*t”. I had a busy day and it was not until late that day that he came and picked up his bike. I’m still not sure who was more stoked.

So now I can check off my bucket list, “recover stolen bike”. However, the feeling was so exceptional, I’ll be looking even closer from now on.

Final thought, because I know it’s going to come for people who read this. Yes! I recognize that I put myself in harms way and it could have ended in a different way. There are definitely people out there who are high on all sorts of different drugs, and other people who are only too happy to get into a fight. When I stopped to talk to him, my car was still in gear and I was ready to gun it if the need came up. I was waiting and watching his movements very closely. I would definitely not consider myself a bad ass. And actually go the other way and say I’m a pacifist. However, years of pent-up anger towards bike thieves definitely gave me the courage to make sure that this bike did not get away.
