Community Ride List… Now with even more upcoming events and races

I put in a few extra hours this week searching for races and events for the next year. Please let me know if I missed anything

I think Cycling season in Tucson is year round, but for many, it starts in the months leading up to El Tour De Tucson. It is apparent on the roads and the Loop that each weekend more people are pumping up the tires, lubing the chains and getting ready for the largest perimeter cycling event in the country. Next weekend is the official kick off for El Tour Season with the 2nd Annual El Tour Loop the Loop. The fun will on the 16th is from 6:30 – 10:30 a.m and has all sorts of fun and activities all around the Loop.  Don’t forget the after party (11 – 1) at St. Phillips Plaza, on the Loop at River and Campbell.

There are a few advocacy groups in Tucson that are really getting some solid work done for the Cycling Community. As far as Mountain Bikes go, Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists(SDMB), they have so many projects in the works I don’t have enough room to mention them all, but they include new trails from Vail to Oro Valley and all over the West side. I’ll do a separate blog on all of them on BikePilgrim.Com. All of this work can’t happen without funding. I recommend becoming a member of SDMB and buy some tickets for the Super Ultra Mega Raffle where you can win a pivot bike and other incredible prizes. Pick up a ticket at September 13th from 6-9 at Brushfire BBQ.

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

This list is a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to put it together.  All I ask in return for the list is that you remember I’m A REALTOR.  If you have a relationship with another REALTOR, I love loyalty and respect those relationships.  However, if not, or if you need a second opinion, Please keep me in mind.  Many agents spend money advertising for new business, others sit open houses or cold call.  My business is based on referrals from past clients and friends.  The less time I have to do traditional prospecting the more I can do for the cycling community.  For example: this list.

THIS LIST IS PROVIDED AT A COURTESY OF THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM.  THIS LIST IS DEEMED RELIABLE, BUT NOT GUARANTEED.  WHEN POSSIBLE, CONTACT INFORMATION FOR THE GROUP RIDERS ARE PROVIDED.  TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND DOUBLE CHECK OR GO TO THE RIDE AND IF NO ONE IS THERE, GO RIDE BY YOURSELF.

2017 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo

Every spring in the desert North of Tucson the best 24 hour mountain bike race is held. I could tell you about this wonderful extravaganza and the 4000 plus people who come to race, camp and support each other, but instead I’ll just share a few links to my photo albums.  On the weekend I shot over 6000 photos. I’m still in the process of sorting them, but here are a few albums to get a  feel for the festivities.

Click the links below to check out the images or follow The Damion Alexander Team on Faceebook to see more all of my photos,

A little bit of everything from the 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo. If you only want to look at one album, look here.

Community Ride list January 16-23, 2015

It’s that time of the year that we have rides almost every day of the week.  The race season is also starting to gear up.  I put in considerable time this week tracking down many of the races, both on the road and in the dirt.  The real challenge is going to be what race or ride to choose as so many are on the same day.

I hope to see you out on your bikes.  Make sure to smile, I’ll likely be taking your picture and posting them on The Damion Alexander Team on Facebook.

Ride on,

RIDE AND EVENT DISCLAIMER

These rides are not mine.  I am only sharing the data.  The Damion Alexander Team  cannot guarantee anybody’s safety.  There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should  pay attention and take reasonable precautions.  I always use a helmet.  I think that Helmets are required when riding.  If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in the right ear and keep the headset out of the left ear. Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud.  Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others.  Please also ride within your limitations. You are  not racing the Tour de France.  If you see someone  that is  not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention  Dothis for your and everybody’s safety.

Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws.  We are not lemmings.  Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow.  Use your head and enjoy your ride.

THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM, DAMION ALEXANDER, AND ANYONE ELSE WHO CONTRIBUTES TO THIS LIST SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY ACCIDENT OR INJURY THAT OCCURS ON THSES RIDES.  EVERY PERSON IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS AROUND THEM

WHERE DO ALL THE RIDES COME FROM?  These links and shops and clubs and teams and facebook and YOU.  See a ride that is missing.  Please let me know  Damion@DamionAlexadner.com.  Thanks

Community Ride list December 5-11

This past month I had the pleasure of demoing a Trek Stache 9.  I posted a review on the experience at http://bikepilgrim.com/?p=653.

Crossing the Rincon Savanna on the Arizona Trail. Photo by Matt Nelson

Crossing the Rincon Savanna on the Arizona Trail. Photo by Matt Nelson

Do you want to take a Trek Stache 9 or perhaps a Madone for a spin.  Trek has two demo days this weekend, Saturday December 5th from 9AM – 1:00 PM at Fantasy Island in Tucson and At Brown Canyon Trailhead in Sierra Vista on Sunday the 6th from 11:00 – 3PM.  They will have a great selection of road and mountain bikes to choose from.  Be sure to bring your pedals, helmet and hydration.  Personally, I recommend trying the Stache 9.

Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you on the road and in the dirt.

Ride on,

Damion

Thanks

Community Bike Ride List Oct 31-Nov 6

November 3rd is election day.  There are huge benefits for the cycling community if all 7 bonds pass.  As this list is all about bikes, I’d encourage you to vote for all 7.

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

PIMA COUNTY BOND ELECTION.  If the bond passes it will have a huge impact on the cycling community.  The projects that will benefit the cyclist include the Velodrome, 2 BMX parks, The Loop (and other non-mechanized trails), repaving roads, open space for MTB trails, and new trailheads.  The cost for the average home owner will be less than $18.00 a year.  Have questions.  Please call me, Damion, at 520-977-5664.  I’ve spent hundreds of hours working on this and have facts.  If you have a concern, I’m here to answer them or direct you to the sources that are available to help you make an informed decision.

Thanks

Community Bike Ride List October 23 -30

Thursday, October 29th is the last day to get your early ballots in the mail.  There is so much in the Bond election that will benefit the cycling community from roads, the velodrome, Loop Improvement and expansion, trailheads, and protecting open space.  I ask you to vote yes on all 7 propositions for the future of our community.  As for the cost… It will only be $17.54 per year for the average home owner.  This is a very good value and is an investment we need to make.

Damion

RIDE ON THE CAPITAL. January 19th 2016.

For years we have been attempting to pass legislation in Arizona for the safety of all cyclist. The time has come for all riders to unite and pay our elected officials a visit. The vision is for all bikes: Road, Mountain Bikes, Commuters, recumbent, Trikes, Unicycles and anything else you can pedal or ride to attend.

Bike shops and cycle supportive businesses from around the state will participate and have prizes for those who ride the farthest to get to the capital, those who bring the largest groups, and just random prizes for participating.

Thanks

TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND DOUBLE CHECK OR GO TO THE RIDE AND IF NO ONE IS THERE, GO RIDE BY YOURSELD.

Community Ride list for October 17-23, 2015

So many great rides, so little time.  It is the time of the year that many of the shop rides start to change start times, so make sure to double check before you head out.  On the plus side, this time of year they are later, so it may just mean you are early.

There is a great ride for Habitat For Humanity.on Saturday the 17th.  With four different routes, including a 10 mile recreational ride, 30 mile and 60 mile road rides, and a 30 mile mountain bike ride, this event provides an experience for everyone. Following your ride, join our construction volunteers and new homeowners to build and raise the walls for three new houses.  What a great opportunity to go for a ride and help make our community better.

Damion

Thanks

Community Bike Ride List Oct 10-16

Early voting started this week for the Pima County Bond Election.

Speaking from the “Bike” prospective, there are many reasons to vote yes on all 7 bond propositions.  I have gone through every item and broken down what is good for cycling. It has funding for  roads, the loop, bmx tracks, trailheads, new trails, open space and more.  If you want the detailed list please email Damion@damionalexander.com and say Bonds and Bikes in the subject.  No matter how you feel or vote, remember, our Democracy only serves those that show up on election day.

Damion

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

Thanks

TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND DOUBLE CHECK OR GO TO THE RIDE AND IF NO ONE IS THERE, GO RIDE BY YOURSELD.

Community Ride list Oct 3-9

This week I spent over 10 hours updating the ride list. I hope you like it.   I tracked down all the races across the State of Arizona as well as events that looked fun for those who love bicycles.

If you want to ensure you get this list, send an email with your name to damion@damionalexander.com and put Ride List in the subject.

On a very sad note, this week, ANOTHER cyclist was killed while riding his bike in Tucson.  Daniel Wilson (30) was hit by a car from behind on September 29th. He leaves behind 2 young daughters Libbie (6) and Clementine (4).

On January 19th 2016, I’ve started to organize a ride on the Arizona Capital.  We will be introducing legislation, AGAIN, for vulnerable users- those who legally use the road but are not in a motor vehicle.  For years we have been trying to raise awareness for every ones safety with common sense bills like a No texting and driving ban.  Arizona was the first state to introduce this bill, BUT one of only 3 states without it.  It’s time we speak up with a uniform voice on behalf of our community and make sure that the State enacts these protections for all of us.  If you want to get involved with this ride, email Damion@DamionAlexander.com and put Ride on the Capital in the subject.

If you would like to make a donation to Daniel’s family this link is below.

On October 05 a group representing you from CASA, SAMBA, SDMB, and TORCA will be meeting with the Marana Parks and Recs and other Admin to discuss the access to the trails in the Tortilita mountains.  Private property owners have requested that Bikes not use Cougar Canyon road and Como to access the trails.  Last week, I was very upset about this and the ride list had some bitter commentary towards the cycling community that resulted in the road being closed.  I do try to keep a level head as it is the best way to accomplish any task.  I apologize if I upset anyone.

The cost for the average home owner will be less than 18.00 a year.  Have questions.  Please call me, Damion, at 977-5664.  I’ve spent hundreds of hours working on this and have facts.  If you have a concern, I’m here to answer them.
RIDE ON THE CAPITAL. January 19th 2016.For years we have been attempting to pass legislation in Arizona for the safety of all cyclist.

TBC Circuit Race Part one.

Lets get this party started.  The early start.  There are nearly 2000 images to get through from the circuit race.  Today I need to prospect for new business for my real estate team.  However, I’d rather save the time and focus on the photos, for you.  So, send me a referral today and I can justify rocking through all the images.  Otherwise, I’m going to need to focus on my real job and leave the hobby for next week.

These photos are a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to take the photos and share them with you. All I ask in return for the photos is that you remember I’m A REALTOR. I’d like to nominate Jim Davis for Bike Commuter of the year.  Jim works for Tucson Fire Dept.  A few years back, the fire chief told all the firemen that they were going to need to put in some time of the work day into being physically fit.  I think this was directed at more of the desk jockeys/admin and others.  Jim took up cycling at that time.  What started as a mandate from work has turned into a full blown bike obsession.  Not only is Jim communing every day, but he is also racing his bike, and has become a known and welcomed face in that community.   I think that is what makes his story so special(even if it is common).  One discipline, like commuting, can lead to a bike obsessed life.  Last year Jim logged over 12,000 miles.

In addition to riding, Jim is one of the friendliest and outgoing people I’ve ever met while riding.  Every day I come across Jim on the Bike he has a huge smile, endless encouragement for everyone he sees, and my day is simply better.

I’d also like to mention that Jim is African American.  This is important as minorities are way under represented in the cycling community and we need to recognize those that are riding.  This will encourage others to get on their bikes and ride.

I go to a few hundred bike rides and events every year.  At all of these events, there is one person I see more than any other.  This is Alisa Payne Neave.  Many people might not notice her, but she is always doing something to help.  She is often the first there and the one of the last to leave.  She has been active in getting her own kids on bikes, riding with her husband, Arnold.  She rides on the road, she rides on the MTB.  She has helped with Look Save a Life, On the news for Silverbell Road about the cars driving in the bike lanes,  Camped out for the youth ride on the AZ Trail.

Community Bike Ride List September 26th-October 2nd

The bike ride this week is again a little abbreviated as I ended up spending 3 hours today working on a different bike related issue.  I was called by the developer of Saguaro Ranch about a conflict between some owners and mountain bikers on the Como Trail off of Moore Road.  This has been ongoing and I went to meet with the principals. My intent was to find some middle ground.

Some days it goes your way, and some days it does not. They are upset with the disrespectful riders who are cutting across their property. They are concerned someone will be injured on their property and sue them. As I listened to their grievances I felt sick to my stomach. If someone was on my property and told me to F^&K off, I think I’d be certain to shut off their access as well. They even went into a bike shop to talk about it and were told to get The F out of my shop and that the road was not Private. Today, our conversation was very civil, no yelling, no raised vices, just them expressing how they feel and Hank Rowe of SDMB, Vernie Aikins of TORCA and I listening. We tried to offer some compromises, but they were pretty clear on not wanting people using their private road any more. This is so hard for me to write. I do everything I can for the cycling community and hate coming out of a meeting without getting what I want for bikes.

As Todd Sadow says before every Epic Race, Don’t be THAT GUY. Unfortunately, some of us were THAT GUY and now the rest of have lost access. If you are riding in the Tortolitas use The Rancho Vistoso entrance.

So can this relationship be restored? I don’t think so, but we do have an option. Part of the agreement with Saguaro Ranch to the West, near Thornydale, is to build an access trail. They will do this as soon as two other developers agree to do their sections that lead up to Saguaro Ranch. Here’s the rub, those properties are not developed yet and it is going to need some serious political and community efforts to move this along. So, we can put one more item on my to do list. Be sure I’m looking for help on this project. Who is willing to help?
