Community Ride List Oct 21-27

Do you like competitions? I’m up against my kids to raise the most funds riding in El Tour De Tucson for Arts Express. Please be so kind to check out https://bikepilgrim.com/?p=998 and make a donation to Sam, Sophia or my campaign.

Did you miss the deadline for registering for el tour prior to the increased processing fee? Union Public House and Reforma, the official restaurants of El Tour have a discount code, but it won’t last. Save yourself $30, and then use it to grab something to eat. I can’t get enough of the pretzels, mason jars and Margaritas. Conveniently located across from my Long Realty office at River and Campbell. Let me know you are there and I’ll join you for a nibble and a drink. https://tinyurl.com/UnionPublicHouseElTourDiscount

Pachanga = Party! This weekend at Molino Basin, half way up Mt. Lemmon, is the TORCA Pachanga. Demo bikes, vendors, friends, beer, camping, cooler temperatures. If you are into Fat Tires, this is the place to be!

Damion

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

RIDE AND EVENT DISCLAIMER

These rides are not mine.  I am only sharing the data.  The Damion Alexander Team  cannot guarantee anybody’s safety.  There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should  pay attention and take reasonable precautions.  I always use a helmet.  I think that Helmets are required when riding.  If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in the right ear and keep the headset out of the left ear. Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud.  Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others.  Please also ride within your limitations. You are  not racing the Tour de France.  If you see someone  that is  not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention  Dothis for your and everybody’s safety.

Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws.  We are not lemmings.  Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow.  Use your head and enjoy your ride.

THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM, DAMION ALEXANDER, AND ANYONE ELSE WHO CONTRIBUTES TO THIS LIST SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY ACCIDENT OR INJURY THAT OCCURS ON THSES RIDES.  EVERY PERSON IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS AROUND THEM

WHERE DO ALL THE RIDES COME FROM?  These links and shops and clubs and teams and facebook and YOU.  See a ride that is missing.  Please let me know  Damion@DamionAlexadner.com.  Thanks

This list is a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to put it together.  All I ask in return for the list is that you remember I’m A REALTOR.  If you have a relationship with another REALTOR, I love loyalty and respect those relationships.  However, if not, or if you need a second opinion, Please keep me in mind.  Many agents spend money advertising for new business, others sit open houses or cold call.  My business is based on referrals from past clients and friends.  The less time I have to do traditional prospecting the more I can do for the cycling community.  For example: this list.

THIS LIST IS PROVIDED AT A COURTESY OF THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM.  THIS LIST IS DEEMED RELIABLE, BUT NOT GUARANTEED.  WHEN POSSIBLE, CONTACT INFORMATION FOR THE GROUP RIDERS ARE PROVIDED.  TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND DOUBLE CHECK OR GO TO THE RIDE AND IF NO ONE IS THERE, GO RIDE BY YOURSELF.

Community Ride List

The Ride list is below,

This coming Wednesday, there is a Summit on Distracted Driving in Phoenix. There will be a ride to the Capitol from Tempe as well as speakers, expo and lunch. This year there are 7 bills in the State House and Senate pertaining to distracted driving, BUT we are being told the Senator Bob Worsley (R-Mesa), Chair of the Transportation Committee, will not allow any to be heard. It does not make any logical sense why he is trying to kill these bills that are for the safety of everyone who uses the roads in Arizona.

Please take a few minutes and call his office to express your interest in having these bills heard. 602-926-5760.  Also, Senator Worsley is a supporter of http://www.arizonavoices.org where you can rate bills and comment.

A few more details on the event for those who care. WHO—Everyone who uses the roads in Arizona.  WHAT– A Bicycle Ride to The State Capitol where there will be speakers discussing all topics pertaining to distracted driving as well as over 30 vendors who will have educational booths.  All this Plus Free Lunch catered by Beyond Bread.  WHERE – Starting at Tempe Beach Park (80 W. Trail access to Honeybee Canyon

Honeybee Update:

While this message is being written as a result of access being restricted at Honeybee Trails, it is actually part of a much broader messaging that every Mountain Biker needs to hear and share.  Don’t be “That Guy”.

One of my volunteering positions is with the Bike Patrol at Sabino Canyon.   It is a privilege, not a right to ride our bikes in Sabino Canyon.  At any moment, if the rules are being broken, the District Ranger could restrict bike access.  When I encounter cyclist breaking the rules, my message is simple “Don’t be that guy”.  “That Guy” is the one who is going to ruin it for the rest of us.

What does this have to do with Honeybee Trails?  Everything!  The HOA owns the land were the WAPA easement exists and it is a privilege for us to use it.  They set up some rules and some in the community ignored them.  We have been “That Guy”.  The HOA feels they have given us adequate opportunity to change our behaviors and we did not.

This week I met with Kristy Diaz-Trahan, the Parks and Recreation Department Director at Oro Valley as well as the HOA president, Michael Douglas to discuss a plan for a new trail. Pima County is starting to work on access from the Loop up Big Wash and around the North side of Sun City Vistoso.  This is a plan that includes working with the State Land Trust, Oro Valley, Land acquisition from Vistoso Partners, Cultural mitigation (archeological), funding, and building of the trail.  The time frame to complete this may be as long as 3 years.  Because of all of you showing up at the Oro Valley Town Council meeting this trail is now a priority and your continual support may help us move that time frame up, but it leaves us without access as of October 1, 2016.

We asked the HOA to reconsider the closure until we can complete this plan, but the feeling I had from the meeting is that we have done nothing to deserve the access on the WAPA trail to remain open.  They asked for assurances that if they were to keep it open that the rules will be followed.  As we have done for the past few months, we offered to set up volunteers on the trail head and educate cyclist and to share with the cycling community the rules via SDMB, SAMBA, TORCA and The Damion Alexander Team.  The town of Oro Valley offered to have representatives from  OVPD to be stationed at the trail head.  We also asked them to tell us exactly what they would like to see from us to keep the trail open.

The Honeybee Ridge HOA board meeting was yesterday and Kristy Diaz-Trahan and a Lieutenant from The Oro Valley PD spoke to approximately 30 home owners from the community.  The 3 man HOA board decided that they are not changing their position and the access will be shut down.

So what do we do now?  1- Keep attending Oro Valley Town Council Meetings and letting all elected officials know how important a permanent access trail is.  2- Obey the posted rules.  3- Let others know they need to do the same.  4- Don’t make any plans to ride the trail after October 1, 2016 unless a compromise has been reached (I’m still hopeful). 5- Look at protecting the access based on prescriptive rights based on adverse possession.  6- You tell me.

As new information becomes available I’ll be sharing it on my blog www.bikepilgrim.com as well as on Facebook from The Damion Alexander Team.

Community ride list June 11-18

In the last ride list I was so excited about the low temperatures, but said “of course, it will likely jump into a record high the following week with temps in the 120’s just to bring us back to reality.”  Well, I was off by 8 degrees as we only hit 112.  It was the second earliest it has hit 110 in history.

I’m skipping past anything on global warming and heading for ideas of coping with the heat.

I have been putting in more miles now than at any point this year and have a secrets for dealing with the heat.  If you have a bathtub, fill it up and leave it full.  It will drop to room temperature.  A post ride dunk is the difference between being able to function the rest of the day or being a blob.  It refreshes both the mind and body.

Other tricks that work include starting your ride in the dark so you are done before 8AM, night rides, keeping hydrated, heading up Mt. Lemmon or to any state north of Arizona.

Ride on,

Damion

Honeybee Trail Head Parking and Access Issues

Bikes are so fun that more and more people are riding.  That is good.  Unfortunately, as our numbers grow, we are hitting up against some new challenges.  Trail access and parking is becoming an issue.  Last week the Estates at Honey Bee put this Sign up.

12705511_10153355725017019_6457142889726291702_n

Hank Rowe and I have met with the HOA board of directors and asked for them to allow us to redo these signs and omit the dawn to dusk provision, as well as say the rules are supported by the cycling community as well.  They are going to discuss it, and I’m optimistic they will accept our offer.  My concern is that most of us will respect these rules that are reasonable considering it is private property, but those who do not will be the belligerent ones and make the issue worse.

The second issue of concern is a parking lot that many have used to access the trails.  This sign went up a few days after the first sign.

As I have not had time to write this and Evan Pilling with SDMB hit most of what I would have said, I’ll share his comments on the subject below.  The only items I would add for alternative parking is that a Park and Ride exists about two miles away at 2291 E Rancho Vistoso, and the Pastor of the church across the street is looking at how he can make his lot available Monday-Saturday ( we have talked and he’s looking into insurance liabilities, but is himself a cyclist and supportive of the idea).

Evan Pilling Had this to say:  Honeybee Canyon/Tortolita Mountain Access Update:

As most mountain bikers in Tucson are already aware, there are a number of access issues going on right now at Honeybee Canyon in Oro Valley.  Representatives from the MTB community are in touch with the respective stakeholders to try to fund solutions.  Here is an update of the current situations.  Most of this information has already been posted, but we wanted to get everything in one place.

Parking Issues at 1171 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd (Fast Rhino/Cop Shop)

First off, the property management who runs the commonly used parking area at 1171 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd (sometimes called the “Cop Shop”) has, for the time being, prohibited non-customers from parking there 7 days a week.  This has always been a popular place to park for folks using the Honeybee trails and, and since the Como Rd. access was closed off it has seen a huge spike in use.  Numerous road cycling groups also use the lot to start and finish rides, sometimes having as many as 50 plus riders.  There have been issues with folks parking there for years, mainly due to some local residents who were hostile to bikes, but things came to a head recently with business owners citing overuse of the lot during business hours, public nudity due to riders changing before and after rides, a recent bike demo day that was not cleared with the owners, and some riders urinating and even defecating a the lot.

Until further notice, please do not park at the parking lot at 1171 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd.  You will likely be towed.  It is private property, and the owners are threatening to tow anyone who parks there for cycling purposes.  Representatives from the cycling community are in contact with the property management company and are working hard to find solutions to maintain access, and we will update via Facebook and the internet as things progress.  Please be respectful of the business owners at the Plaza; getting confrontational will not help us secure access.

If you want to ride at Honeybee, you still have some parking options.  First, you can park at the official Honeybee Canyon Trailhead (directions are here:https://www.orovalleyaz.gov/parksandrec/parks/honey-bee-canyon-park).  While there is limited parking here, there are also bathrooms and ramadas available for use.  Please do not stage large group rides here.  Second, you can park at Oro Valley Bikes at 12925 N Oracle Rd, 2.3 miles east of the Honeybee trails access point.  There is plenty of parking at Oro Valley Bikes.  It will add a few miles to your ride, but give you a nice warmup before getting on the dirt.  And finally, you can drive a few more miles up North to W. Edwin Rd, hang a left, and drive west to the Windmill.  Edwin is a dirt road, but passable for SUV’s and most cars.  Make sure to pick up an AZ State Land Dept. permit, as the Honeybee Trails and Edwin Rd. parking are on State Trust land.  Large group rides should plan on parking at Oro Valley Bikes or on Edwin Rd.

Access Issues at the Quiet Rain Dr. Access for Honeybee Trails

Another long-time problem area is the trail access via Quiet Rain Dr. off of Rancho Vistoso Blvd.  The Quiet Rain access point uses a utility easement between two subdivisions, and while it is technically an easement it is also private property.  In the past, there have been complaints about mountain bikers, conflicts with hikers and property owners, and even roofing nails found on the ground (presumably to damage tires and keep mountain bikers from using the trails).  Recently, the HOA who oversees the utility easement put up a sign limiting use from dawn to dusk (i.e. no night riding), prohibiting any organized races, and asking cyclists to be courteous.  While we are working with the HOA to find a solution, we ask that folks respect the HOA’s request to avoid night rides until things get sorted out.  Representatives from the cycling community met with the HOA on 3/16/16 to start the dialogue about preserving access through the utility subdivision, and we will provide updates as we get them.  If you want to night ride at Honeybee, please access the trails from W. Erwin Rd.

For both issues, representatives are also in touch with Oro Valley Parks and Rec, Oro Valley Police Department, and the Town of Oro Valley to find solutions and advocate for permanent trailhead access.  The sad reality is that, although we all ride and love the Honeybee trails, they are un-sanctioned trails on State Trust land and there is no guaranteed right to use them.

We appreciate your patience while we get things sorted out!”

So, there you have it.  Please be kind and respectful.  Don’t be “That Guy”

Damion AKA BikePilgrim

Be aware of your surroundings

I see a dangerous situation.  It has led to many collisions and it is only going to get worse.  It consumes a lot of my attention because I know these can be avoided, but it is going to need some people to change their behavior.

The issue is walkers, runners, skaters and cyclist who are so immersed in their music that they are oblivious to their surroundings.  I have had many close calls where I was only able to avoid a catastrophe  because I had all of my senses available.  I’m not going to preach and say not to listen when you are being active.  I’d be a hypocrite if I did.  I have an earbud in almost all the time and find that podcasts pass the time, I’m able to work and take calls, and music rocks my workouts.  However, if I have both earbuds in the volume is low enough that I can hear someone behind me.

Another great option is using only use one earbud.   Of course the downside to this is that the music does not sound the same losing one of the channels.  There are earphones from a local Tucson company designed to mix both channels of sound from a stereo audio device into a single ear — enabling the wearer to maintain alertness in any environment.

The owner of the Far End Gear, Kevin Goldstein, is offeringis offering a special holiday discount to the readers of BikePilgrim.com.  http://farendgear.com/xdu
Coupon Code for 25% off: BPSFELP25 Code valid through 12/24/2015.

You can also pick them up locally in Tucson at Bicycle Ranch Tucson (7090 N Oracle Road) and The Running Shop (3055 N Campbell Ave).

Community Ride List November 28- December 4

Happy Thanksgiving weekend.  I hope you had a chance to over indulge in both miles in the saddle and the seasons trappings.  I certainly have.  I am so Thankful  for the Cycling Community in Southern Arizona and each of you who give back.  I’d like to name people, but the list is so long, it would exceed the length of this list.

I know it was hard for me to pull the ride list together this week.  El Tour follow up, photos, work, family, turkey… I was even asked by a national blog to write an El Tour wrap up article.  It will be appearing in GranFondo.com sometime in the near future.  I put a copy of it with links on my blog

https://bikepilgrim.com/?p=632.

This is the most challenging week of the year for many cyclist. They just spent months preparing for El Tour and now that the goal has been achieved they put the bike up in the garage and don’t look at it until next fall.  Hopefully, this ride list will help you find some motivation to keep going.  Personally, I think the Tour de Cure on April 19th is an exceptional ride to train for.  Not only is it great motivation, but it also raises funds for the ADA.  For some types of diabetes, riding and being active can help manage it and may even delay or stop the onset in the first place.

Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you on the road and in the dirt.

Ride on,

Damion

TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND DOUBLE CHECK OR GO TO THE RIDE AND IF NO ONE IS THERE, GO RIDE BY YOURSELD.

Community Bike Ride List Oct 31-Nov 6

November 3rd is election day.  There are huge benefits for the cycling community if all 7 bonds pass.  As this list is all about bikes, I’d encourage you to vote for all 7.

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

PIMA COUNTY BOND ELECTION.  If the bond passes it will have a huge impact on the cycling community.  The projects that will benefit the cyclist include the Velodrome, 2 BMX parks, The Loop (and other non-mechanized trails), repaving roads, open space for MTB trails, and new trailheads.  The cost for the average home owner will be less than $18.00 a year.  Have questions.  Please call me, Damion, at 520-977-5664.  I’ve spent hundreds of hours working on this and have facts.  If you have a concern, I’m here to answer them or direct you to the sources that are available to help you make an informed decision.

Parts, Bikes, accessories, friends, the swap meet has it all.  It also has a new day.  Same as The Urban Assault.  My recommendation, sign up for the UAR as it will have a stop near the Bike Swap.  Stop, shop, enjoy, let the other guy win the UA, they beer will still be there when you finish at the bike swap.

RIDE ON THE CAPITAL. January 19th 2016.For years we have been attempting to pass legislation in Arizona for the safety of all cyclist. The time has come for all riders to unite and pay our elected officials a visit. The vision is for all bikes: Road, Mountain Bikes, Commuters, recumbent, Trikes, Unicycles and anything else you can pedal or ride to attend.

Bike shops and cycle supportive businesses from around the state will participate and have prizes for those who ride the farthest to get to the capital, those who bring the largest groups, and just random prizes for participating.

Community Bike Ride List October 23 -30

Thursday, October 29th is the last day to get your early ballots in the mail.  There is so much in the Bond election that will benefit the cycling community from roads, the velodrome, Loop Improvement and expansion, trailheads, and protecting open space.  I ask you to vote yes on all 7 propositions for the future of our community.  As for the cost… It will only be $17.54 per year for the average home owner.  This is a very good value and is an investment we need to make.

Damion

TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND DOUBLE CHECK OR GO TO THE RIDE AND IF NO ONE IS THERE, GO RIDE BY YOURSELD.

Community Ride list for October 17-23, 2015

So many great rides, so little time.  It is the time of the year that many of the shop rides start to change start times, so make sure to double check before you head out.  On the plus side, this time of year they are later, so it may just mean you are early.

There is a great ride for Habitat For Humanity.on Saturday the 17th.  With four different routes, including a 10 mile recreational ride, 30 mile and 60 mile road rides, and a 30 mile mountain bike ride, this event provides an experience for everyone. Following your ride, join our construction volunteers and new homeowners to build and raise the walls for three new houses.  What a great opportunity to go for a ride and help make our community better.

Damion

RIDE ON THE CAPITAL. January 19th 2016.

For years we have been attempting to pass legislation in Arizona for the safety of all cyclist.
