Early voting started this week for the Pima County Bond Election.

Speaking from the “Bike” prospective, there are many reasons to vote yes on all 7 bond propositions.  I have gone through every item and broken down what is good for cycling. It has funding for  roads, the loop, bmx tracks, trailheads, new trails, open space and more.  If you want the detailed list please email Damion@damionalexander.com and say Bonds and Bikes in the subject.  No matter how you feel or vote, remember, our Democracy only serves those that show up on election day.

This list is a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to put it together.  All I ask in return for the list is that you remember I’m A REALTOR.  If you have a relationship with another REALTOR, I love loyalty and respect those relationships.  However, if not, or if you need a second opinion, Please keep me in mind.  Many agents spend money advertising for new business, others sit open houses or cold call.  My business is based on referrals from past clients and friends.  The less time I have to do traditional prospecting the more I can do for the cycling community.  For example: this list.

For years we have been attempting to pass legislation in Arizona for the safety of all cyclist. The time has come for all riders to unite and pay our elected officials a visit. The vision is for all bikes: Road, Mountain Bikes, Commuters, recumbent, Trikes, Unicycles and anything else you can pedal or ride to attend.

Bike shops and cycle supportive businesses from around the state will participate and have prizes for those who ride the farthest to get to the capital, those who bring the largest groups, and just random prizes for participating.

These rides are not mine.  I am only sharing the data.  The Damion Alexander Team  cannot guarantee anybody’s safety.  There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should  pay attention and take reasonable precautions.  I always use a helmet.  I think that Helmets are required when riding.  If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in the right ear and keep the headset out of the left ear. Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud.  Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others.  Please also ride within your limitations. You are  not racing the Tour de France.  If you see someone  that is  not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention  Dothis for your and everybody’s safety.

Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws.  We are not lemmings.  Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow.  Use your head and enjoy your ride.

Have you heard the phrase “Foot in Pedal”?  It means that when a ride says it starts at 6AM, the ride leaves at 6AM.  If you are going to a group ride, you should expect that it is going to leave when it says.  I’m saying this as we are moving into the peak season and I’m seeing riders show up at “6AM” for a 6AM ride and are upset when the group leaves them behind.

The ride list is growing quickly as the temperature drops.  The GABA training rides start this week.  Many teams are starting to get base miles in for the race season.  The snow birds, many who lead weekly rides, are returning as well.  The Loop gets better every week.  The grand opening of The Canada Del Oro section connecting with the Santa Cruz will be next month-construction should be finished any day.  If you like to keep up on these developments I share more info on Facebook under “The Damion Alexander Team” and “The Loop”.

These rides are not mine.  I am only sharing the data.  The Damion Alexander Team  cannot guarantee anybody’s safety.  There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should  pay attention and take reasonable precautions.  I always use a helmet.  I think that Helmets are required when riding.  If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in the right ear and keep the headset out of the left ear. Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud.  Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others.  Please also ride within your limitations. You are  not racing the Tour de France.  If you see someone  that is  not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention  Dothis for your and everybody’s safety.

Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws.  We are not lemmings.  Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow.  Use your head and enjoy your ride.

If you only do to one bike event this week, I’m asking you to get political and attend the Pima County Supervisors meeting on Tuesday.  They will be making the final decision on if we will have a bond election this fall.  There are many projects that will benefit the cycling community and I am a HUGE yes vote for this Bond.  It is at 9:00 Am on Tuesday downtown.

TORCA  April Trail Work C.D.O. This is not an easy trail to get in and out for trail work so we will be doing an overnighter for this one. Plan will be to load up Saturday 4/18/15 into a few select 4×4 vehicles and drive to the base of CDO trail on the Charlou Gap rd. We will set up camp there and then hike in for some trail work. Dinner will be provided by TORCA that evening. Next morning TORCA will provide breakfast then its back in to do more trail work.

Happy Holidays.  This coming week we have lots of rides in Winterhaven.  I’m told the Tuesday Night Ride will have a Santa on Bike towing a Christmas Tree on a Bike Bob.  Bring a Bike Ornament and decorate the tree.

Sorry this is out so late tonight.  Today we had a meeting for with the County Bond Election Committee for the proposed Velodrome.  The good news is that pushed the vote back until January to give the Cycling community a chance to answer some questions on location and funding.  We will be back at the next bond meeting to try again.

Houghton Road: Irvington to Valencia construction update

Kenneth Lenger shared the following info from the city
We are installing the Florida T intersections, and as soon as these are in we are going to open the entire roadway for travel. I am sure everyone is eager to get to that point.
We are installing irrigation for the landscaping, and as soon as we are certain we are out of the frost season, you will see the landscaping going in….
In April we will put the rubberized asphalt in.
The project is expected to conclude on schedule in May 2014.
Houghton Road Corridor Art Rails
We finally have our corridor art rail colors determined. You are free to look these up online, as scanning, copying etc. electronically often alters the colors:

You can see the Great Lake color on the rails in the Houghton, Irvington to Valencia project, and in the near future, you will see the Deep Pool color rails going in at Broadway.
Thanks to one of our Corridor Planning artists, Nina Borgia-Aberle, for these selections.
Our artists are saying they plan to bring the public art “Cocoon” structure out in April. We are trying to encourage them to do it a bit sooner. We will keep you posted, but it appears they are looking to bring it in on a large flatbed truck and have a crane set it in place. I know everyone is interested in seeing how this will unfold.

Houghton Road: Irvington to Valencia construction update 1.07.14

Paving:… We just wrapped up placing the base paving on the north end of the project, and hope to have the top layer (before the rubber) completed by the end of the month. The first week in February we hope to have that traffic adjusted so we can add the Florida T intersections. We are discussing the temporary striping we want to use during this time, and until we can get the rubberized asphalt down in April (must be 60 degrees and rising for a long enough period of time in the day so we can use up a full plant batch of asphalt within the same day).
We also have the smaller paver on site so the east side path will start going in very soon.
Landscaping: We want to avoid planting anything if it might freeze, so we are holding off on plant installation until February, or when we are certain we won’t get a freeze. In the meantime we continue to install the irrigation lines and will perform testing on all of those.
Rip rap and rock mulch: You may have noticed that during last month’s rains, the site experienced some unexpected erosion in places. We are evaluating these areas and are planning to add rip rap and smaller rock mulch (2″ or 3″ and smaller rock) in various areas to make sure things will look good for a long time. We are glad the rains showed us where the existing soils were not going to hold up so we can get fixes done while we are still in construction.

This comment was added to my facebook post by Kenneth Lenger Additional info for east side cyclists:  Construction has completed the Houghton Rd northbound lanes from Valencia Rd to Irvington Rd.  This new pavement is about 45 feet wide, and as is noted in the construction update above, traffic will not be moved to the new pavement for a few weeks.  What this means is that, for now, cyclists have almost exclusive use of a 45 foot wide bike path along Houghton Rd, which can be used for northbound or southbound cycling.  One work of caution, as you cross the intersecting side streets, cars using those streets are not expecting any traffic on the closed off pavement, so be very careful crossing and yield to crossing vehicles. 

Update on two other unrelated construction projects: 

Rita Rd / Julian Wash:  New bike lanes are being added along Rita Rd between the UPRR tracks near Old Vail Rd and I-10 on both sides of the road.  For the last couple of months, the pavement along Rita Rd and the Julian Wash bike path has been torn up, making it difficult to connect from Rita Ranch to the bike path.  Within the last week, construction crews laid the base pavement lift connecting the bike path to Rita Rd, allowing uninterrupted cycling to the bike path.  Again, use caution as traffic can be congested due to lane closures.

Colossal Cave Rd between Pistol Hill and Vail:  Construction crews are installing new bike lanes along Colossal Cave Rd, temporarily causing a loss of cycling shoulder in that area.  The bike lane on the eastbound side (Vail towards Pistol Hill) has been completed from near the Pantano Wash to Pistol Hill, but the westbound side is still under construction.  If you are making a loop using Camino Loma Alta, Colossal Cave Rd, and Old Spanish Trail, I suggest making the loop in a counterclockwise direction to take advantage of the new bike lane along Colossal Cave Rd up to Pistol Hill.
