They waited until they found a location worthy of it\, and the White Mountains of Arizona certainly qualify. \nBased at scenic Wilderness Ranch outside Pinetop-Lakeside and Show Low\, the event sends riders onto the beautiful dirt and gravel roads of Northern Arizona. Choose from approximately 25\, 45\, or 80 miles\, making this a weekend that works for newer gravel riders as well as those looking for a serious day in the saddle. Gravel bikes and mountain bikes are both welcome. \nThis is also much more than showing up\, riding\, and driving home. Courses are well marked with fully supported aid stations\, while Wilderness Ranch becomes the weekend gathering place with camping\, live music at the pavilion\, and plenty of opportunities to hang out with other riders\, friends\, and family. \nBest of all\, you’re escaping the desert heat for a weekend of bikes\, dirt roads\, pine trees\, cool mountain air\, and some of the prettiest country in Arizona. \nA portion of the proceeds also stays in the White Mountains\, benefiting Re in Pinetop. \nGreat gravel. SUMMARY:Sonoran Shred XC
DESCRIPTION:The Arizona XC Championships come to Southern Arizona on Saturday\, September 26\, 2026\, with the Sonoran Shred at McKenzie Ranch Race Course in Vail. This purpose-built mountain bike venue sits within a 1\,700-acre Pima County natural open-space park\, with more than 99% of the property remaining natural desert. It was Southern Arizona’s first park built with a dedicated competitive mountain bike loop. \nMcKenzie Ranch is also a beautiful place to race. Sitting in the foothills of the southern Rincon Mountains\, the ranch lies in a transition zone between the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts\, creating a landscape a little different from what riders see closer to Tucson. The rolling grass-and-desert terrain includes mesquite\, acacia\, prickly pear\, cholla and stands of ocotillo that can put on a spectacular show when conditions bring them into bloom. Keep your eyes open beyond the racers\, too. This is wild desert country\, where birds\, rabbits and other desert wildlife are part of the surroundings. \nThe main XC race uses the Lozen Loop\, a smooth and fast 6.6-mile lap with approximately 494 feet of climbing. Rather than being dominated by highly technical rock features\, McKenzie Ranch is known for flowing singletrack\, rolling terrain\, gradual climbs\, fast descents and sweeping turns. The XCC short-track race uses a compact 2.1-mile combination of Lozen Link and Lozen Loop\, creating an even faster style of racing. \nThis is also a great race for spectators. Unlike many mountain bike races where riders disappear into the mountains for long stretches\, the compact\, looping nature of McKenzie Ranch gives spectators opportunities to see racers multiple times. Come out\, walk around\, find a good viewing spot\, cheer loudly and bring a cowbell. The short-track racing should be especially fun to watch\, with riders coming through frequently and positions changing quickly. \nWhether you’re racing for an Arizona championship or just coming out to watch\, the Sonoran Shred is a chance to experience competitive mountain biking in a venue built specifically for it\, surrounded by the open desert and mountain views that make riding in Southern Arizona special. \nxc \n

DESCRIPTION:The Chino Grinder is Arizona’s oldest and most iconic gravel grinder and has earned a reputation as one of the toughest gravel races in the West. With routes that are 75–95% unpaved\, this is real Arizona gravel riding: long\, remote stretches of dirt road\, big views and enough climbing and distance to make finishing an accomplishment. \nPart of what makes the Chino Grinder special is where it takes you. The course travels through the high-desert country surrounding Chino Valley and includes sections of historic roads that have been traveled for generations. Riders trade the classic Sonoran Desert landscape of Southern Arizona for wide-open grasslands\, juniper country\, distant mountains and big northern Arizona skies. Depending on where you are on the course\, keep an eye out for pronghorn\, mule deer\, coyotes\, jackrabbits and the many hawks and other birds that thrive in this open country. \nMultiple distances make the Chino Grinder much more than a race for hardcore gravel racers. There are options for different ages and abilities\, whether you’re taking on your first big gravel challenge\, attempting a century\, or lining up to see just how fast you can ride it. DESCRIPTION:BorderLands Gravel is much more than a gravel race. Set in the wide-open landscape of Douglas and Cochise County\, the event celebrates adventure\, cycling culture\, community\, and the unique character of Arizona’s borderlands. \nRiders can choose from 92\, 65\, or 39-mile gravel courses\, with an E-Bike division on the 39-mile route. Younger riders receive reduced registration fees\, and a special 65-mile collegiate category helps make the event accessible to the next generation of cyclists. \nOne of the most distinctive parts of the weekend is the free Bi-National International Parade Lap. Riders cross the international border into Agua Prieta\, Mexico\, ride through the community\, and return across the border to Douglas before the gravel races begin. But calling it a mountain bike race doesn’t quite explain it. \nIt’s really a party in the desert with a biking problem. \nEvery Presidents’ Day weekend\, thousands of mountain bikers\, friends\, families\, volunteers and assorted desert characters create a temporary city north of Tucson for one unforgettable weekend. \nYes\, there’s a 24-hour mountain bike race. Solo riders and teams take turns riding a fast and fun Sonoran Desert singletrack course continuously from noon Saturday until noon Sunday. But what happens between laps is every bit as much a part of the experience. \nThere are elaborate camps\, costumes that range from clever to completely ridiculous\, decorated bikes\, music\, campfires\, food\, an industry bike and gear expo and plenty of people who seem to have forgotten there is actually a race going on. \nThe exchange tent becomes the center of the universe as teammates wait for riders to finish their laps. During the day\, the desert can deliver perfect 70-degree February weather. After sunset\, lights begin winding across the desert as riders disappear into the darkness for another lap. Through it all\, 91.3 KXCI Community Radio provides the soundtrack for 24 straight hours. \nAnd then there are the costumes. At Old Pueblo\, Lycra is merely a suggestion. You may find yourself sharing the trail with superheroes\, animals\, tutus\, wigs and costumes that become increasingly difficult to explain as the night goes on. Taking the event seriously and not taking yourself too seriously coexist perfectly here. \nThat’s what makes 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo different. You can come to race for the podium\, challenge yourself to ride solo for 24 hours\, put together a team of friends\, volunteer\, camp or simply experience one of the great gatherings of the mountain bike community. \nThe bicycles may be the excuse\, but the people\, costumes\, music\, camping\, desert and community are what make Old Pueblo legendary. \nCome for the mountain biking. DESCRIPTION:The Tucson Bicycle Classic brings four days of road racing to four very different parts of the Tucson region\, combining serious competition with some of the roads and scenery that have made Southern Arizona a winter cycling destination. \nThe racing begins Thursday with the Marana Time Trial\, a fast 4.5-mile prologue on the Chuck Huckelberry Loop where every rider races Eddie Merckx style and the first leaders of the General Classification are determined. \nFriday brings the Sahuarita Road Race\, racing in the reverse direction of Tucson’s legendary Shootout route. The 20.5-mile circuit around the Helmet Peak area combines climbing\, rollers\, fast descents and wide-open desert roads where tactics and teamwork come into play. \nOn Saturday\, racing moves into the heart of Tucson for the Rio Nuevo Tucson Criterium. The 0.73-mile course alongside historic Barrio Viejo features tight corners and a 180-degree turnaround\, with cafés\, restaurants and breweries nearby. With racing throughout the day\, this may be the best stage for spectators who want to experience the speed and excitement of bike racing up close. \nThe weekend finishes Sunday with the Oro Valley Circuit Race\, a fast and tactical 2.8-mile course featuring rolling terrain and a punchy uphill finish on Musette Drive. Spectator areas and a finish-line beer garden make the finale as much fun to watch as it is difficult to race. \nFour days. Four communities. Four completely different courses. DESCRIPTION:Whiskey Off-Road\nApril 30 – May 2\, 2027 | Prescott\, Arizona \nStarting in the middle of Prescott’s historic and always lively Whiskey Row\, the Whiskey Off-Road quickly leaves downtown behind and heads into the mountains and spectacular scenery of the Prescott National Forest. \nAnd that’s where things get interesting. \nThe Whiskey combines some of the area’s best singletrack\, double track\, gravel roads\, serious climbing and just enough pavement to connect it all together. Riders can choose their challenge\, but whichever distance you pick\, you’re going to earn that finish. \nThe Whiskey boasts about a 94% finish rate\, which sounds reassuring until you see the course. \nThis is no walk in the park. \nWhat makes the Whiskey special\, though\, is everything surrounding the ride. For three days\, downtown Prescott becomes a mountain bike town\, with an industry expo\, live music\, events\, professional and amateur racing and thousands of people who share an enthusiasm for bicycles and being outside. \nWhiskey Isn’t Just for the Grown-Ups\nWith a name like the Whiskey Off-Road\, you might assume this is strictly a 21-and-over affair. Not even close. \nThe Whiskey is truly a family-friendly cycling weekend\, and one of my favorite parts of the entire event is the kids race. Before some of the biggest names in mountain biking take their turn\, the next generation gets to line up and race through downtown Prescott. \nKids show up on bikes of every size with parents\, grandparents and spectators lining the course and cheering like it’s the World Championships. Some of the kids are just happy to make it around the course. Others are tucked over their handlebars and racing like there are professional contracts waiting at the finish line. \nIt’s fun\, a little chaotic and one of the best reminders that the Whiskey is about much more than racing. It’s about introducing kids to cycling\, getting families outside and making everyone\, from the smallest rider to the fastest professional\, feel like they’re part of the same mountain bike community. \nSo yes\, there’s plenty of Whiskey in Prescott that weekend. But you definitely don’t have to be 21 to enjoy the Whiskey. \nIt’s also hard to imagine a better setting for the weekend. Prescott’s Wild West history isn’t something recreated for the event. Whiskey Row\, the Courthouse Plaza and the historic downtown are already there. Add several thousand mountain bikers and the result feels like the town and the event were made for each other. \nThen there’s the reward. \nFinishers roll back into downtown Prescott and receive one of the Whiskey’s best traditions: a commemorative pint glass emblazoned with the distance they just completed. From there\, the shaded lawn of the historic Courthouse Plaza is waiting. \nFind some grass. Take off your shoes. Fill the pint glass. Compare stories about the climb that seemed like it would never end and the piece of singletrack that made you forget all about it. \nThe Whiskey Off-Road is challenging enough to give you something to brag about\, but it’s also a three-day celebration of mountain biking\, Prescott and the people who make this sport such a great community. \nCome for the singletrack. Bring the kids. Earn the pint glass. Stay for the party on Whiskey Row.
