SUMMARY:The Shootout
DESCRIPTION:The Shootout \nThe shootout is the Saturday morning group ride. The ride has groups of about 20 riders in the summer and well over 100 riders in the winter and spring. The terrain is fast and rolling with two sprints and a gas station stop about halfway through. The total distance is just over 70 miles. If you’re looking for extra miles and some real climbing\, watch for the turnoff to Madera Canyon on Duval Mine Road. If you want to take in the same route at a slower pace\, catch the “scootout” or “old man shootout” leaving from the same starting location 15 minutes before the fast ride. \nThe Shootout is one of the best group bike rides in the country according to Bicycling Magazine. It is common to have pro cyclists showing up for this ride and it can be fast. \nCo-founded by Ralph Philips\, the owner of Fair Wheel Bikes\, and University of Arizona student Bob Cook\, an Olympic team member. It is one of the oldest and must do\, bucket list group rides in North America. \nRide times change according to the seasons.   I try an update them here\, but check out  Click Here for Fair Wheels for the latest info \nFair Wheel Bikes is home to some of the top group rides in the country. Fast rides are held every Tuesday and Saturday mornings. In the spring and fall\, both rides are regularly attended by some of the top professional riders from the US and around the world. Rides (times below) start on University of Arizona’s west side at; \nUniversity Avenue and Euclid Avenue. \n \nStart Times\n\n\n\nRIDE TIMES FOR SATURDAY\nShootout (A group)\nScootout / Old Man Shootout (B)\nOld-Old Man Shootout (C)\n\n\nStarting 2nd Saturday of November\n7:30 AM\n7:35 AM\n7:40 AM\n\n\nStarting 1st Saturday of March\n7:00 AM\n7:05 AM\n7:10 AM\n\n\nStarting 1st Saturday of April\n6:30 AM\n6:35 AM\n6:40 AM\n\n\nStarting 3rd Saturday of April\n6:00 AM\n6:05 AM\n6:10 AM\n\n\nStarting 1st Saturday of September\n6:30 AM\n6:35 AM\n6:40 AM\n\n\nStarting 2nd Tuesday of October\n7:00 AM\n7:05 AM\n7:10 AM\n\n\n*TMFR starts the same time as The Shootout (A Group)\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Bike Polo
DESCRIPTION:Bike Polo on The University of Arizona Mall between Cherry and Campbell. \nCycle polo\, bicycle polo\, or bike polo (polo-vélo in French; Radpolo in German) is a team sport similar to traditional polo\, except that iron horses  are used instead of horses. Great for improving bike handling skills. \nTypically\, there are extra mallets if you want to come out and play.  It is recommended to get a front wheel that is designed so a mallet wont get in the spokes.  Often the best material for this is political signs zip ties together. \nVery social group with a high chance of post ride beverages.

One of the most scenic rides if you are able to still look around as you hammer over Gates Pass and a super fast\, smooth\, winding road brings you back into Tucson \n\n\n\nRIDE TIMES FOR TMFR\n\n\n\n\n\nStarting 2nd Saturday of November\n7:30 AM\n\n\n\n\nStarting 1st Saturday of March\n7:00 AM\n\n\n\n\nStarting 1st Saturday of April\n6:30 AM\n\n\n\n\nStarting 3rd Saturday of April\n6:00 AM\n\n\n\n\nStarting 1st Saturday of September\n6:30 AM\n\n\n\n\nStarting 2nd Tuesday of October\n7:00 AM

SUMMARY:Beginner Overnighter to Colossal Cave State Park
DESCRIPTION:***If you would like to join this ride but it is cost prohibitive to do so or if you need to borrow gear to make it happen\, please let us know. \nWe’ll be leaving Campfire Cycling at around 9AM for a +/- 30 mile ride down the loop (Paved bike path) most of the way to Colossal Cave State Park We’ll be staying at a group campground with room for 20 tents. We will also be setting aside a middle meetup option for folks that don’t want to/can’t ride the full 30 miles. \nOn our Community Events/Rides we follow our Campfire Code of Conduct. We strive to create a positive and supportive environment where everyone feels welcome and heard. We don’t assume anyone’s abilities based on outwards appearance. We take responsibility for our actions and words. We respect the land\, it’s original stewards and leave no trace. \nIf this is your first bikepacking trip\, we are here to help. If you like advise on gear need or want any other advice we strongly recommend you stop by with your bike or pack up your bike for the trip and bring it by the shop so we can checkout your setup and make recommendations as needed. Feel free to setup an appointment or just stop on by. \nWhile this is a beginner oriented bikepacking trip\, everyone is welcome. I’m sure all of the newbies will appreciate having experienced campers along for the ride.  It’s a great opportunity to do a shake down run with new gear or a new to you setup as well as sharing experinece\, knowledge and setups. \nThis will be a no drop ride. We ride at a party pace with many stops and chances for regrouping as well as resupply. Campfire Cycling will also always have a mechanic at the back of the ride so no one is left behind in case trouble arises. There is also food available near the camp. \nPlease be prepared with all of your own camping gear\, food and water. This will be semi remote camping without many supplies nearby. Campgound has vault toilets and running water. There are businesses and a grocery store on the route with markets nearby the entrance/exit of the campground. \nProtect the Land we Ride on. For this trip we will have beautiful scenic views of the Santa Rita Mountains who’s unique environment is under threat to some heavy mining. Rosemont Canadian Company want to extract and export copper while dumping tons of wast into a mile wide hole that will seep lots of toxins into our groundwater. The Tohono O’odham Tribe as well as many conservation groups have been fighting this mine and for years. We recommend visiting: The Sky Islands Alliance\, The Calabasas Alliance\, Save the Scenic Santa Ritas. Donate\, show up to events and get involved!

SUMMARY:Ripsey Arizona Endurance Series
DESCRIPTION:When:\nMarch 9\, 2024\nThe A (61 miles) will start at 7:30am.\nThe B route (34 miles) will start at 9am.\nCamping is allowed at the Ripsey trail head – although there are no facilities \nWhere:\nYou will  start at the Ripsey trail head off of E Florence Kelvin Highway near Kelvin\, Arizona.  Google map directions to the trail head are here. \nWhat:\nThe Ripsey ride will be split into 2 different lengths so that you can choose how much AZT goodness you wish to experience. \nThe A loop (61 miles) will be a the best choice for those who have the endurance. This route will climb on dirt roads all the way to the Freeman Road water cache on the AZT. From there you get to blast down the roller coaster ride known as the Boulders segment. After some relatively rugged jeep roads and some not very well marked twistys through the desert you get to do the famous “Switchback Hill” up to the Ripsey ridgeline. Pause to take in the views before ripping along the ridgeline. Finally you drop down to the finish on an extended downhill section. \nThe B loop will start the same as the A\, with a lovely grind up Florence Kelvin Highway – to the very top of the world. From there you’ll take Tecolote Rd. and some dodgy singletrack over to the AZT. You will be momentarily sad that you missed the Boulders segment\, but soon enough will be dropping down into Ripsey Wash and facing Switchback Hill. Once you reach the Ripsey ridgeline and marvel at how fricking big Asarco Ray Mine is\, you’ll be heading toward that final epic downhill. \nWater:\nIn a race of this length and remoteness\, water is a concern. Bring as much as you can! We’ve done some scouting and found some possible water sources – non of which are 100% reliable. Water sources are marked (as waypoints) on the GPS files. \nFor the A loop the Freeman Road cache “usually” has water – but that is totally dependent on kind people restocking it. If you happen to be in that area (EVER) it is good Karma to bring a few gallons for the cache. \nBoth A and B loops go by “Bathtub Spring”. This has always had water when I’ve been through there\, but a recent report said it was dry. This is a cattle trough\, so you’ll want to filter any water you get from it. \nRoute:\nIt is HIGHLY recommended that you bring\, and know how to use\, a GPS for this race. There are some sections on the AZT where the trail is not terribly well marked. Using a GPS and paying attention are the best ways to stay on course and not get lost. GPS files for both courses can be obtained at the links below.\nRipsey_A_route(long)\nRipsey_B_route(short) \n \nA course (61 miles)\n\n\nB course (34 miles)\n\nPost ride:\nBring a chair\, beverages\, food\, whatever. Hang out and watch the folks doing the longer routes come in. Spend some time getting to know the super cool people who share this strange compulsion to push themselves to their limits. Witness the pain\, utter exhaustion\, and sense of accomplishment of anyone who finishes the A loop. \nSpecial bonus!\nOld Time Pizza in Kearney (520 363-5523) will deliver to the trail head. There is a $10 delivery fee\, so it is a good idea to do a bunch of orders at once. Bring cash. \n\nCLICK HERE FOR RESULTS\n

SUMMARY:Sedona Mountain Bike Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona Mountain Bike Festival is a three-day mountain bike celebration that includes a main Expo/Festival\, bike demos\, shuttled rides\, gear vendors\, a beer garden\, great bands\, food trucks\, skills clinics and a whole lotta sweet RED SINGLETRACK! \nWith over 90 vendors there are more demo bikes and more to do than any other bike demo out there. While the core of the event and the vibe will remain the same as previous years\, we do have some tricks up our sleeve for this year. Check back for exciting announcements as we get them. \nThe mountain biking in Sedona is world class. Sedona has over 250 miles of killer singletrack and is a media darling having appeared in magazines countless times in the last few years. Simply put: it’s a bucket list destination and this might just be the best way to come see for yourself. \nWhen is it? \nMarch 8th -10th\, 2024 \nTrail guidelines \nThe trail system within the Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest around Sedona\, AZ is one of the most special resources you’ll find anywhere. This is a trail system shared with hikers and equestrians\, and our goal with this festival is to celebrate it appropriately: respect the resource\, respect other trail users and generally leave a great impression of the mountain bike community which means NOT leaving our physical impression!! Everybody be smart\, stay on legal system trails and let’s show the world what the mountain bike vibe is all about!!! \nSee what others are saying \nBeta Mag: “Food trucks\, beer tents and a full line-up of mountain bike films put an exclamation point on the Saturday program at the Sedona Mountain Bike Festival” \nThe Radavist: “The mountain biking in Sedona is exceptional.
