SUMMARY:Willcox Flyer Bike Ride
DESCRIPTION:14th Annual Willcox Flyer Bike Ride\nSaturday\, September 5\, 2026 | Willcox\, Arizona\nRide Start: 7:00 AM | 8\, 33 & 66 Mile Routes \nCome ride the wide-open roads and high-desert landscape of southeastern Arizona at the 14th Annual Willcox Flyer Bike Ride. \nStarting in downtown Willcox\, the Flyer is a fun\, welcoming community ride with distances for everyone from families and casual cyclists to riders looking for a longer challenge. Choose from 8\, 33 or 66 miles\, with staggered starts beginning at 7:00 AM. \nThis isn’t a timed race. Ride fast\, ride easy\, bring some friends and enjoy a morning on the bike. Of course\, that doesn’t stop some of the faster riders from pretending they aren’t racing! \nThe Willcox Flyer is also a ride with a purpose. Every dollar raised benefits Small Town\, Big Dreams\, a local 501(c)(3) working toward an ambitious goal: making post-secondary education accessible to every student graduating from Willcox High School. The organization currently provides scholarships to 23 students\, many of whom are the first generation in their families to pursue education beyond high school. \nRide Day\nThe 66-mile riders depart at 7:00 AM\, followed a few minutes later by the 33-mile group and then the 8-mile riders. The short ride has traditionally been led by hometown Olympian and Willcox favorite Mike Allen\, now 90 years old. \nThe routes are on roads that remain open to traffic. Police escorts are provided\, traffic is generally light\, and riders should follow all rules of the road. Riders should also use caution at aid stations\, turnarounds and railroad crossings. \nFully stocked aid stations along the routes provide hydration\, fruit\, snacks and plenty of fuel to keep riders going. SAG support and bicycle mechanics are also available to help with mechanical problems or riders who need assistance getting back. \nAt the finish\, stick around for cold drinks\, chocolate milk\, watermelon\, snacks and some well-earned post-ride relaxation. \nPacket Pickup & Registration\nFriday | 4:00–7:00 PM\nKeeling Schaefer Vineyard Tasting Room\n154 N. Railroad Ave.\, Willcox \nSaturday | 6:00–6:45 AM\nRailroad Avenue Park\n100 S. Railroad Ave.\, Willcox \nDigital check-in is available using your QR code or name. Don’t forget to pick up your Willcox Flyer T-shirt and water bottle. \nParking\nStreet parking is available throughout the area\, along with a large dirt lot east of Railroad Avenue Park. Please pay attention to restricted areas and avoid blocking business gates or driveways. \nRider Support\nSAG wagons will be on the course throughout the ride for anyone who needs assistance. Sabino Cycles and Specialized will also provide mechanical support. \nRide for Something Bigger\nThe Willcox Flyer is possible because of its riders\, volunteers\, sponsors and the Willcox community. \nCome for the ride. Enjoy southeastern Arizona. Experience a great small-town cycling event. And know that your registration is helping a local student pursue a bigger dream. \nEvery rider matters. Every mile helps. And at the Willcox Flyer\, everyone is a winner.

SUMMARY:Bike Polo
DESCRIPTION:Bike Polo on The University of Arizona Mall between Cherry and Campbell. \nCycle polo\, bicycle polo\, or bike polo (polo-vélo in French; Radpolo in German) is a team sport similar to traditional polo\, except that iron horses  are used instead of horses. Great for improving bike handling skills. \nTypically\, there are extra mallets if you want to come out and play.  It is recommended to get a front wheel that is designed so a mallet wont get in the spokes.  Often the best material for this is political signs zip ties together. \nVery social group with a high chance of post ride beverages.

DESCRIPTION:For the first time\, the Arizona Track Championships are coming to the new Tucson Velodrome\, September 12–13\, 2026. This is a pretty big deal for Arizona cycling. After years of Arizona riders having to travel to California to compete for track state championships\, we finally have a velodrome of our own and a championship weekend right here in Tucson. \nThe two-day event will showcase just about everything that makes track racing so much fun to watch and race. Saturday is all about speed against the clock\, with the Flying 200\, 500m and 1km time trials\, individual pursuits from 2km to 4km\, and Team Time Trials. Sunday brings riders together for Scratch Races for men\, women\, masters and juniors\, followed by the Team Sprint. Categories range from juniors as young as nine through masters racers 75+\, giving generations of Arizona cyclists an opportunity to race on their home track. \nRacing starts at 7:00 a.m. both days\, with the track open for warm-up and rider check-in from 6:00–7:00 a.m. Arizona championship eligibility requires Arizona residency and a current annual USA Cycling license. Races are $15 each\, with online registration required. \nMore than another race weekend\, this feels like a milestone for cycling in Arizona. We finally have a velodrome\, and now we finally get to host our own state track championships at home. Even if you have never raced on a track\, this is a great weekend to come out\, cheer on Arizona’s riders and experience an entirely different kind of bicycle racing.

SUMMARY:The Pinewood Showdown
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE RACE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Pinewood Showdown is Zia Rides’ answer to the question riders had been asking for years: When are you going to put on a gravel event? They waited until they found a location worthy of it\, and the White Mountains of Arizona certainly qualify. \nBased at scenic Wilderness Ranch outside Pinetop-Lakeside and Show Low\, the event sends riders onto the beautiful dirt and gravel roads of Northern Arizona. Choose from approximately 25\, 45\, or 80 miles\, making this a weekend that works for newer gravel riders as well as those looking for a serious day in the saddle. Gravel bikes and mountain bikes are both welcome. \nThis is also much more than showing up\, riding\, and driving home. Courses are well marked with fully supported aid stations\, while Wilderness Ranch becomes the weekend gathering place with camping\, live music at the pavilion\, and plenty of opportunities to hang out with other riders\, friends\, and family. \nBest of all\, you’re escaping the desert heat for a weekend of bikes\, dirt roads\, pine trees\, cool mountain air\, and some of the prettiest country in Arizona. \nA portion of the proceeds also stays in the White Mountains\, benefiting Re in Pinetop. \nGreat gravel. Pine forests. Live music. Camping. Three distances. One very good excuse to spend a weekend riding bikes in Arizona’s White Mountains.

SUMMARY:The Shootout
DESCRIPTION:The Shootout \nThe shootout is the Saturday morning group ride. The ride has groups of about 20 riders in the summer and well over 100 riders in the winter and spring. The terrain is fast and rolling with two sprints and a gas station stop about halfway through. The total distance is just over 70 miles. If you’re looking for extra miles and some real climbing\, watch for the turnoff to Madera Canyon on Duval Mine Road. If you want to take in the same route at a slower pace\, catch the “scootout” or “old man shootout” leaving from the same starting location 15 minutes before the fast ride. \nThe Shootout is one of the best group bike rides in the country according to Bicycling Magazine. It is common to have pro cyclists showing up for this ride and it can be fast. \nCo-founded by Ralph Philips\, the owner of Fair Wheel Bikes\, and University of Arizona student Bob Cook\, an Olympic team member. It is one of the oldest and must do\, bucket list group rides in North America. \nRide times change according to the seasons.   I try an update them here\, but check out  Click Here for Fair Wheels for the latest info \nFair Wheel Bikes is home to some of the top group rides in the country. Fast rides are held every Tuesday and Saturday mornings. In the spring and fall\, both rides are regularly attended by some of the top professional riders from the US and around the world.
