Bike Polo

Wednesday nights mean bike polo at the University of Arizona Mall. Tucson’s bike polo scene combines bicycles, mallets, a ball and a little controlled chaos into one of the more unusual ways to spend an evening on two wheels.

Bike polo is essentially polo played on bicycles, with teams maneuvering around the court while trying to knock the ball into the opposing goal. It’s fast, surprisingly strategic and a lot of fun to watch, even if you’ve never seen a match before.

The setting on the University of Arizona Mall puts the action right in the middle of campus and makes it easy to stop by, watch for a while and meet people from another corner of Tucson’s cycling community. You don’t need to be a racer or even understand all the rules to enjoy it.

If you’ve ever ridden past and wondered what those people on bikes with mallets were doing, now you know. It’s Tucson Bike Polo, and Wednesday night is polo night.
