A Cyclists Moral Dilemma – Cycling and COVID

A cyclists moral dilemma – Yesterday Italy and Spain said cycling is banned. At first, I was outraged. How could they do this? But after considering the logic, I agree with altering the rides I am going to do.
The Cycling Today article comments that hot home for me came from Carlos Mascias, medical director of a private hospital in Madrid.   “Stay at home and put the bike aside,” “Whatever possibility to minimize the impact on the resources of medical services that is not directed toward coronavirus is primordial. If any cyclist suffers an incident and needs an ambulance or a bed in intensive care, we are taking it away from people who truly need it, who are now arriving en masse to hospitals,” he continued. “If something happens to you now, maybe you have a chance [to be treated], but you will be taking it away from someone else … but in 48 hours, if something happens to you, the one who is left without [ICU] might be you, those who are now riding your bikes.”

I think it is likely safer to ride today and in the weeks to come. People are staying in. Traffic is light. However, I also know that anytime I get on the road there is a chance of being hit. Normally, I’m OK with the risk, as I am only putting myself in harms way.
With the corona virus things are changing this prospective. If I, or you, end up being hospitalized because we are doing a “high” risk activity, we could end up taking up a bed at a hospital at a time the entire medial system is being overwhelmed are being overwhelmed. We need to look at whats happening from a completely different prospective. As I have so many people in this community I love, I’m thinking of them. I’m thinking of all the people on the front lines in the hospitals who are so incredible and making their job easier. I’m thinking of the possibility of health care workers having to make a ethical decision of who do you save if resources become limited. As I type this I feel like i’m an alarmist, pushing panic, but reading what happened in China and is still exploding in Europe, I feel like this is just common sense.

I was going to be pre-riding the El Tour de Tucson course this weekend, but am going to hold off for a few weeks. I will avoid group rides not only due to social distancing, but the additional risk ( even if small- I am going to do my part). I’m still weighting out if it’s still justifiable to be commuting on The Loop and rides where there is limited traffic. I still can see mountain biking, but will be staying on less technical riding and more cross county.

This is really, really hard for me to accept all this. Riding is a part of everything I do. It is what keeps me sane. I expect many who read this will think I’m over reacting. I might be, but this is a case where the good of the community out weights my need to ride.
Image may contain: possible text that says 'Respiratory Signature.'
In the case you don’t care about the risk because you are such a great rider and are never going to hit the pavement, I have another reason not to ride.  In the image above, you can see if you are riding in a group, you might be following someone who has COVID-19.  Just one more reason to be extra careful at this time.

The Joys of Riding in the Summer.

The Joys of Riding in the Summer.

When the temperatures climb into the 100’s many in Tucson abandon their bikes for the cooler confines of air condition.  Personally,  I find the summer offers some of the best riding.   Two of my regular rides start 5:20AM on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.  The sun is up, my gear is only a bib, jersey and 2 water  bottles.  I can go from my 2nd snooze button to my ride in under 5 minutes.  It definitely beats the winter regime of waking in pitch dark, charging riding lights, layers, more layers, full gloves, and those ever pesky frozen toes.

I Put together my top reasons why I love riding in the summer.

10- Snow Birds have flown north and the roads are less congested and feel safer.

9- No need for lights when you start at 5:00AM

8- All you need is a bib and jersey or shorts and a tee-shirt.

7- Prior to Monsoons there is little debris on the roads.

6- Night Riding is Perfect .  Among my favorite night rides are the Tuesday Night Ride, Full Moon Rides In Sabino Canyon and all Mountain Biking.

5- Vacations in Colorado.  Mountain passes over 12,000 feet, long and steep dirt descents, single track, gentle afternoon rains, “that mud stripe”, waterfalls,  river walk trails along rivers that flow.

4-  Everlasting dawn as a full Moon gently gives way to the rising sun on the only morning I’ve ever made it to the top of Stewart Observatory without being passed. (Granted, I did start at 3:30AM.)

3- Mt. Lemmon, especially after Windy Vista and definitely after Palisades.  Meeting the wife and kids on Mt. Lemmon for picnics.

2- The smell of creosote and the desert after a Monsoon, especially in Saguaro East.

1- Quality time to ride with the kids.

…. And one more reason from Jeff (please don’t use my last name)

“You can sweat off a hangover in under 20 minutes”.

This was Originally published in Tucson Pedaler when I was publishing that paper nearly a decade ago.  I just came across it and it seems fitting considering the temperatures this week.

Community Bike Rides May 12-18 2018

This coming Wednesday at 5:00PM is one of the most important rides of the year and I really hope you can make it. Please bring you friends, family, acquaintances, the guy you meet riding this weekend and your entire cycling team. It is the Ride of Silence. I get it, none of us want to think of the dangers posed by riding on the road. This ride forces us to confront that reality.  However, it is also an opportunity for us to show the rest of the community we have a right to ride on the streets and that they should be looking out for us.

If you have not heard, the Arizona State Legislators again failed to send a bill to the Governor that would ban texting while driving. Arizona is the only state that has not enacted a law. This Ride of Silence is also a message to the elected officials. The media will be there. If we have a HUGE turnout the visual is so much stronger in the news. So, PLEASE attend. It is only a five mile ride, but the impact may actually save your life of someone you know and care about.  There will be Pizza provided by Papa Johns after the ride.

Have you ever done a group ride, race or run in Southern Arizona?  If so, the chances are that I have a photo of you at the event. My son, Samuel, and I have created a page for all the images we capture. If you have not seen it, check it out https://thetucsonphotographer.smugmug.com/   The last event I posted was from the GABA Mt. Lemmon Hill climb. https://thetucsonphotographer.smugmug.com/Sports/Cycling/Large-Group-Rides-Not-races/GABA-Hill-Climb-2018/

Damion

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

This list is a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to put it together.  All I ask in return for the list is that you remember I’m A REALTOR.  If you have a relationship with another REALTOR, I love loyalty and respect those relationships.  However, if not, or if you need a second opinion, Please keep me in mind.  Many agents spend money advertising for new business, others sit open houses or cold call.  My business is based on referrals from past clients and friends.  The less time I have to do traditional prospecting the more I can do for the cycling community.  For example: this list.

THIS LIST IS PROVIDED AT A COURTESY OF THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM.  THIS LIST IS DEEMED RELIABLE, BUT NOT GUARANTEED.  WHEN POSSIBLE, CONTACT INFORMATION FOR THE GROUP RIDERS ARE PROVIDED.  TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND DOUBLE CHECK OR GO TO THE RIDE AND IF NO ONE IS THERE, GO RIDE BY YOURSELF.

Community Ride List November 11-18

This Thursday at the El Tour Expo, I’ll be sharing the latest plans for the Velodrome and bike park.  The presentation will be upstairs at 7PM in the same room they do the Platinum meetings.

This Sunday is the GABA Bike Swap. Just in time to pick up those last minute “Must Have” items for El Tour.

Sunday is the Mt Lemmon Marathon. If you follow me, you know I’m a HUGE supporter of getting out and being active. However, I’m a little frustrated that this event is the weekend before El Tour and will limit riding on the hill this Sunday.

This weekend is also the Vail 50/50. It is a 50K or 50 mile run on the Arizona Trail. I’m mentioning this so you don’t end up riding South of Colossal Cave Saturday morning or North of Colossal cave after noon. If you do, please be respectful of the runners, get off your bike, and let them pass. Courtesy is something I’m hearing we all need to work on. On that note, SDMB has a new campaign about sharing the trails called “Be Cool”. I have some posters if you want one for your office.

RIDE AND EVENT DISCLAIMER

These rides are not mine.  I am only sharing the data.  The Damion Alexander Team  cannot guarantee anybody’s safety.  There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should  pay attention and take reasonable precautions.  I always use a helmet.  I think that Helmets are required when riding.  If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in the right ear and keep the headset out of the left ear. Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud.  Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others.  Please also ride within your limitations. You are  not racing the Tour de France.  If you see someone  that is  not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention  Dothis for your and everybody’s safety.

Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws.  We are not lemmings.  Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow.  Use your head and enjoy your ride.

THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM, DAMION ALEXANDER, AND ANYONE ELSE WHO CONTRIBUTES TO THIS LIST SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY ACCIDENT OR INJURY THAT OCCURS ON THSES RIDES.  EVERY PERSON IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS AROUND THEM

WHERE DO ALL THE RIDES COME FROM?  These links and shops and clubs and teams and facebook and YOU.  See a ride that is missing.  Please let me know  Damion@DamionAlexadner.com.  Thanks

Community Ride List… Now with even more upcoming events and races

I put in a few extra hours this week searching for races and events for the next year. Please let me know if I missed anything

I think Cycling season in Tucson is year round, but for many, it starts in the months leading up to El Tour De Tucson. It is apparent on the roads and the Loop that each weekend more people are pumping up the tires, lubing the chains and getting ready for the largest perimeter cycling event in the country. Next weekend is the official kick off for El Tour Season with the 2nd Annual El Tour Loop the Loop. The fun will on the 16th is from 6:30 – 10:30 a.m and has all sorts of fun and activities all around the Loop.  Don’t forget the after party (11 – 1) at St. Phillips Plaza, on the Loop at River and Campbell.

There are a few advocacy groups in Tucson that are really getting some solid work done for the Cycling Community. As far as Mountain Bikes go, Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists(SDMB), they have so many projects in the works I don’t have enough room to mention them all, but they include new trails from Vail to Oro Valley and all over the West side. I’ll do a separate blog on all of them on BikePilgrim.Com. All of this work can’t happen without funding. I recommend becoming a member of SDMB and buy some tickets for the Super Ultra Mega Raffle where you can win a pivot bike and other incredible prizes. Pick up a ticket at September 13th from 6-9 at Brushfire BBQ.

Damion

Ride list and Thoughts on Whats Happening in Bike Advocacy

It’s been a busy week on the bike front.

The city of Tucson is holding public meetings about how to spend $200,000 in impact fees that are designated for Sentinel Peak “A Mountain”.  Your voice matters. Take the survey here. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2RBV6RF Personally, I said “trails”. In the additional comments I mentioned a trail from the Mercado to the top of “A” Mountain and to the South to access Starr Pass and Tucson Mountain Park. This could be so huge for tourism and a safe playground for local kids of all ages.

Last Tuesday the Pima County board of Supervisors voted on a hands free ordinance in Pima County as a primary offense. In the past 5 years I have been working with Brendan Lyons from the State to the local municipalities to try and get people behind the wheel to pay attention. While this is a project that is still in process, this was a giant accomplishment. It’s rather incredible knowing that these efforts will save lives. Now we need to get Tucson to accept it as a primary offence and  Marana, South Tucson, Sahuarita, Green Valley and the University of Arizona to adopt an identical ordinance so we have continuity in all of Southern Arizona. It gives me great satisfaction seeing Pima county do what is the right thing when the State is unwilling to step up.

As the Executive Director of the Arizona Bicycle Center I have had plans drawn for a Velodrome, BMX Park, Cyclocross, Mountain bike Park, Pump track, Jump Track, crit course that is close to Mountain Biking and the Loop. I’ve had the conceptual plans for a few months, but have been waiting on getting County, City, and most important, neighborhood buy in. I’m super excited to announce the support we need from the County and City is in place and next week I’m meeting the neighbors. I’m chomping at the bit to tell everyone where this grandiose project will be, and hope to do so in the next few weeks.

The WAPA easement, the access to Honeybee Trails was reopened 17 days ago for Rancho Vistoso Residents. There is a 20 day window to appeal the zoning interpretation that opened it.  If there were no appeals it would have stayed open. However, from what I have been told, the Honeybee HOA is going to appeal this. If they do, I’ve organized a group from the cycling community who will be challenging the zoning interruption as well.  What the appeal from the cycling community will state is that the trail should remain open for all residents of Oro Valley and their guests.

Finally, as a Parks and Rec commissioner for Pima County I’ve asked for an item to be on the agenda at the May 12th Meeting.  The agenda item says “Informational update on Advisory Committee regarding speed limits on the Loop”.  I see the number one challenge on the roads, trails, paths is people not playing nice. Hopefully, others will see the value in creating a committee to deal with how we can make all the trails and paths friendly for everyone.   The meeting is open to the public and is at 9:30AM (unfortunately the same time as the GABA Mt. Lemmon Hill Climb). The meeting is at 3500 W. River Road.

Ride on,

Damion

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

Ride List for April 15-21 2017

This weekend is one of my favorite events of the year. The El Grupo Scavenger Hunt is a super fun, challenging yet a family-friendly event. You bring your bike (and friends!). El Grupo will give you a map of the downtown area. On the back you will find 10 riddles to solve and 10 objects to find. You will race, ride or gallop (at your chosen pace!) within a 3 mile radius of downtown searching for the objects, tackling feats of strength and stupidity, and learning about obscure parts in downtown Tucson you never knew existed!  There is no better way of discovering the community than this ride. Enjoy coffee and treats from Beyond Bread while you get ready to rid as well as adult drinks from Catalina Brewing Company and lunch included in registration. There will also be a raffle with prizes from awesome local businesses! And there is a 100% chance that everyone’s favorite community photographer will be there to catch you in all the silliness.

April is BikeFest. Living Street Alliance has a calendar of events at https://www.bikefesttucson.com/events/2017-04/  Events range from skill classes, mechanic workshops, bike in movies, brewery rides and more.

Ride on,

In life, we go where we look

Attention: I’m entering dangerous water.  Political rant on guns (But with a bike twist as that is what I do).

Many of you saw the video I posted yesterday of me crashing after a small drop into the halfpipe at fantasy Island.  It was not a big jump, and it made me think of Napoloen Dynamite attempting a jump only to catch no air, hit a cinder block and rack himself.  However, that has nothing to do with my point on guns, just an aside.

Here is the video if you care to see it.  While there, Please like The Damion Alexander Team on Facebook.  My moment of grace, followed by…

For nearly a decade I have put in about 500 hours a year in the saddle.  I have been riding bikes since I was three.  I’ve been jumping off things that most people considered nuts from about that age.  At least half of that is on a MTB and even though I don’t have the best skills, I rarely crash.  I learned a long time ago that bikes have a tendency, like always, to go in the direction I look.  You don’t even need to try.  It just happens.  So, if you go off a jump and look at the boulder hiding in the grass and take your eyes off the landing, you tend to go towards the rock.  Oh, by the way, hidden in that grass is a boulder that I used very successfully to stop my momentum as I slid towards it.   I know that if I had turned my eyes back on the trail, I would not have gone down.  My arms were a little stiffer than they should have been, but the landing was smooth and if I had done what I know to do, what I have trained myself to do in those thousands of hours, to look where I wanted to go, I would have less bruises and scabs at the moment.  But I panicked.  In a moment of stress I did not respond as I trained.  Fortunately, the only one who was at risk of injury was me.

So what does this have to do with Guns?  I have seen many posts, articles, meme’s  about how someone is packing heat so that in the remote chances someone pulls a gun they are in a position to respond and not just be sheep ready for slaughter.  As much as this concept makes sense, very few people are actually trained to respond in these situations.  It is not just a matter of pulling out your gun and dropping the bad guy.  The chances are there are other people who you will hit.  Your mind is not going to function clearly and your aim is likely to be off.  Now I fully expect someone to comment that they know their skills and how they will respond.  They have been shooting their whole life.  They go to the firing range on a regular basis.  If there is a shooting, I hope that person is present.  They might make a difference, but based on my experience,  the chances are they  will freeze up, miss the target and potentially injure and kill someone other than the active shooter.  It’s just like what happened to me on the little jump.

I feel in the greater scope of the conversation on all things in life, not just bikes and guns, we do go in the direction we look and find what we are looking for. If we are focused on a violent solution to a dire situation, we will find it.  If we look at diplomatic options  we will find those as well.  I’m fairly certain I don’t want to live in a world where everyone feels a necessity to carry guns.  It’s hard to believe that anyone want’s that, but the course we are headed on makes it feel like the Soviet/US nuclear buildup of the cold war.  Back to the bike analogy, we are looking that boulder straight on, we are going at it fast, it’s going to hurt if we hit it, but we are still have control and the ability to look at other options.

Personally, I have no issues with gun ownership.  I do not want to see all guns abolished or the rights of the constitution limited.  I just recognize that arming everyone I not likely to solve the issue.

So ends my political rant.  Personally, I recommend selling all of your guns, buying Mountain Bikes, and going where the only shooters you might see are hunters.

Be aware of your surroundings

I see a dangerous situation.  It has led to many collisions and it is only going to get worse.  It consumes a lot of my attention because I know these can be avoided, but it is going to need some people to change their behavior.

The issue is walkers, runners, skaters and cyclist who are so immersed in their music that they are oblivious to their surroundings.  I have had many close calls where I was only able to avoid a catastrophe  because I had all of my senses available.  I’m not going to preach and say not to listen when you are being active.  I’d be a hypocrite if I did.  I have an earbud in almost all the time and find that podcasts pass the time, I’m able to work and take calls, and music rocks my workouts.  However, if I have both earbuds in the volume is low enough that I can hear someone behind me.

Another great option is using only use one earbud.   Of course the downside to this is that the music does not sound the same losing one of the channels.  There are earphones from a local Tucson company designed to mix both channels of sound from a stereo audio device into a single ear — enabling the wearer to maintain alertness in any environment.

Community Ride list December 5-11

This past month I had the pleasure of demoing a Trek Stache 9.  I posted a review on the experience at https://bikepilgrim.com/?p=653.

Do you want to take a Trek Stache 9 or perhaps a Madone for a spin.  Trek has two demo days this weekend, Saturday December 5th from 9AM – 1:00 PM at Fantasy Island in Tucson and At Brown Canyon Trailhead in Sierra Vista on Sunday the 6th from 11:00 – 3PM.  They will have a great selection of road and mountain bikes to choose from.  Be sure to bring your pedals, helmet and hydration.  Personally, I recommend trying the Stache 9.

Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you on the road and in the dirt.

Ride on,

Damion

This list is a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to put it together.  All I ask in return for the list is that you remember I’m A REALTOR.  If you have a relationship with another REALTOR, I love loyalty and respect those relationships.  However, if not, or if you need a second opinion, Please keep me in mind.  Many agents spend money advertising for new business, others sit open houses or cold call.  My business is based on referrals from past clients and friends.  The less time I have to do traditional prospecting the more I can do for the cycling community.  For example: this list.
