El Tour de Tucson is now preparing to host the 41st year for what we think is one of the premier bicycling events in the country. We hope you participate in this year’s event on November 23, 2024. You won’t be alone given that annually over 9,000 cyclists participate in the renowned and popular event.

Charity, community, health and wellness are what Perimeter Bicycling and El Tour are all about. They all go hand-in-hand when it comes to building awareness for a bike ride that has been part of the Tucson community for nearly four decades.

Did you know that El Tour de Tucson enables nonprofit, charitable agencies to raise funds for their respective organizations? Learn about their programs and sign up to ride on their teams here. Since 1983, Perimeter Bicycling events have raised over $115 million for local and international charitable organizations.

It’s that time of the year that the ride options start to increase. Many of the charities that El Tour benefit have training rides. This week, Tu Nidito has it’s first ride. It will leave from 3922 N. Mountain Ave at 6AM.

Have you heard about the 110 Acres Bike Park? There is a public open house at Yellow Brick Coffee, 3220 S. Dodge Blvd, August 18 at 9AM. Yellow Brick is not far from Aviation Bike Path and might be a good ride to coffee and learn about this incredible project.

Ladies – WTF (woman, trans, femme), Want to know how to fix your own bike or maybe just change a flat tire? Roadrunner Bicycles is offering bike stands, tools and Professional mechanic help from Deidra Bustos for FREE to anyone who identifies as a individual WTF (woman, trans, femme). Bring your bike or bike related questions to Roadrunner’s monthly Bike Mechanic skills night and get schooled on everything bike. This is a monthly event and the next one is August 26 from 5-7PM.

For the past decade, I’ve been capturing images of our community. Along the way, I have had the great fortune of meeting people dedicated to making our community better. While I was initially just fueled by serving the cycling world, I have also become deeply moved by a commitment to helping others. Tucson is a better place because of our volunteerism and our non-profits.

With that in mind, I have a two part challenge to FUNd Raising for ALL of the El Tour De Tucson Charities in 2018.

First, I am going to be riding and raising funds for EVERY beneficiary. Below, I’ll be adding links so you can help me in this endeavor. El Tour has been very generous to me by waiving their fees, so 100% of the money I raise will be going to the charities.

Second, I want to encourage everyone to ride for a charity. Many of them provide free entrance into El Tour, training rides, dinner before the ride, bikes, and lots of good times. In order to help you, I’ll be sharing videos of highlighting the works of each organization. My hope is that you can find something that speaks to your heart.

As much as I’d appreciate a donation, I’d prefer you register to ride for one of the charities yourself. A nice bonus for you is each charity has “goodies” they give back to those who ride and raise funds. One charity, Uphill into the Wind, will even provide you with a bike to use in the event if you do not have one. Many have cycling jerseys or kits, some have professional coaches, and group rides. Each one is different, but all include an entry into El Tour De Tucson and an event shirt.

My intent is not only to raise much needed funds, but also to introduce Tucson to all of the incredible beneficiaries who benefit from El Tour De Tucson. Below are links to my page and I’ll be adding videos and links about each charity.

When you raise funds for a charity you receive a free entry into El Tour. As I’m riding for multiple charities and get one entry from each charity , and I’ll be donating the entries to El Grupo Youth Cycling to give kids an opportunity to experience the largest ride we have here in the Old Pueblo.

As much as I’d appreciate a donation, I’d prefer you register to ride for one of the charities yourself. A nice bonus for you is each charity has “goodies” they give back to those who ride and raise funds. Every one is different, but all include an entry into El Tour De Tucson and an event shirt. One charity, Uphill into the Wind, will even provide you with a bike to use in the event if you do not have one. Many have cycling jerseys or kits, some have professional coaches, and group rides.

Talking about group training rides. If you are looking for people your speed to spin around with, I put out a ride list and am happy to add you to the mail list if you send an email to Damion@damionalexander.com . Please put “ride list” in the comments.

I will be adding additional charities and links on this page as I register for each as well as adding blogs on bikepilgrim.com with more details of what each of these charities do in the region. If you want to donate to one of the other charities I have not registered for yet, let me know and it will be the next one I sign up for.

This Thursday at the El Tour Expo, I’ll be sharing the latest plans for the Velodrome and bike park. The presentation will be upstairs at 7PM in the same room they do the Platinum meetings.

This Sunday is the GABA Bike Swap. Just in time to pick up those last minute “Must Have” items for El Tour.

Sunday is the Mt Lemmon Marathon. If you follow me, you know I’m a HUGE supporter of getting out and being active. However, I’m a little frustrated that this event is the weekend before El Tour and will limit riding on the hill this Sunday.

This weekend is also the Vail 50/50. It is a 50K or 50 mile run on the Arizona Trail. I’m mentioning this so you don’t end up riding South of Colossal Cave Saturday morning or North of Colossal cave after noon. If you do, please be respectful of the runners, get off your bike, and let them pass. Courtesy is something I’m hearing we all need to work on. On that note, SDMB has a new campaign about sharing the trails called “Be Cool”. I have some posters if you want one for your office.

I put in a few extra hours this week searching for races and events for the next year. Please let me know if I missed anything

I think Cycling season in Tucson is year round, but for many, it starts in the months leading up to El Tour De Tucson. It is apparent on the roads and the Loop that each weekend more people are pumping up the tires, lubing the chains and getting ready for the largest perimeter cycling event in the country. Next weekend is the official kick off for El Tour Season with the 2^nd Annual El Tour Loop the Loop. The fun will on the 16^th is from 6:30 – 10:30 a.m and has all sorts of fun and activities all around the Loop. Don’t forget the after party (11 – 1) at St. Phillips Plaza, on the Loop at River and Campbell.

There are a few advocacy groups in Tucson that are really getting some solid work done for the Cycling Community. As far as Mountain Bikes go, Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists(SDMB), they have so many projects in the works I don’t have enough room to mention them all, but they include new trails from Vail to Oro Valley and all over the West side. I’ll do a separate blog on all of them on BikePilgrim.Com. All of this work can’t happen without funding. I recommend becoming a member of SDMB and buy some tickets for the Super Ultra Mega Raffle where you can win a pivot bike and other incredible prizes. Pick up a ticket at September 13^th from 6-9 at Brushfire BBQ.

Today is #GivingTuesday. It is so much better in my opinion than Black Friday. It gives us a chance to look around, take stock of what matters to us and help others.

Personally, I get that times have been a little challenging for so many of us and that just paying the bills and fulfilling our own household obligations are sometimes hard enough and to think of investing in our community may not be at the top of the list.

However, please think of that passion you have, for whatever it may be, and look at how you can make that part of the community better.

This past week I matched funds up to $5,000 for the Arizona Trail at the Business Builder Bike Ride . Most everyone in attendance stepped up and donated $3,700. That made the total $7,400. I’ll extend my match to try and get to a total of $10,000 before the end of the month. If you make a donation, let me know, so I can add to my share.

Perhaps being outside and in Nature is not your passion, and that creating a community of acceptance, support, and understanding regarding children in grief will motivate you. If you are low on funds, there are many other another option. The Endurance Project needs donations for their Christmas Morning Giveaway. I know I’ve been feeling the chill in the air, can you imagine what it would be like sleeping outside tonight. There is a drop off box for donations in most bike shops around town as well as one in my Long Realty Office at 1890 E River Road.

Also, make a commitment to give some time this season. I had an ask from Health South for singers to come entertain the patients. The Salvation Army always needs bell ringers.

Next year, my goal is to raise $35,000 for the 35^th El Tour De Tucson and split the funds among the 60 plus beneficiaries. I’m very excited to meet with each of these charities throughout the year so I can learn how each provides a needed service in the community and to help my friends find where they can invest in Southern Arizona. This is the most important ride list of the year. Why? Because more people in Tucson train for El Tour De Tucson and after ride day, put the bike down for months and even years. With the holidays, parties, family, and all the stress that we shoulder this time of the year, it’s easy to hang up the bike.

So I’m challenging you to commit now to making cycling a year long commitment. If you are the type of person who needs to have an event to trail for, the list has races, multiple day tours and charitable rides. Perhaps start commuting to work once a week.

There is no joy that I have experienced in all I do for the cycling community than when someone comes up and says that I motivated them to get on the bike and they have lost weight, or are in control of their diabetes, and even that their intimate relationships are on the rise.

I look forward to hearing your success story. Now, Get on your bikes and ride.
