Ride list and Thoughts on Whats Happening in Bike Advocacy

It’s been a busy week on the bike front.

The city of Tucson is holding public meetings about how to spend $200,000 in impact fees that are designated for Sentinel Peak “A Mountain”.  Your voice matters. Take the survey here. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2RBV6RF Personally, I said “trails”. In the additional comments I mentioned a trail from the Mercado to the top of “A” Mountain and to the South to access Starr Pass and Tucson Mountain Park. This could be so huge for tourism and a safe playground for local kids of all ages.

Last Tuesday the Pima County board of Supervisors voted on a hands free ordinance in Pima County as a primary offense. In the past 5 years I have been working with Brendan Lyons from the State to the local municipalities to try and get people behind the wheel to pay attention. While this is a project that is still in process, this was a giant accomplishment. It’s rather incredible knowing that these efforts will save lives. Now we need to get Tucson to accept it as a primary offence and  Marana, South Tucson, Sahuarita, Green Valley and the University of Arizona to adopt an identical ordinance so we have continuity in all of Southern Arizona. It gives me great satisfaction seeing Pima county do what is the right thing when the State is unwilling to step up.

As the Executive Director of the Arizona Bicycle Center I have had plans drawn for a Velodrome, BMX Park, Cyclocross, Mountain bike Park, Pump track, Jump Track, crit course that is close to Mountain Biking and the Loop. I’ve had the conceptual plans for a few months, but have been waiting on getting County, City, and most important, neighborhood buy in. I’m super excited to announce the support we need from the County and City is in place and next week I’m meeting the neighbors. I’m chomping at the bit to tell everyone where this grandiose project will be, and hope to do so in the next few weeks.

The WAPA easement, the access to Honeybee Trails was reopened 17 days ago for Rancho Vistoso Residents. There is a 20 day window to appeal the zoning interpretation that opened it.  If there were no appeals it would have stayed open. However, from what I have been told, the Honeybee HOA is going to appeal this. If they do, I’ve organized a group from the cycling community who will be challenging the zoning interruption as well.  What the appeal from the cycling community will state is that the trail should remain open for all residents of Oro Valley and their guests.

Finally, as a Parks and Rec commissioner for Pima County I’ve asked for an item to be on the agenda at the May 12th Meeting.  The agenda item says “Informational update on Advisory Committee regarding speed limits on the Loop”.  I see the number one challenge on the roads, trails, paths is people not playing nice. Hopefully, others will see the value in creating a committee to deal with how we can make all the trails and paths friendly for everyone.   The meeting is open to the public and is at 9:30AM (unfortunately the same time as the GABA Mt. Lemmon Hill Climb). The meeting is at 3500 W. River Road.

This list is a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to put it together.  All I ask in return for the list is that you remember I’m A REALTOR.  If you have a relationship with another REALTOR, I love loyalty and respect those relationships.  However, if not, or if you need a second opinion, Please keep me in mind.  Many agents spend money advertising for new business, others sit open houses or cold call.  My business is based on referrals from past clients and friends.  The less time I have to do traditional prospecting the more I can do for the cycling community.  For example: this list.

Ride on,

Damion

Community Bike Ride List October 23 -30

Thursday, October 29th is the last day to get your early ballots in the mail.  There is so much in the Bond election that will benefit the cycling community from roads, the velodrome, Loop Improvement and expansion, trailheads, and protecting open space.  I ask you to vote yes on all 7 propositions for the future of our community.  As for the cost… It will only be $17.54 per year for the average home owner.  This is a very good value and is an investment we need to make.

PIMA COUNTY BOND ELECTION.  If the bond passes it will have a huge impact on the cycling community.  The projects that will benefit the cyclist include the Velodrome, 2 BMX parks, The Loop (and other non-mechanized trails), repaving roads, open space for MTB trails, and new trailheads.  The cost for the average home owner will be less than $18.00 a year.  Have questions.  Please call me, Damion, at 520-977-5664.  I’ve spent hundreds of hours working on this and have facts.  If you have a concern, I’m here to answer them or direct you to the sources that are available to help you make an informed decision.
RIDE ON THE CAPITAL. January 19th 2016.

For years we have been attempting to pass legislation in Arizona for the safety of all cyclist. The time has come for all riders to unite and pay our elected officials a visit. The vision is for all bikes: Road, Mountain Bikes, Commuters, recumbent, Trikes, Unicycles and anything else you can pedal or ride to attend.

Bike shops and cycle supportive businesses from around the state will participate and have prizes for those who ride the farthest to get to the capital, those who bring the largest groups, and just random prizes for participating.

RIDE AND EVENT DISCLAIMER

These rides are not mine.  I am only sharing the data.  The Damion Alexander Team  cannot guarantee anybody’s safety.  There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should  pay attention and take reasonable precautions.  I always use a helmet.  I think that Helmets are required when riding.  If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in the right ear and keep the headset out of the left ear. Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud.  Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others.  Please also ride within your limitations. You are  not racing the Tour de France.  If you see someone  that is  not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention  Dothis for your and everybody’s safety.

Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws.  We are not lemmings.  Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow.  Use your head and enjoy your ride.

THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM, DAMION ALEXANDER, AND ANYONE ELSE WHO CONTRIBUTES TO THIS LIST SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY ACCIDENT OR INJURY THAT OCCURS ON THSES RIDES.  EVERY PERSON IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS AROUND THEM

WHERE DO ALL THE RIDES COME FROM?  These links and shops and clubs and teams and facebook and YOU.  See a ride that is missing.  Please let me know  Damion@DamionAlexadner.com.  Thanks

THIS LIST IS PROVIDED AT A COURTESY OF THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM.  THIS LIST IS DEEMED RELIABLE, BUT NOT GUARANTEED.  WHEN POSSIBLE, CONTACT INFORMATION FOR THE GROUP RIDERS ARE PROVIDED.  TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND DOUBLE CHECK OR GO TO THE RIDE AND IF NO ONE IS THERE, GO RIDE BY YOURSELD.

Community Ride list for October 17-23, 2015

So many great rides, so little time.  It is the time of the year that many of the shop rides start to change start times, so make sure to double check before you head out.  On the plus side, this time of year they are later, so it may just mean you are early.

There is a great ride for Habitat For Humanity.on Saturday the 17th.  With four different routes, including a 10 mile recreational ride, 30 mile and 60 mile road rides, and a 30 mile mountain bike ride, this event provides an experience for everyone. Following your ride, join our construction volunteers and new homeowners to build and raise the walls for three new houses.  What a great opportunity to go for a ride and help make our community better.

Damion

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

Thanks

Community Bike Ride List Oct 10-16

Early voting started this week for the Pima County Bond Election.

Speaking from the “Bike” prospective, there are many reasons to vote yes on all 7 bond propositions.  I have gone through every item and broken down what is good for cycling. It has funding for  roads, the loop, bmx tracks, trailheads, new trails, open space and more.  If you want the detailed list please email Damion@damionalexander.com and say Bonds and Bikes in the subject.  No matter how you feel or vote, remember, our Democracy only serves those that show up on election day.

Damion

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

Thanks

Community Bike Ride List September 11-18

Have you heard the phrase “Foot in Pedal”?  It means that when a ride says it starts at 6AM, the ride leaves at 6AM.  If you are going to a group ride, you should expect that it is going to leave when it says.  I’m saying this as we are moving into the peak season and I’m seeing riders show up at “6AM” for a 6AM ride and are upset when the group leaves them behind.

The ride list is growing quickly as the temperature drops.  The GABA training rides start this week.  Many teams are starting to get base miles in for the race season.  The snow birds, many who lead weekly rides, are returning as well.  The Loop gets better every week.  The grand opening of The Canada Del Oro section connecting with the Santa Cruz will be next month-construction should be finished any day.  If you like to keep up on these developments I share more info on Facebook under “The Damion Alexander Team” and “The Loop”.

This list is a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to put it together.  All I ask in return for the list is that you remember I’m A REALTOR.  If you have a relationship with another REALTOR, I love loyalty and respect those relationships.  However, if not, or if you need a second opinion, please keep The Damion Alexander Team in mind.  Many agents spend money advertising for new business, some door knock and others cold call.  My business is based on referrals from past clients and friends.  The less time I have to do traditional prospecting the more I can do for the clients and friends you refer my team AND for the cycling community.  For example: This list.

I look forward to seeing you on your bike(s).

Thanks

Community Bike Ride List September 4-September 11

I admit, I’ve chewed off a few more projects that are time sensitive and just could not get the ride list completed.  As much as I wish I could get it all done, my priority is to my real estate clients first.   Both my business partner, Chris, and I are swamped. It’s nearly 9PM on Friday night on the holiday weekend and I have 20 hours of work to get done. It’s a good thing.  I have an incredible new listing going on the market tomorrow at the base of Mt. Lemmon and a few more coming on in the next few weeks.  I’ll have a more detailed list next week.  All of the sources I check are at the bottom of the page so you can look them up if you desire

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME THIS WEEK FOR THE REOCCURING RIDES.  I TRY AND GIVE CONTACT INFO SO YOU CAN CHECK ON THE RIDES.

Thanks

TBC Circuit Race Part one.

Lets get this party started.  The early start.  There are nearly 2000 images to get through from the circuit race.  Today I need to prospect for new business for my real estate team.  However, I’d rather save the time and focus on the photos, for you.  So, send me a referral today and I can justify rocking through all the images.  Otherwise, I’m going to need to focus on my real job and leave the hobby for next week.

These photos are a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to take the photos and share them with you. All I ask in return for the photos is that you remember I’m A REALTOR. For example: these photo albums. THANKS!!!

Government works for those that show up.

In the past few years as I have become more active as a Bike Advocate, I have seen when people get involved, Government listens.  If you want to see a change, you must become active personally to see it happen.  With this in mind, I’m working on a ride on the AZ State capital in January to meet with state legislators.  The overall message is Bikes Belong, and we will be asking them to create laws for cyclist and other vulnerable users safety.  The event will include bike rides from around Arizona to the State Capital.  The tentative date is January 19, 2016.  Are you in?

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME THIS WEEK FOR THE REOCCURING RIDES.  I TRY AND GIVE CONTACT INFO SO YOU CAN CHECK ON THE RIDES.

Weekly Bike Ride List for June 13-20

YOUR BIKE MISSES YOU!  You know who you are.  It’s so easy to fall into the pattern.  It starts with a flat tire, a big project at work, or after the last big ride you trained for and you have not been on the bicycle since.  It’s time, this week, to recommit.  Do it for the fitness, do it for the better looking body, do it for the mind, but most of all just do it because bikes are so fun to ride.  Below are rides for every level and every speed.

This week I’m recommending a few rides that will get you back in the saddle.  Both are lead by Tu Nidito as part of their El Tour De Tucson “Ride for a Child” program.  Both will have a free breakfast afterwards.  The fast ride should be about 50 miles and average pace will be 18 MPH plus.  The second is a no drop ride and everyone should free comfortable attending (even those who have been neglecting their trusty steads).  These rides are open to everyone; that means YOU!

6:30 AM Sunday 3922 N. Mountain Avenue https://www.facebook.com/events/433641326797164/

There is one event that I’m encouraging everyone to attend this week. On Monday, June 15, 4:00 PM at the River Park Inn, 777 W. Cushing St. is the kick-off press conference for the YES on Pima County Bonds campaign.  It’s important to show broad community support and your attendance there will be very helpful.  Why am I posting something political on this page?  Because if you ride a bike and live in Pima County, this Bond has so much that is going to impact and enhance your lifestyle, that you should support it.  Just to name a few of the 99 programs that will be good for cycling: The Arizona Bicycle Center Velodrome, 2 BMX parks, Finishing “the Loop”, and repaving roads….

Community Bike Ride List April 18-24, 2015

If you only do to one bike event this week, I’m asking you to get political and attend the Pima County Supervisors meeting on Tuesday.  They will be making the final decision on if we will have a bond election this fall.  There are many projects that will benefit the cycling community and I am a HUGE yes vote for this Bond.  It is at 9:00 Am on Tuesday downtown.

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME THIS WEEK FOR THE REOCCURING RIDES.  I TRY AND GIVE CONTACT INFO SO YOU CAN CHECK ON THE RIDES.

Thanks

Community Bike Ride List March 7-13, 2015

Last weekend was the Tucson Tour De Cure.  A ride to benefit the American Diabetes Association. If you are interested in seeing photos of cycling events around the state, The Damion Alexander Team posts a few hundred albums a year and over 15,000 images.  If you ride a bike, the chances are really good there are pictures of you.

Here is a link to just one of the four Tour De Cure Albums.

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155286002165154.1073742295.228735085153&type=1

Many agents spend money advertising for new business, some door knock and others  cold call.  My business is based on referrals from past clients and friends.  The less time I have to do traditional prospecting the more I can do for the clients and friends you refer my team AND for  the cycling community.  For example: This list.
