Happy New Year.  If your resolution was to ride more miles in 2017 this list of rides will help keep you on track.

If you know anyone who would like to receive the list, please feel free to send them my way.  Damion@DamionAlexander.com

I’ve been really busy working on the distracted driving summit at the State Capital in Phoenix on the 25th.  We need to have a GIGANTIC turn out so the state can see how important safety is.  There will be a ride from Tempe to the Capital that morning. Please share the event and do what you can to make it!

These rides are not mine.  I am only sharing the data.  The Damion Alexander Team  cannot guarantee anybody’s safety.  There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should  pay attention and take reasonable precautions.  I always use a helmet.  I think that Helmets are required when riding.  If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in the right ear and keep the headset out of the left ear. Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws.  We are not lemmings.  Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow.  Use your head and enjoy your ride.

This past month I had the pleasure of demoing a Trek Stache 9.  I posted a review on the experience at https://bikepilgrim.com/?p=653.

Do you want to take a Trek Stache 9 or perhaps a Madone for a spin.  Trek has two demo days this weekend, Saturday December 5th from 9AM – 1:00 PM at Fantasy Island in Tucson and At Brown Canyon Trailhead in Sierra Vista on Sunday the 6th from 11:00 – 3PM.  They will have a great selection of road and mountain bikes to choose from.  Be sure to bring your pedals, helmet and hydration.  Personally, I recommend trying the Stache 9.

For years we have been attempting to pass legislation in Arizona for the safety of all cyclist. The time has come for all riders to unite and pay our elected officials a visit. The vision is for all bikes: Road, Mountain Bikes, Commuters, recumbent, Trikes, Unicycles and anything else you can pedal or ride to attend.

So many great rides, so little time.  It is the time of the year that many of the shop rides start to change start times, so make sure to double check before you head out.  On the plus side, this time of year they are later, so it may just mean you are early.

There is a great ride for Habitat For Humanity.on Saturday the 17th.  With four different routes, including a 10 mile recreational ride, 30 mile and 60 mile road rides, and a 30 mile mountain bike ride, this event provides an experience for everyone. Following your ride, join our construction volunteers and new homeowners to build and raise the walls for three new houses.  What a great opportunity to go for a ride and help make our community better.

This list is a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to put it together.  All I ask in return for the list is that you remember I’m A REALTOR.  If you have a relationship with another REALTOR, I love loyalty and respect those relationships.  However, if not, or if you need a second opinion, Please keep me in mind.  Many agents spend money advertising for new business, others sit open houses or cold call.  My business is based on referrals from past clients and friends.  The less time I have to do traditional prospecting the more I can do for the cycling community.  For example: this list.

For years we have been attempting to pass legislation in Arizona for the safety of all cyclist. The time has come for all riders to unite and pay our elected officials a visit. Early voting started this week for the Pima County Bond Election.

Speaking from the “Bike” prospective, there are many reasons to vote yes on all 7 bond propositions.  I have gone through every item and broken down what is good for cycling. It has funding for  roads, the loop, bmx tracks, trailheads, new trails, open space and more.  If you want the detailed list please email Damion@damionalexander.com and say Bonds and Bikes in the subject.  No matter how you feel or vote, remember, our Democracy only serves those that show up on election day.

This list is a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to put it together.  All I ask in return for the list is that you remember I’m A REALTOR.  If you have a relationship with another REALTOR, I love loyalty and respect those relationships.  However, if not, or if you need a second opinion, Please keep me in mind.  Many agents spend money advertising for new business, others sit open houses or cold call.  My business is based on referrals from past clients and friends.  The less time I have to do traditional prospecting the more I can do for the cycling community.  For example: this list.

These rides are not mine.  I am only sharing the data.  The Damion Alexander Team  cannot guarantee anybody’s safety.  There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should  pay attention and take reasonable precautions.  I always use a helmet.  I think that Helmets are required when riding.  If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in the right ear and keep the headset out of the left ear. Have you heard the phrase “Foot in Pedal”?  It means that when a ride says it starts at 6AM, the ride leaves at 6AM.  If you are going to a group ride, you should expect that it is going to leave when it says.  I’m saying this as we are moving into the peak season and I’m seeing riders show up at “6AM” for a 6AM ride and are upset when the group leaves them behind.

The ride list is growing quickly as the temperature drops.  The GABA training rides start this week.  Many teams are starting to get base miles in for the race season.  The snow birds, many who lead weekly rides, are returning as well.  The Loop gets better every week.  The grand opening of The Canada Del Oro section connecting with the Santa Cruz will be next month-construction should be finished any day.  If you like to keep up on these developments I share more info on Facebook under “The Damion Alexander Team” and “The Loop”.

These rides are not mine.  I am only sharing the data.  The Damion Alexander Team  cannot guarantee anybody’s safety.  There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should  pay attention and take reasonable precautions.  I always use a helmet.  I think that Helmets are required when riding.  If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in the right ear and keep the headset out of the left ear. Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud.  Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others.  Please also ride within your limitations. You are  not racing the Tour de France.  If you see someone  that is  not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention  Dothis for your and everybody’s safety.

Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws.  We are not lemmings.  Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow.  Use your head and enjoy your ride.

The man, delaying me on the drive home.

I was heading home from El Grupo practice this weekend and saw the red and blue lights in the rear view mirror. I was somewhat surprised to see them as I was traveling under the speed limit on an empty road.  The offence, obscured license plate by bikes and bike rack.

Clearly, with two bikes on the rack it was impossible to make out the plate.  I deserved a ticket based on the law. Fortunately, I was only given a written warning.  However, it has made me look at my rack and realize there is no way I can use it and drive “legally”.  I own three bike racks and all of them are illegal.

I talked to David Tang, The owner of Ordinary Bike Shop to see if he sells a rear mounted rack that will not block a license plate.  David said “This has been an issue with rear mount racks for decades, there are none that allow the plate to be clearly visible when loaded with bikes.  The license plate can be moved to a visible location with an aftermarket product”.  He went on to say “a few racks allow plates to be seen, but some vehicles have weird plate locations, but those are the exceptions”.

I contacted Ryan Roher with the  Pima County Sheriff Dept. for a comment and he directed me to look at ARS 28-2354B3.   In a nutshell it says  “A person shall display the license plate or plates as follows… so it is clearly legible … In a position to be clearly visible.”

In searching the web for examples of how to deal with this issue I found a solution from Barb Berle.  “I now have a lighted license plate holder securely attached to my hitch rack in a position that is highly visible while traveling with bicycles. Since the State of Arizona will not issue a second license plate of the same number, all I have to do is remove my plate from the car and place it in the bike rack holder – easy and secure.”  Good idea,  if you leave the rack on 24/7 or are OK to remove and reattach your license plate every time you remove your rack.  I expect the chances are better of be cited for no plate when you forget the plate on the rack.

There is one positive side to obscuring the plate.  If you have the photo cameras snap a photo of you, they can not ticket you.  I’m not saying this has happened to me(more then once), but perhaps it is part of the equation in weighting if you want to risk driving with obscured plates.

On a side note, I am meeting with Arizona House of Rep Ethan Orr this week to discuss possible laws that will benefit the cycling community.  Perhaps a solution to this exists.  Do you have any ideas?
