Cyclovia Fall 2016

Friends, friends and more friends. That is what I like the most about Cyclovia. I have discovered one huge problem with this event. 10-3 is not long enough. There were hundreds of friends that I could spend 5 hours with each catching up, and to have all the activities on top of that!!! I’d like to propose Cyclovia Week;-)

Cyclovia showcases how awesome car free roads can be and how much support this movement has. Thanks Living Streets Alliance for all the work you do to make Cyclovia happen.

It was very cool having one end of Cyclovia end at an area attraction like the Botanical gardens. I average 2-3 trips to the gardens per year, but heard many people who attended who had never been there. It is one of the magnificent facets of this event. Learning about your community.

All 420 of the images in one album(see below). You can even buy one if you desire.  Why buy when you can get most of these for free on facebook or snatch it from the Smugmug account?  All the money from this site goes into new camera equipment so I can continue to share images of the community.  If you like what I’m doing, please support the camera fund.  If you wan’t to just grab an image, I’m ok with that, but you officially owe me a real estate referral.

 What is a Cyclovia?

(Copied from the Cyclovia Tucson Website)

Cyc˙lo˙via (/ˌsklɵˈv.ə/) n.
A Spanish word signifying the temporary closure of a network of streets to cars so that they become “open” to  people. During Cyclovia anyone can bike, walk, skate and participate in fun, free activities.

One of the first and largest cyclovias in the world is held in Bogotá, Colombia.  Every Sunday and holiday, every week of the year, the city closes down over 70 miles of roadways to cars to invite people to bike, walk, talk, exercise, picnic, sunbathe, etc. in the streets.  People from all backgrounds come together in this beautiful community-inspiring event.

Cyclovia in Tucson

Why have a Cyclovia in Tucson? Because Tucson has a lot of streets and it’s not everyday that you can be in them car-free and care-free.  Take your whole family out for this great opportunity to explore and experience Tucson’s roads without the presence of cars.

Cyclovia gives people from the greater Tucson region the chance to enjoy great weather, see neighbors, friends and people from throughout the area, and get a little exercise – all on city streets that will be closed to car traffic and open to walkers, joggers, cyclists, skaters and all other forms of people-powered movement.

Motor vehicles are detoured from the route allowing everyone the freedom to enjoy “open streets” safely and comfortably.  Cyclovia isn’t a race, parade or competition.  Instead, it’s a chance to enjoy Tucson from a new perspective (outside of the car).  Walk your dog, roller skate, blow bubbles.  Have fun because during Cyclovia, the streets are yours.

The next Cyclovia Tucson is Sunday, April 2, 2017 from 10-3.

This list is a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to put it together.  All I ask in return for the list is that you remember I’m A REALTOR.  If you have a relationship with another REALTOR, I love loyalty and respect those relationships.  However, if not, or if you need a second opinion, Please keep me in mind.  Many agents spend money advertising for new business, others sit open houses or cold call.  My business is based on referrals from past clients and friends.  The less time I have to do traditional prospecting the more I can do for the cycling community.  For example: this list.

I did not get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

THIS LIST IS PROVIDED AT A COURTESY OF THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM.  THIS LIST IS DEEMED RELIABLE, BUT NOT GUARANTEED.  WHEN POSSIBLE, CONTACT INFORMATION FOR THE GROUP RIDERS ARE PROVIDED.  TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND DOUBLE CHECK OR GO TO THE RIDE AND IF NO ONE IS THERE, GO RIDE BY YOURSELF.

Ride List for the Week of September 17-24

Have you felt it?  That slight chill in the air on the morning rides.  It’s a sign that most ride times will be changing.  The necessity to wake up at 4:30 in the AM is long gone and soon we will all be able to claim a full night of sleep.

This weekend is the Oracle Gravel Grinder.  I’m excited to be sponsoring this new race and will be out taking pictures this weekend.

Bad news alert.  I and so many others in the community gave it the Ole’ College try and then some, but the HOA has voted to shut down the access on October 1 to Honeybee Trail.  Want more info.  Check out my blog. https://bikepilgrim.com/?p=824 .

I’ve been playing more with videos and am trying to make one for every ride on the list so you can get a feel for it and if it’s a ride you want to do.  Here is one from the Tuesday Night Social Ride last week. I’m posting them on you tube under Bike Pilgrim.  Please subscribe to the page.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=693n-PnOF6E

On Thursday Night at the Hilton El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort the town of Oro Valley is holding a Community Conversation On DISTRACTED DRIVING.  For all of us, please show up.

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

RIDE AND EVENT DISCLAIMER

These rides are not mine.  I am only sharing the data.  The Damion Alexander Team  cannot guarantee anybody’s safety.  There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should  pay attention and take reasonable precautions.  I always use a helmet.  I think that Helmets are required when riding.  If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in the right ear and keep the headset out of the left ear. Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud.  Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others.  Please also ride within your limitations. You are  not racing the Tour de France.  If you see someone  that is  not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention  Dothis for your and everybody’s safety.

Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws.  We are not lemmings.  Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow.  Use your head and enjoy your ride.

THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM, DAMION ALEXANDER, AND ANYONE ELSE WHO CONTRIBUTES TO THIS LIST SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY ACCIDENT OR INJURY THAT OCCURS ON THSES RIDES.  EVERY PERSON IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS AROUND THEM

WHERE DO ALL THE RIDES COME FROM?  These links and shops and clubs and teams and facebook and YOU.  See a ride that is missing.  Please let me know  Damion@DamionAlexadner.com.  Thanks

THIS LIST IS PROVIDED AT A COURTESY OF THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM.  THIS LIST IS DEEMED RELIABLE, BUT NOT GUARANTEED.  WHEN POSSIBLE, CONTACT INFORMATION FOR THE GROUP RIDERS ARE PROVIDED.  TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND DOUBLE CHECK OR GO TO THE RIDE AND IF NO ONE IS THERE, GO RIDE BY YOURSELF.

ride list

The bike ride list is below, Sorry it’s a day late.  Life got in the way of life again.

An update on Honeybee Canyon Trail Access.

First and foremost, YOU ROCK!!!! The community showed up in a big way last night at the Oro Valley Council Meeting. I was told it was the most people ever to attend a town council meeting. Whatever happens, we have at the very least shown Oro Valley how important Cycling is to the community. Again, THANKS!!!!

At the very end of the Town Council meeting, there was a “Future Agenda” discussion. Council setup an Executive Session (closed door) on Sept 23 and requested legal opinions and options relative to the access issue.

I’m very pleased with a conversation I had with the HOA president after the TC meeting that has resulted in an appointment being set with the HOA , myself and Parks and Rec Manager from Oro Valley.

In my dream world, the outcome will be that the HOA deeds the land to the Town of Oro Valley and it remains open for trail access until a time that Oro Valley can create a new trail head with parking, restrooms and a permanent trail to access the State Trust land.

I’m sure another opportunity will come up soon where we will all need to show up. I’ll share it on The Damion Alexander Team facebook page page, so please like it if you have not.

I recommend becoming a member of Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists and or TORCA-Tucson Offroad Cyclists & Activists. While I was the point and organizer on this last meeting, both of these organizations are advocating for Mountain Bikers, trail use, and trail maintenance every day. Last night we saw the power of what we can accomplish when we work together.

The Damion Alexander Team Cycling Jersey

When I open my bike closet I find that I have amassed a collection of jerseys from the decade since I fell back in love with cycling.  I have kits from Primal, Voler, Hincapie, Capo, Black Bottom, Nalini, Pearl Izumi, Squadra, and Pactimo.  They range from team kits for El Grupo and Team Cirrus, charity kits like The Look, Save a Life, American Diabetes Association and Ride for A Child with Tu Nidito, artistic and fun jerseys from GoLoco, event kits from bike races and festivals I have been a part of and those that I have been fortunate to win from New Belgium Brewery.

With all of these options I find I typically use the same kits over and over while many just sit there as reminders of happy days.  When picking what I’ll wear comfort is always at the top of the list.  Functionality also ranks high.  Some of my favorite jerseys have such small pockets that in the summer they’re not good on any ride where I need a third bottle in my back pocket.  Likewise, some bib and short chamois are good for a quick spin, but after 2 hours they are like a Florida Swamp in July.  Being that clothing is considered a direct reflection of who we are the company or organization they represent as well as their sponsors also need to be considered.  I wear some names with pride knowing what the organization represents and have other kits featuring logo soup of businesses that I have little respect for and won’t wear.

One thing that has been on my mind for years is the process that goes into the making of a kit.  As a business owner who wears spandex 5-6 days a week it is clear that investing in a moving billboard that doubles as clothing is a worthwhile investment.  Also, I’m always looking for gifts for my clients and as many ride bikes, a jersey or kit seem like the ideal gift.   With that in mind I’ve been looking into the process of designing a kit.  As I mentioned I own kits from over a half dozen companies and know whose kits are the most comfortable.  There is also that pesky factor in life called cost.

I’m not sure where this path is going to lead, but hopefully before it is over it will help others know the process of making their own kit.  I expect this should take a few months with 6-8 blog entries.  The main points I know I will look into are the design process.  Picking a local designer or working with the manufacturer directly.  Sponsors and Logo soup to cover some of the costs (or keep it clean).  The design process.  What materials and only Kits, or skinsuits, arm/leg warmers, gloves.  How many to order, who can order, how to order.  Finally, photos of smiling riders wearing The Damion Alexander Team colors.

TMC Meet Me Downtown 5k Night Run and Festival of Miles

The TMC Meet Me downtown 5k Night Run and Walk and the Festival of miles was run in Tucson on Memorial day weekend.

Featuring nine separate divisions of one-mile events, the inaugural Festival of Miles has been named a “Featured Event” in the acclaimed “Bring Back the Mile” series, founded by Ryan Lamppa. Showcasing America’s best Mile events, the Bring Back the Mile series aims to create a national movement highlighting the Mile distance.

I had the pleasure of being the lead out (on bike of course) for all 9 races on Friday as well as the 5k on Saturday Night. . I took my Trek Stache and was having to really push the bike to stay ahead of the last race. The winner finished in 4:11.  The 5K pace was easier and I opted to use my road bike.

It was tricky getting some of the images.  You would think that since I usually shoot cyclist, who go much faster, this would be easy.  However, I’m still trying to dial in the running shots.  I was not there as the photographer and if you really want to see some great shots check out the Goatographer and Oro Valley Photography.

Below are the links to the photos I shot over the two days.

BICAS Art Auction

Of all the annual events in the biking community, this one is at the top of my list.  Now only does it showcase some of our most talented artists creating bike related art, it also brings out the most vibrant characters.

This was the first year at the Art Gallery.  I still love the Depot for the charm and character, but from a practical point of view this location was great.  There was plenty of parking, room for the food trucks, the building has many rooms with a free flowing floor plan and plenty of wall space to showcase the art.

This fundraiser sustains BICAS throughout the year so that they can continue to provide affordable and free bicycle education and services to the Tucson community.

I apologize to all the artist. No artist tags were posted on the wall when I popped in to take the pictures of all your great art. Many noted and talented artist give to BICAS. We can all reward them by supporting them as Artists, not just at the auction, but year round.

I created two photo albums on The Damion Alexander Team on facebook.

What will Biking in Pima County Look Like in 20 Years, you decide.

This fall,  Pima county is going to have an election to decide on the future of our community.  As a cyclist, I have gone through every item and picked out what will benefit us.  This Friday, June 6th, 2015, at 5PM, is the cutoff for submitting arguments that will be sent to every registered voter in Pima County.  I urge you to look at these items and submit a letter showing your support of the bond.  If you need help writing the letter, email me at Damion@DamionAlexander.com or call 520-977-5664 and I’ll help.

These are the items that I feel will impact the cycling community in a direct way. Many of the other projects will create a better community and give us venues to ride to.

Community Bike Ride List April 11- April 19

WOW!!!!  This week we have nearly 120 unique rides, races and events on the list.

I’m considering creating a calendar and changing the format in the weeks to come as this is taking so much time to compile.  Below are all of the sources I check each week for the info that goes into the list.  I put it here with contact info as I think it’s good to verify rides and also to get to know who a group is before you ride with them.  As always, this is a joy for me to share, but it does take me away from work.  Hook a brother up, send some real estate referrals my way.  520-977-5664.  Damion@Damionalexander.com www.DamionAlexander.com

THIS LIST IS PROVIDED AT A COURTESY OF THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM.  THIS LIST IS DEEMED RELIABLE, BUT NOT GUARANTEED.  WHEN POSSIBLE, CONTACT INFORMATION FOR THE GROUP RIDERS ARE PROVIDED.  TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND DOUBLE CHECK OR GO TO THE RIDE AND IF NO ONE IS THERE, GO RIDE BY YOURSELD.
