Mussleman Crit Colossal Cave Road Race Part 1 Colossal Cave Road Race Part 2
The Southern Arizona Omnium is a three day race that includes the Mussleman Crit, the Flap Jack TT and the Colossal Cave Road Race.
The Mussleman Criterium
For 20017 the promoters added a Criterium to the Southern Arizona Omnium. The Crit was held Friday afternoon and evening at the Musselman Honda Circuit Race Course. The First race was at 3:00pm to allow people to make it down without missing work. Personally, I appreciated this decision and think its a good format for getting people to race. The Temperature was still a little toasty for the first few races, but it cooled down and was perfect racing conditions.
The FlapJack Time Trial
The Time Trial was be held in Picacho Arizona, conveniently located halfway between Tucson and Phoenix. I did not have a chance to make it to the TT, but the race promoters say “The road has virtually no traffic and we have secured a large staging area on private property that will allow for parking, registration and warm up all in a safe, out of traffic area, still very close to the start/ finish area. We will be using the course introduced last year for the 3 Bears TT Series. On this date there will be only the 20 K distance so the entire course is on good surface with one turn around.”
The Colossal Cave Road Race
The Colossal Cave Road Race, is a beautiful 9 mile circuit of rolling terrain on Tucson’s East side. The course is a clockwise loop of Colossal Cave Road (freshly widened), Camino Loma Alta, Old Spanish Trail, and Pistol Hill. Feed zone located on Old Spanish Trail at the Pistol Hill intersection. Finish is near the top of the Pistol Hill climb.
