The highly anticipated expansion of the Chuck Huckelberry Loop into North Marana has begun. This new segment of southern Arizona’s multi-use, non-mechanized trail system will connect the existing Loop trail north of Avra Valley Road into the Gladden Farms area. Borderland Construction Company, entrusted with this significant undertaking, began construction in February.
Ed Seith said “I’ve lived in Gladden Farms for almost 11 years. When I want to use The LOOP, which is often, it’s always a binary choice: Do I want to ride surface streets, including that horrible surface down the 1-10 Frontage Road to Avra Valley, where I can pick up the LOOP, or do I want to mount the hitch and load the bike and all my gear into my car and figure out where I’m going to park for four hours? Completing that last stage of the LOOP’s connection to Marana and Gladden Farms takes the guesswork out. I can ride out of my driveway and have safe access to the entire city.”
Many do not realize that all loop-related projects are part of the Pima County Flood Control District, which aims to protect the community from flooding and ensure easier access for first responders in case of an emergency. Since 1978, the flood control district has installed more than 100 miles of bank protection and other infrastructure in Pima County, removing thousands of acres and tens of millions of dollars of property from federal and local floodplains. This essential work may not often make the news, but it plays a crucial role in safeguarding our community. Chuck Huckleberry once said, “You don’t hear much about the regional flood control district. If you did, it would be bad. Flood control is one of the government programs that rarely make the news, except when something goes wrong.”
According to Jim Conroy, the Town of Marana Parks & Recreation Director, the realization of this project is the culmination of years of dedicated efforts by the Town of Marana and Pima County staff. Their unwavering commitment to creating this crucial flood protection measure and the resulting regional trail connection paved the way for this momentous development. The collaboration between local government agencies involved in this project exemplifies their shared vision for the betterment of the entire community.
The significance of this effort cannot be overstated. It is a major stride forward in expanding recreational opportunities, promoting a healthier lifestyle, and ensuring the safety of residents and visitors alike. This significant project has been made possible through funding from the Town of Marana Capital Improvement Program (CIP) with the support of the Pima County Flood Control District (PCFCD).
Personally, I use my bike for work on a daily basis. My goal this year is to drive less miles than I ride and the only reason I’ll get in the car is if I have to pick someone up I can’t fit on my bike. As a realtor, anytime I’m servicing one of my listings or meeting a buyer, I typically get there by bike. Even though I am comfortable riding on the road, getting up to Marana and dealing with all of the semis, heavy equipment, and cement trucks north of Avra Valley Road has not been ideal. It really is incredible how connected the city is for bikes as I can get from my house near Sabino Canyon to Marana and only deal with one stop light”.
The construction is scheduled for completion in early Fall 2024. When the new section is opened there will be 33 miles of contiguous trail along the Santa Cruz River, from Irvington Road to Sanders Road Northwest of Gladden Farms in Marana.
Kevin Craig commented “For some friends of ours, completion of the LOOP connection was THE deciding factor for buying a second home in Gladden Farms.”
To access the new section, riders will exit the Loop on the west bank of the Santa Cruz on Avra Valley Road. They will then cross the Avra Valley Bridge, which features a dedicated bike lane on the south side to accommodate two-way bike traffic. The bridge has a concrete wall to ensure the safety of riders in the bike lane, protecting them from vehicles. After crossing the bridge, riders will then loop under, and proceed northwest on the east bank of the Santa Cruz, passing the CalPortland Cement Plant into North Marana.
Reed Burns said “I ride from Saguaro Bloom to Picacho Peak and BLM camping area for bikepacking. This will make my routes a lot safer! It looks like it will also make it easier to ride to the CAP trail instead of having to drive my bike to the trailhead.”
The Chuck Huckelberry Loop has long been cherished by outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers in southern Arizona. Its existing trail system, renowned for its scenic beauty and accessibility, has attracted countless individuals seeking to engage in various recreational activities such as walking, running, cycling, and rollerblading. This additional new segment will provide the 30,000 residents of North Marana with direct access to the extensive trail network, enabling them to explore the diverse landscapes and natural wonders of the region.
The economic and social impact of this expansion cannot be underestimated. By connecting the Gladden Farms area to the Chuck Huckelberry Loop, local businesses and services in North Marana should experience increased patronage from trail users, further boosting the area’s economic vitality. Additionally, the expansion offers opportunities for community engagement, fostering a sense of belonging and pride among the residents.
Wendi Lucas remarked “Living on the south east side of Tucson, in Vail, the LOOP provides me with a safe, care-free route to my clients in the Foothills and Downtown. It will be exciting to be able to go even further to Gladden Farms. I will be able to do a century through our amazing landscape without needing to worry constantly about cars. The LOOP is a true gem for recreational cyclists, commuters, and visitors to our region.”
The Chuck Huckelberry Loop expansion aligns with the broader vision of promoting sustainable transportation and active lifestyles. By providing safe and accessible trails, this project encourages alternative modes of transportation and reduces reliance on motor vehicles, thereby contributing to the reduction of carbon. With something for everyone, I encourage you to find the time to explore the expansion when it opens and everything already in place!
The greatest joy in life is being a part of a community. My passion is for bikes. With that in mind, I’ve been tracking down everything Bike and putting it all in one place. Being a part of many clubs, knowing people all over the region, having captured over a million images of cyclists and thousands of hours of video, and scoured the internet, my mind is blown away by how much is out there. From BMX, Gravel, Road, MTB, Fat Bikes, slow roles… there is a ride for everyone.
My goal is to create the most comprehensive cycling calendar in the South West with every event in the four corners states, Nevada and Southern California as well as weekly rides in Southern Arizona and volunteering opportunities.
I have all the info and am uploading events every day, but it will be a few weeks before they are all up. So bookmark this link and check back often. https://bikepilgrim.com/events/
Together, mile by smile, we can build the greatest cycling community in the world. We certainly have the passionate people and amazing infrastructure to make it happen.
See something I missed? A typo? Have an idea? Please email Ride List to Damion@Damionalexander.com
I’m ambitious for making the best and most detailed ride and event list in the four corner states. The content is great, but I know that the format of this has room to improve (OK, it sucks) so I’ve been researching the best online calendars and hope to have all of the rides listed below uploaded in the next few weeks. For now, the old format. TONS of events for the first 4 months of the year. Still have not done any Utah rides and if you see anything that I’m missing, please let me know.
In case you did not know, I do this list because I have a passion for cycling, but it does not pay any bills. In order to find the time to do this list all I ask is if you are thinking of buying or selling real estate, or know someone who is, please let me know. Real Estate pays the bills and I can either do traditional real estate marketing like sitting open houses and making cold calls, or provide an actual service, like this ride list. Please and Thanks.
If you know of a ride that’s not on the list, please contact me. Best is text 520-977-5664 or email damion@damionalexander.com.

These rides are not mine. I am only sharing the data. The Damion Alexander Team can’t guarantee anybody’s safety. There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should pay attention and take reasonable precautions. I always use a helmet. I think that helmets should be required when riding. If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in one ear or use a bone conducting system. Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud. Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others. Please also ride within your limitations. You are not racing the Tour de France. If you see someone that is not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention. Do this for your and everybody’s safety.
Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws. We are not lemmings. Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow. Use your head and enjoy your ride.

This list is a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to put it together. All I ask in return for the list is that you remember I’m A REALTOR. If you have a relationship with another REALTOR, I love loyalty and respect those relationships. However, if not, or if you need a second opinion, Please keep me in mind. Many agents spend money advertising for new business, others sit open houses or cold call. My business is based on referrals from past clients and friends. The less time I have to do traditional prospecting the more I can do for the cycling community. For example: this list.
THIS LIST IS PROVIDED AT A COURTESY OF THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM. THIS LIST IS DEEMED RELIABLE, BUT NOT GUARANTEED. WHEN POSSIBLE, CONTACT INFORMATION FOR THE GROUP RIDERS ARE PROVIDED. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND DOUBLE CHECK OR GO TO THE RIDE AND IF NO ONE IS THERE, GO RIDE BY YOURSELF.
This should be called Cycling Week TUCSON! The granddaddy of Tucson Cycling, the event that has put us on the map, El Tour de Tucson is Saturday. The route this year heads South East and South. It’s nice to let your friends in these areas know what to expect so they are not frustrated with delays. Better yet… comne out and cheer on the cyclists. The expo at the TCC is a three day event this year and is worth checking out, even if you are not riding. There will be live Music, food trucks, beer gardens, and a packed convention center with all sorts of vendors.
One new event that’s a part of El Tour is a 5K run. I’m mentioning it because many cyclists have a significant other who might run, but feels left out on race day. Have them come down, run and then hang out at the after party and cheer on the cyclists. A good time for everyone.
The road does not call all who ride. And this weekend a few alternative events are out there. Old Pueblo MTB and Our MTB have MTB rides this weekend. The sandbox showdown is a fat tired bike ride through the washes of Tucson. There will likely be some drinking and other forms of mental adjusting on this route. The El Tour de Chiva also is back. This is a mountain bike ride to Chiva Falls. Bring your own water and other liquids, the falls and the rest of the desert are dry.
I’m big on tradition and can’t imagine not having El Tour De Mural on Sunday. However, Joe can’t make it this year, so I’m leading a very informal ride. The last few years we have been well over 100 rides. This year I’m hoping for a more more manageable crowd. So, this is the only promo. 9:00 for coffee and donuts and Foot in Pedal at 9:30 from the mercado.

It has been some time since I’ve updated the ride list. Hopefully, I can get back to making this happen weekly.
Cycling Season is in full swing with some of the best events coming up in the next few weeks. This weekend the Tumacacori Century returns after a break due to Covid. The University Of Arizona will be hosting a weekend of Cyclocross Racing next weekend. El Tour De Tucson is only a few weeks away. SDMB has a bike ride and work weekend coming up on Mt. Graham where the shred just keeps getting better. Like beer? Epic rides has a bike industry appreciation night at Dragoon on tap. Of course, all the weekly rides are still happening with Tolero Cycling team adding in some new routes each week. Need some new wheels, a bike, some miscellaneous part? Have a box of old gear that you want to sell? The GABA Bike swap is only a week away.

Ah, participatory medals! Are they purely good or purely evil?
In the movie The Incredibles, the super villain says “with everyone super, no one will be.” His point being that if everyone is equal then no one will be special. Should participation medals, or finisher awards, be encouraged and supported? Or do they diminish the event and the sport? Let’s look at both arguments.
Finisher awards can be a great way to boost self-esteem, encourage inclusivity, promote engagement, build a foundation for growth, and create a positive atmosphere. When everyone gets one, participatory medals can also dilute the significance of the medal, reduce competitiveness, create a lack of motivation for improvement, foster unfairness and resentfulness, and lead to diminished resilience and perseverance.
Boosting self-esteem: Finisher awards can help boost the self-esteem and confidence of individuals, especially those who may feel discouraged or left out due to their perceived lack of achievement. Recognizing their effort and participation can motivate them to continue trying and build a sense of accomplishment and self-worth.
Encouraging inclusivity: Finisher awards can create a more inclusive environment by acknowledging and valuing the efforts of everyone involved, regardless of their skill level or performance. This inclusivity can foster a sense of belonging, encourage teamwork, and promote a positive atmosphere.
Promoting engagement: By recognizing participation, individuals may be more motivated to get involved and actively participate in activities, events, or competitions. This can lead to increased engagement and a higher level of involvement from a broader range of individuals.
Building a foundation for growth: Finisher awards can serve as a stepping stone for individuals to further develop their skills and abilities. By acknowledging their initial efforts, individuals may be inspired to strive for improvement and eventually achieve higher levels of success.
Creating a positive atmosphere: Recognizing participation through awards can contribute to a positive and supportive atmosphere, fostering a sense of camaraderie and teamwork. This can enhance collaboration, cooperation, and overall enjoyment of the activity or event.
It’s important to remember that finisher awards should be carefully balanced with recognition for exceptional achievements. This ensures that the awards continue to motivate individuals to push themselves beyond participation and to strive for excellence.
There are definite drawbacks to the participatory medal and it extends beyond the event and into everyday life. While finisher awards have their benefits, some argue that these participation medals can contribute to a weaker society in many ways.
Dilution of significance: When everyone receives a participation medal, it can diminish the value and significance of the awards. It may not provide a clear distinction between outstanding achievements and mere participation, potentially reducing the motivation for individuals to strive for excellence.
Lack of motivation for improvement: If individuals receive a medal solely for participating, they may not feel the need to push themselves beyond their comfort zone or work towards improving their skills. This could hinder personal growth and development, and prevent individuals from realizing their true potential.
Undermining the value of achievement: Participation medals can diminish the importance of achievement and excellence. When everyone receives recognition regardless of their performance or skill level, it may create a sense of entitlement and diminish the drive to excel or put in extra effort. This can lead to a society that lacks individuals who are motivated to push boundaries and strive for greatness.
Unrealistic expectations: By rewarding participation alone, participation medals may create unrealistic expectations in individuals. They might come to expect recognition for simply showing up or putting in minimal effort, without understanding the need for genuine skill development, hard work, and perseverance.
Inflated self-esteem: While participation medals can boost self-esteem in the short term, some argue that they can contribute to an inflated sense of self-worth in the long run. Without receiving constructive feedback or being pushed to improve, individuals may develop an overestimation of their abilities, which can make it challenging for them to handle failure or setbacks in the future.
Reduced competitiveness: By focusing on participation rather than performance, participation medals may reduce the competitive spirit in individuals and society as a whole. Competition can drive innovation, improvement, and the pursuit of excellence. When participation alone is rewarded, the drive to outperform others may diminish, potentially hindering progress and innovation on a societal level.
Diminished resilience and perseverance: Without experiencing failure or facing the need to improve to receive recognition, individuals may struggle to develop resilience and perseverance. Over time, this can lead to a weaker society that lacks individuals who are willing to take risks, learn from failures, and persist in the face of challenges.
Unfairness and resentment: In some cases, individuals who put in extra effort and achieve exceptional results might feel unfairly treated if their accomplishments are not recognized separately from those who simply participated. This could lead to resentment and discourage individuals from investing their best efforts or supporting local events.
It’s important to note that these arguments are not universally agreed upon and the impact of participation awards on society can vary depending on the specific context and implementation. What do you think? Do you seek out events where you will bring home a finisher award for your efforts? Do you proudly display them to celebrate your accomplishments? For those who do regularly find themselves on a podium, does seeing every finisher being handed a medal diminish your victories?
What do you think? Share your thoughts and write us a letter to the editor.

We had some rainy days so I BEEFED up the ride list!
It is the most comprehensive event list for the Southwest and four corner states (and So Cal) for 2023. I’m saying this as I spent two days scouring the internet and in so doing discovered some other lists that are really good, but not at this level. Like the Borg, I have integrated all of the other lists and found links to each event. It includes Road, Mountain Bike, Gravel, Cyclocross, Bike Packing, BMX, Fat Bikes, Track, Downhill and Enduro. Over 140 races/events to choose from. It’s still a work in progress and will continue to grow as I discover new events.
This coming weekend Is one of the top five Cycling Related Events in Tucson that brings all of these groups together. It is the BICAS art Auction.Come support BICAS and help decorate your home and yard in the most classic and timeless style, Bike Art! Even I I have a piece I donated this year and it can be yours. https://bicas.org/auction/

THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM, DAMION ALEXANDER, AND ANYONE ELSE WHO CONTRIBUTES TO THIS LIST SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY ACCIDENT OR INJURY THAT OCCURS ON THSES RIDES. EVERY PERSON IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS AROUND THEM
Each week I’m beefing up the ride list and I could use your help. Please Let me know what is missing.
I added some great events to the ride list this week that are coming up in the next few months. Cyclovia. GABA Bike Swap. Dirty Bunny MTB race. I also put in links to contact Cycle Fit and Zona Cycling about there rides. They are not “open” to everyone, unless you contact them first.
One of my favorite events is finally returning and I’m most excited to announce the return of the BICAS art auction. The BICAS Annual Art Auction needs your help to prepare for this amazing community event. BICAS is seeking bicycle-inspired artworks & art created from bicycle parts. All mediums are accepted as long as it’s bike-themed! This is a great opportunity for artists to show off their art while donating to a good cause. To donate include your name and contact info. Please make your art ready to display by including any wall hangers, frames, or display stands. Donations are accepted in our shop any time during open hours by Dec. 1st.For more info about the art auction visit: https://bicas.org/auction/
If you know of a ride that’s not on the list, please contact me. Best is text 520-977-5664 or email damion@damionalexander.com.
This week the ride I’m recommending is Tour of The White Mountains.
I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops. You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves. Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.
The Arizona Endurance Series rides have not set dates for 2022. I’ll add them as the promoters share them. The website is https://rockyroad5050.wordpress.com/ The weak need not apply.

These rides are not mine. I am only sharing the data. The Damion Alexander Team can’t guarantee anybody’s safety. There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should pay attention and take reasonable precautions. I always use a helmet.
It’s been a hot minute since I put out the ride list. It seemed that every time I was about to do it there was a spike in COVID. Even though the risk of getting Covid on a bike was unlikely, to me, encouraging people to gather was not the responsible to do. At some point, we need to all go on living our lives and while some people may not be interested in being in a group of any sort, I feel that it is past time to give others the option to meet. Since it’s been sometime the list is somewhat anemic. Many of the weekly rides stopped for COVID and never started again. If you know of a ride that’s not on the list, please contact me. Best is text 520-977-5664 or email damion@damionalexander.com.
This week the three rides I personally would check out are Loop The Loop on Saturday, Bicycle Raches Crit races on Sunday as well as Our MTB Loma aAlta to Pistol Hill on Sunday.
