Community Ride List June 25- July 1, 2016

Last Sunday hit a 20 year High in the Old Pueblo.  However, it has not stopped people from riding both on the road and mountain Bikes.  I find that a great way of dealing with the heat is to ride at 4:30AM. Finish before 9AM.  Go to work for a few hours and do what people in Tucson have done for centuries during the heat of the day. Take a siesta!

Tomorrow is a fun ride that benefits BICAS.  It is the 3rd annual “Hottest Day of the Year Ride” BBQ and Pool Party! An easy-paced benefit ride for those of us who brave the scorching Tucson summers, with fun stops to cool down and mingle. The ride ends at Menlo Park where participants will enjoy a family-style BBQ and take a refreshing dip in the pool. Quickly becoming one of Tucson most-anticipated summertime shindigs!

This list is a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to put it together.  All I ask in return for the list is that you remember I’m A REALTOR.  If you have a relationship with another REALTOR, I love loyalty and respect those relationships.  However, if not, or if you need a second opinion, Please keep me in mind.  Many agents spend money advertising for new business, others sit open houses or cold call.  My business is based on referrals from past clients and friends.  The less time I have to do traditional prospecting the more I can do for the cycling community.  For example: this list.

____________________________________________________________________________I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

RIDE AND EVENT DISCLAIMER

These rides are not mine.  I am only sharing the data.  The Damion Alexander Team  cannot guarantee anybody’s safety.  There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should  pay attention and take reasonable precautions.  I always use a helmet.  I think that Helmets are required when riding.  If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in the right ear and keep the headset out of the left ear. Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud.  Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others.  Please also ride within your limitations. You are  not racing the Tour de France.  If you see someone  that is  not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention  Dothis for your and everybody’s safety.

Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws.  We are not lemmings.  Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow.  Use your head and enjoy your ride.

THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM, DAMION ALEXANDER, AND ANYONE ELSE WHO CONTRIBUTES TO THIS LIST SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY ACCIDENT OR INJURY THAT OCCURS ON THSES RIDES.  EVERY PERSON IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS AROUND THEM

THIS LIST IS PROVIDED AT A COURTESY OF THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM.  THIS LIST IS DEEMED RELIABLE, BUT NOT GUARANTEED.  WHEN POSSIBLE, CONTACT INFORMATION FOR THE GROUP RIDERS ARE PROVIDED.  TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND DOUBLE CHECK OR GO TO THE RIDE AND IF NO ONE IS THERE, GO RIDE BY YOURSELF.

Community ride list June 11-18

In the last ride list I was so excited about the low temperatures, but said “of course, it will likely jump into a record high the following week with temps in the 120’s just to bring us back to reality.”  Well, I was off by 8 degrees as we only hit 112.  It was the second earliest it has hit 110 in history.

I’m skipping past anything on global warming and heading for ideas of coping with the heat.

I have been putting in more miles now than at any point this year and have a secrets for dealing with the heat.  If you have a bathtub, fill it up and leave it full.  It will drop to room temperature.  A post ride dunk is the difference between being able to function the rest of the day or being a blob.  It refreshes both the mind and body.

Other tricks that work include starting your ride in the dark so you are done before 8AM, night rides, keeping hydrated, heading up Mt. Lemmon or to any state north of Arizona.

Ride list May 28- June 3

Can you believe that we are at the end of May and still seeing temperatures in the 80’s.  On a ride this week with a 5:30AM start I was actually feeling chilled.  It looks like this trend is holding until next Friday. Of course, it will likely jump into a record high the following week with temps in the 120’s just to bring us back to reality.

This weekend has a great challenge with the Triple Crown Challenge.  Three Days, Mt. Graham, Kitt Peak and Mt. Lemmon.  It is only $20 for each SAG supported event or all 3 for $50.  Contact Tim Carolan at timcarolan.mac.com for more details.

Community Ride List May 21-28

It’s starting to heat up.  Over the Memorial weekend GABA offers one of the most affordable and fun 3 days of bike touring in Northern Arizona and New Mexico with the Luna Lake Ride.  If you are willing to camp it only costs 125.00 and includes food, transportation of your bags and SAG stops and support.  I have done this ride twice and highly recommend the entire experience.

For more details check out this page. http://www.bikegaba.org/content.aspx?page_id=87&club_id=307669&item_id=480677

Saturday is the grand opening of the Loop on the Pantano.  With this section open the Loop is only missing the section from Tanque Verde to Craycroft.  It is likely to be completed before the end of next year.

Wednesday is the best networking ride.  It is called the Business Builder Bike Ride.  It is a mountain Bike ride, but also is off the loop, so there is opportunity for everyone to come out.  Best part, it ends with Beer.

In loving memory and celebration. Dress up. Be sad. Be happy. Party like it’s 1999. The Loud Bike will be blasting His music.

We’ll end the ride in the courtyard behind Johnny Gibson’s Market. The alley in back is closed to cars so there’s lots of bike parking and room for dancing. They have food and drink and bathrooms, and (drumroll!) they’ll have all Prince karaoke starting at 9pm.

The Business Builder Bike Ride Celebrates year 6

For 6 years the Business Builder Bike Ride has met monthly to network, build businesses, ride mountain bikes and drink beer.  April 27th at 4PM is the anniversary ride at Sweetwater Preserve Trailhead.

This ride is the brainchild of two of the most creative and professional businessmen in Tucson, Matt and Brandon Blair from Cirrus Visual Communication. Some people just have it all together.  From family, business, fitness, friends, community involvement and everything else they are a part of.  I have seen many rides start and fail, but this ride just gets better and bigger each month.

Links to 36 plus photo albums from 6 years of Business Builder Bike rides are at the bottom of this page.

DSC_1735

The BBBR is a monthly gathering and alternates between Sweetwater Preserve and Fantasy Island.   The format is to do a quick pre-ride meet and greet.  This is limited mostly to who you are and what you do professionally.  Then we get on our bikes and ride.  Post ride beer, hangin’ out trail side, and a call for any upcoming events that we are working on.

This is how Cirrus Visual describes the BBBR.  “If you haven’t heard about this event, think of it as business networking on your bike. Some people do business on the golf course…we love to ride our mountain bikes, and know there are other business professionals like us.

Whether you like to ride fast, or are just venturing into the dirt, all riding levels are welcome! Just bring your bike, helmet and business cards, and we’ll bring the post-ride refreshments. Join us this month and bring a friend – new riders are what keep this event growing!”

DSC_5175

Personally, this is one of my favorite rides based on the location, people, scenery, networking and beer.  If you want to go really fast, there is still someone faster.  If you are affectionately known as “the turtle” you will not be left out on the trail by yourself.  Since we start and stop in the same place and the trails we use have extra loops for those who want extra credit everyone can get in the ride they want and still not feel like they are being left out or left behind.  Also, beer, FREE beer (usually)  hoppily greets you at the end of the ride.  So you ask,  Is this really networking or just an excuse to cut out of work, ride bikes and drink beer?   I have now helped 9 friends buy or sell their homes as a direct result of this ride, but you should join us and decide for yourself.

You can sign up for an automatic invite at http://www.cirrusvisual.com/teamcirrus/bizandbikes.html or look up Cirrus Visual on Facebook.

Cyclovia Spring 2016 First Album- A little of everything

Heading West from Himmel Park

Cyclovia at Himmel Park Earth Day Celebration

What is a Cyclovia?(from the http://www.cycloviatucson.org/ website)

Cyc˙lo˙via (/ˌsklɵˈv.ə/) n.
A Spanish word signifying the temporary closure of a network of streets to cars so that they become “open” to  people. During Cyclovia anyone can bike, walk, skate and participate in fun, free activities.

One of the first and largest cyclovias in the world is held in Bogotá, Colombia.  Every Sunday and holiday, every week of the year, the city closes down over 70 miles of roadways to cars to invite people to bike, walk, talk, exercise, picnic, sunbathe, etc. in the streets.  People from all backgrounds come together in this beautiful community-inspiring event.

Cyclovia in Tucson

Why have a Cyclovia in Tucson? Because Tucson has a lot of streets and it’s not everyday that you can be in them car-free and care-free.  Take your whole family out for this great opportunity to explore and experience Tucson’s roads without the presence of cars.

Cyclovia gives people from the greater Tucson region the chance to enjoy great weather, see neighbors, friends and people from throughout the area, and get a little exercise – all on city streets that will be closed to car traffic and open to walkers, joggers, cyclists, skaters and all other forms of people-powered movement.

Motor vehicles are detoured from the route allowing everyone the freedom to enjoy “open streets” safely and comfortably.  Cyclovia isn’t a race, parade or competition.  Instead, it’s a chance to enjoy Tucson from a new perspective (outside of the car).  Walk your dog, roller skate, blow bubbles.  Have fun because during Cyclovia, the streets are yours!

CycloMesa – Tour De Mesa, Two Wheel Jones Crit and Arizona Bike Summit

The city of Mesa opened its arms to the Arizona cycling community with the Arizona Bike Summit, Tour De Mesa, Two Wheel Jones Crit and other activities in the 5th annual Cyclomesa Celebration.

I think this is a great template for what Tucson can do to attract even more people to El Tour De Tucson.

Complete with a beer garden, food trucks, vendors and live music, this kick-off party is a great way to showcase your company or brand to thousands of onlookers and a prime demographic. Saturday’s festival compliments the start/finish line of El Tour de Mesa, a 72-mile bike ride and the sister ride to the famous El Tour de Tucson. CycloMesa is all about adventure and taking risks. Attendees will have full, free access to the zip line, rock wall, BMX Freestyle Show, the Extreme Sports Zone and the Kid’s Splash Zone. A perfect ending to a thrilling weekend, Sunday hosts activities geared toward another round of competitive riders and families. The El Tour de Criterium State Championships will offer a series of races throughout the day. Enjoy the Mesa Outdoor Adventure Challenge, a family-friendly Amazing Race type event that takes participants on a fun scavenger hunt on their bicycles around Downtown Mesa.”

Bike Ride list April 09 – April 15

April is the Official Bike Month in Tucson.  It means the ride list needs the most attention.  It is also one of the busiest times for me as A REALTOR.

When it comes to the ride list or taking care of my clients, my clients are going to win every time.  I just wish I had more time in the week and was able to get the ride list out earlier and have every ride. I’ll focus on a few of the big rides this week and provide links to all the other ride list calendars below.

April 9th – The Tour De Cookie  is a fundraising event for the many local, national and international projects that the Marana Rotary Club undertakes each year; but it is also a time where members of the community at large can come together for that most scrumptious of American desserts: the cookie. The path is along a 31-mile loop of the Santa Cruz river bike path, various stations will be handing out cookies to joyful riders. This is not a race, but a casual ride with great freinds, family and uniquely delicious cookies.https://www.facebook.com/events/1700119726893708/

April 10th Sunday is Cyclovia.  Rain or shine, it is going to happen.  This is one of the best community events of the year and is on a brand new course from Barrio Trails to Himmel Park.  http://www.cycloviatucson.org/

April 15th Ride for Reading.  We have collected the books, set up a car free route on the Loop to the school, and will be delivering books on bikes.  After the ride we are heading to Ermanos on 4th for New Belgium beer and food specials.  In 2015 I went on over 250 rides and I can say the Ride For Reading was one of the top 5 rides.  This ride represents everything good about the bike.  It is doing a community service, it’s helping kids, it’s books, it’s friends, it’s food and drinks.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/1494064017562139/

April 16th El Grupo presents its 13th Annual Bicycle Scavenger Hunt, brought to you by New Belgium Brewing, as a fundraiser to support its mission of empowering youth through bicycles on Saturday, April 16th, 2016!The super fun, challenging and yet also family-friendly event will begin check-in 8:30 – 9am and start at 9:30am for full distance event and 10am for family distance at El Grupo’s clubhouse near downtown. Enjoy coffee and treats from Beyond Bread while you get ready to ride! the http://www.elgrupocycling.org/scavenger-hunt/

April 17th Tour De Cure Showcasing the splendor of the Sonoran Desert in bloom, the Tucson Tour de Cure offers cyclists the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Southwest in spring. Riders of all abilities may choose their route—from a family-friendly 10K to a challenging 100K (Metric Century) route, all designed by experienced cyclists to offer safe and scenic rides in the natural landscape of the desert Southwest. http://main.diabetes.org/site/TR/TourdeCure/TourAdmin?pg=entry&fr_id=11062

Community Bike Ride List March 26-April 1

The past 2 weeks I have way to many calls, emails, texts, PM and conversations that seem to be extra critical of cyclists.  I was asked to share some messages by different people, organizations and government agencies that asked for cyclists to be more considerate and it resulted in me being slammed by some in the cycling community.  In case anyone had a question, my life has been dedicated for almost a decade to promoting cycling and my interest is in doing everything to promote bikes and outdoor recreation. However, I am not “the Man”  and it is not my job to try and police the community, but I will continue to share this message “Be KIND and Don’t be THAT GUY”.

On a plus side I received this note from NOAO and it’s nice knowing people are encouraging others to keep an eye out for us.

“Since Spring is in the air, we need to be aware of the increase in bicycle and motorcycle traffic sharing the roads with us. Bicycle and motorcycle accidents are on the rise and we need to keep a watchful eye out for the two-wheeled riders! When making turns, take a second look to make sure you didn’t miss one of these vehicles!

“There are blind spots, and motorcycles and bicycles have a tendency to hide in those little tiny blind spots.”

For those of you driving to or from Kitt Peak, there are bicycle racing teams taking advantage of racing up the mountain road and then cruising down. Be aware of theses folks and share the road with them! Also we have many motorcyclists coming up to visit Kitt Peak.

Be aware and keep everyone safe! Drive Aware! Ride Aware!”

THANKS NOAO for being aware.  You Are KIND!
