Volunteering at the Tucson Bicycle Classic

Volunteering at the Race

Volunteers are what makes events happen…

In the words of David Burke “I’m either racing or volunteering”  Be like David.

Putting on something like the Tucson Bicycle Classic requires many volunteers that are excited to help the community and fellow racers. A stage race like the TBC simply cannot happen without your help. Thank you for volunteering.

El Grupo Fall Fondo

The El Grupo Fall Fondo is more than a bike ride. It is a celebration of El Grupo Youth Cycling and one of the best opportunities of the year to ride with and support the next generation of Tucson cyclists.

Choose from 35, 50, or 75-mile routes through Tucson, then return to the El Grupo Clubhouse for the real heart of the event: food, drinks, music, an auction, and a chance to hang out with El Grupo riders, coaches, families, and supporters.

This is a fundraiser, not a race. Proceeds support El Grupo Youth Cycling and its work using bicycles to help young people build confidence, skills, friendships, and independence while making cycling accessible regardless of a family’s ability to pay.

If you love Tucson’s cycling community, this is an important one to support. Come for a great ride and leave knowing your miles are helping put more Tucson kids on bikes.

Mt. Graham- State Hill Climb Championships

The Mt. Graham Hill Climb is one of Arizona’s classic tests on two wheels and the Arizona State Hill Climb Championship. Starting outside Safford, the race heads straight up the Swift Trail into the Pinaleño Mountains, trading Sonoran Desert for pine forest and cool mountain air as the road climbs higher and higher.

And when we say climb, we mean climb. The full course is roughly 20 miles with about 5,700 feet of elevation gain, making Mt. Graham one of the biggest sustained road climbs in Arizona. Shorter 10-mile categories are offered for some age and masters divisions.

This isn’t a ride where you’re wondering when the next hill starts. The hill is the ride. Pace yourself, settle into a rhythm, enjoy the changing landscape and try to remember to look around occasionally as you climb thousands of feet above the desert floor.

For racers, there are Arizona State Championship titles on the line. For everyone else, there is the satisfaction of reaching the top of one of the most formidable paved climbs in the Southwest.

20 miles. 5,700 feet of climbing. One very large mountain.

Tucson 10er

Tucson 10’er at Old Tucson may have one of the most uniquely Tucson settings of any mountain bike race. This 10-hour endurance race takes place at historic Old Tucson, the legendary movie studio where countless Westerns were filmed, surrounded by towering saguaros and the rugged Tucson Mountains.

Race solo, as a duo, or put together a team and spend the day ripping wicked-fast Sonoran Desert singletrack. Between laps, Old Tucson becomes part race headquarters and part party, with a large barn, bar, stage, vendors, and plenty of room for racers, friends, and families to hang out.

And the location is hard to beat. You’re riding through classic Sonoran Desert scenery with Saguaro National Park next door, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum just down the road, and Tucson only a short drive over the hill.

Come to race hard, trade laps with friends, or simply spend a January day riding bikes through the saguaros. Ten hours of fast singletrack, Old West atmosphere, spectacular desert scenery, and a venue you won’t find anywhere else.

After a sucessful first year, Zia Rides will be back in Tucson again in 2026. Mark your calendars!

This 10 hour race for solos, duos, and teams takes place at historic Old Tucson Studios, the film site for many famous westerns. The main venue comes with sweeping views of saguaro covered mountains along with old-timey fun on the studio grounds for racers and their families to enjoy. The main event space is a large barn with bar, stage and plenty of space for vendors and hanging out. The singletrack is wicked fast, and we expect fast lap times through the towering saguaros. Tucson Road Clean Up

Ever go on a bike ride see a bunch of trash on the side of the road and think someone should clean it up because it would enhance your ride? Well, that someone can be you. Come help make our roads look better. Many hands make light work.

The best part is meeting other like minded people who are giving back to make our community a better place.

Hey everybody, clean up time again. We will meet at the church’s lower parking lot, drive up and walk back picking up garbage. Bring water, good shoes, and a poker/grabber. I have the bags and vests. Food somewhere after is usually a thing.

LOVE OUR CITY 2024 Tucson Refugee HQ Bike Assembly Event

Old Pueblo MTB has done a couple of these Bike Builds now, and word has gotten out that we’ve been amazing.
Last year 2023 & in 2022 we assembled a teams to put together 115 bikes that were donated by Jim Click, The Conquistadors & El Tour De Tucson for a big city wide event getting 500 new bikes into the community for families in need. We had some of the best mechanics and helpful hands OPMTB has to offer who just killed the assembly in record time.
This time Tucson Refugee Ministry needs our help. They received a grant to get 100 Bikes they can give to Adult Refugees here in Tucson in their system, much needed transportation. These Bikes will help these Refugees get back on their feet, give them transportation to get to Jobs & Schooling.
This Saturday – March 2nd, 2024 we’ll just be assembling half of them… or about 50 bikes. Based on our experience, and with about 12-15 “mechanics” and the support help we’ve already lined up, we expect that to go quickly.
We’re looking for 12-15 “Skilled” Bike assembly mechanics to help for a few hours. We’d love to have you on the team if you have some basic tools you can bring and want to be apart of assembling these bikes. Please speak up here if you’d like to be on the team again, or for the first time.
SECONDARY OPPORTUNITY
ALSO AVAILABLE TO HELP ::: we’ll be doing a “Flat Repair Clinic” at 1:00pm to teach some of these new bike owners how to fix a flat with the appropriate repair kits they are going to receive. If this is something you want to help with this would be from 1:00pm – 3:00pm.
