Marana Rotary Tour De Cookie Bike Ride
he 2024 event is coming together. The route is set. Shirts, wristbands, and bags are being ordered. Booth volunteers are being finalized. Sponsorships are coming in. I can’t wait for March 9, 2024!!!
Last year, we had to close rider registrations early because we hit our 400-rider cap. This year, we are preparing our booths to be ready for 500 riders. So please, register soon to guarantee your spot in the Tour.
The 2024 route was adjusted because of construction on The Loop path northwest toward Marana. However, I am excited that this year’s route takes riders northeast toward Oro Valley and back.
Riders will have several options:
Start at Rillito Racetrack and ride 12 miles, turning around at El Camino de la Tierra cookie booth.
Want a few more cookies? Add a section along CDO Wash.
Want to start your ride in Oro Valley? Saddle up at Steam Pump Ranch and ride along the Canada del Oro for a 17.5 mile-ride to the racetrack.
To maximize calorie replacement, ride all 33.5 miles of the Tour de Cookie. It should be a blast!!

Ripsey Arizona Endurance Series
When:
March 9, 2024
The A (61 miles) will start at 7:30am.
The B route (34 miles) will start at 9am.
Camping is allowed at the Ripsey trail head – although there are no facilities
Where:
You will start at the Ripsey trail head off of E Florence Kelvin Highway near Kelvin, Arizona. Google map directions to the trail head are here.
What:
The Ripsey ride will be split into 2 different lengths so that you can choose how much AZT goodness you wish to experience.
The A loop (61 miles) will be a the best choice for those who have the endurance. This route will climb on dirt roads all the way to the Freeman Road water cache on the AZT. From there you get to blast down the roller coaster ride known as the Boulders segment. After some relatively rugged jeep roads and some not very well marked twistys through the desert you get to do the famous “Switchback Hill” up to the Ripsey ridgeline. Pause to take in the views before ripping along the ridgeline. Finally you drop down to the finish on an extended downhill section.
The B loop will start the same as the A, with a lovely grind up Florence Kelvin Highway – to the very top of the world. From there you’ll take Tecolote Rd. and some dodgy singletrack over to the AZT. You will be momentarily sad that you missed the Boulders segment, but soon enough will be dropping down into Ripsey Wash and facing Switchback Hill. Once you reach the Ripsey ridgeline and marvel at how fricking big Asarco Ray Mine is, you’ll be heading toward that final epic downhill.
Water:
In a race of this length and remoteness, water is a concern. Bring as much as you can! We’ve done some scouting and found some possible water sources – non of which are 100% reliable. Water sources are marked (as waypoints) on the GPS files.
For the A loop the Freeman Road cache “usually” has water – but that is totally dependent on kind people restocking it. If you happen to be in that area (EVER) it is good Karma to bring a few gallons for the cache.
Both A and B loops go by “Bathtub Spring”. This has always had water when I’ve been through there, but a recent report said it was dry. This is a cattle trough, so you’ll want to filter any water you get from it.
Route:
It is HIGHLY recommended that you bring, and know how to use, a GPS for this race. There are some sections on the AZT where the trail is not terribly well marked. Using a GPS and paying attention are the best ways to stay on course and not get lost. GPS files for both courses can be obtained at the links below.

Post ride:
Bring a chair, beverages, food, whatever. Hang out and watch the folks doing the longer routes come in. Spend some time getting to know the super cool people who share this strange compulsion to push themselves to their limits. Witness the pain, utter exhaustion, and sense of accomplishment of anyone who finishes the A loop.

Wednesday Loop Ride-Nexxis B/1/54
Details
Ride Description:
This is a recurring full loop ride that takes place every two weeks. We will make a brief stop for coffee at Ren Coffee House at the 35-mile point. We will be treated to views of four different mountain ranges, as well as the Tucson skyline along the way.
This ride will start at Pour My Coffee at the intersection of E Valencia and S. Nexxis Dr. We will travel gradually downhill through the Julian Greenway to the Santa Cruz bike path. We will return along the Rillito and Pantano washes, and then finish on the fabulous bike path next to Fantasy Island.
Re-groupings may be as much as ten miles apart for a few minutes. If you are farther off the pace than that, please navigate to the coffee shop or finish.. This ride is about gaining some fitness, and of course spending time with new and old friends.
Participation rules:
Your GABA membership should be current. Bring food & fluids for 4 hours. Front and back flashing lights are encouraged on The Loop. Helmets must be worn at all times while riding. No ear buds. This ride is unsupported. Please obey traffic laws and represent GABA well.
Notes:
Start Time: Arrive by 8:15 AM for sign-in, meeting others, and overview. Wheels rolling by 8:30 AM.
Final rolling average- 17+ mph. Rolling speeds may be higher.
Terrain: Relatively flat bike paths, one easy climb of less than 200 ft.
Total Elevation Gain: 960 ft.
Traffic: Special attention is required along Ajo.
Ride Type: Training/ Re-group.
Parking: Ample parking at Safeway parking lot.

GABA – OFF THE GRID-Monster Gravel- Intermediate/4/55
Details
Ride Description:
We will travel from Sonoita on a combination of pavement and singletrack to the eclectic town of Patagonia alongside the Patagonia Mountains. After climbing along Harshaw Creek we will cross the stunning San Rafael Valley, and climb over rugged Canelo Pass.
We will return on hilly pavement through “The Grasslands” to the Vaughn Loop and Papago Springs Rd. When we finally hit pavement we will roll downhill three miles into Sonoita. The last ten miles of this route are new.
In total this route is over 33 miles of gravel, 22 miles of pavement, and 3,000 ft. of climbing. It is challenging and requires intermediate+ skills.
PLEASE READ: This ride is NOT suitable for mountain bikes due significant road riding. Gravel bikes only please. It is also not suitable for Novice gravel riders. We will be riding singletrack, doubletrack, dirt roads, and may even bushwack a short section.
Bathrooms are available in the Sonoita Mercantile Country Store at the start, and at Ovens of Patagonia in Patagonia.
Notes:
Ride Type: Social/Re-group.
Pace: 12 mph on gravel, 15 mph on pavement.
Terrain: 12 miles downhill to Patagonia, long uphill to Canelo Pass, then rolling pavement back to Sonoita.
Total Elevation Gain: 3,000 ft.
Traffic: light with the exception of Rt. 82. Please have rear flashing light on your bike.
Group Size: This ride is limited to ten riders.

Tortolita 50 Arizona Endurance Series
Arizona Endurance Series
The Arizona Endurance Series (AES) consists of a number or grassroots, endurance races and rides. At the beginning of the year, the Antelope Peak Challenge will open the series with some little known singletrack near the town of Oracle. We have another Tucson ride, the Tortilita 50, at the beginning of February. Next up is a ride that includes the famed Ripsey ridgeline. This is a great chance to check out a remote and rarely ridden section of the AZT. In March we will be heading to Red Rock country for the Sedona Big Friggin Loop. Have you ever wanted to explore singletrack in Prescott? Come out to the Prescott Monstercross. We wrap up spring with a ride in the mountains of Flagstaff at the Aspen Asphyxiation. Then we will break until fall. First event of the fall season will be the Tusayan Tussle – up near the Grand Canyon. Then, a new addition to the calendar – Mogollon Mayhem. Next up is a 4 day stage race – Coconino 250 . The year will finish out with the Kentucky Camp, Picketpost Punisher and, Pleasantville.
There are no fees, no prizes, but all attempts will be made to record your finish time in comparison to others. The goal is to finish these challenges while setting your own pace. A start time and route are provided here and it is up to the participant to understand the route, and also have full responsibility for their navigation and well being. These are not group rides, although some people might do these as rides with friends or even other riders they meet at the start, along the route. Since the events are self-supportive, it should be understood that these are for experienced backcountry cyclists only. If you question your ability to complete such an event, it is best that you consider another option before trying one of these. Also, maps, gps devices, water filtration units, and other back country tools are methods to ensure you complete the race. Therefore it is up to you – and you alone – to ensure your safety!! The goal of the Arizona Endurance Series is to promote responsible grassroots endurance mountain biking in Arizona, and to provide a competitive outlet for the state’s current endurance racers – most of whom currently go out of state to compete. The AES will help train current endurance riders and perhaps enhance success by Arizonans in national events. We recommend that you join the Facebook site for all the updates, maps, and questions. So if you have interest, come on out and join us, and do your part to contribute to this grassroots effort! Only 74 participants can do the event, so make sure to sign up on each event page. Also, if you have any questions, you can use the comment section below each event.
The Ride List
I’m ambitious for making the best and most detailed ride and event list in the four corner states. The content is great, but I know that the format of this has room to improve (OK, it sucks) so I’ve been researching the best online calendars and hope to have all of the rides listed below uploaded in the next few weeks. For now, the old format. TONS of events for the first 4 months of the year. Still have not done any Utah rides and if you see anything that I’m missing, please let me know.
In case you did not know, I do this list because I have a passion for cycling, but it does not pay any bills. In order to find the time to do this list all I ask is if you are thinking of buying or selling real estate, or know someone who is, please let me know. These rides are not mine. I am only sharing the data. The Damion Alexander Team can’t guarantee anybody’s safety. There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should pay attention and take reasonable precautions. I always use a helmet. I think that helmets should be required when riding. If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in one ear or use a bone conducting system. Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud. Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others. Please also ride within your limitations. You are not racing the Tour de France. If you see someone that is not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention. This list is a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to put it together. All I ask in return for the list is that you remember I’m A REALTOR. If you have a relationship with another REALTOR, I love loyalty and respect those relationships. However, if not, or if you need a second opinion, Please keep me in mind. Many agents spend money advertising for new business, others sit open houses or cold call. My business is based on referrals from past clients and friends. It’s Mountain Bike season in the Old Pueblo as many people are gearing up for the 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo. Need wood for your camp site? I had to take down a eucalyptus tree last year and have seasoned wood. If you need some, feel free to drop me a line.
I said this in the last ride list, but feel compelled to restate it. I’m reticent about putting out the ride list with COVID on the rise, but feel it’s your choice if you want to be in a group. I do hope that those who are feeling any symptoms avoid groups and if the ride heads inside for beverages you respect social distancing and local laws on masks.
In creating this list I’m amazed how many rides are still not happening. Others are back, but have asked not to publicly share at this time. I’m sure I’m missing some rides and events, so please text me at 520-977-5664 or email Damion@DamionAlexander.com if you know of something that should be on this list. I’m sure with each week the list will be enhanced.

RIDE AND EVENT DISCLAIMER
These rides are not mine. I am only sharing the data. The Damion Alexander Team can’t guarantee anybody’s safety. There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should pay attention and take reasonable precautions. I always use a helmet. I think that helmets should be required when riding. If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in one ear or use a bone conducting system. Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud. Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others. Please also ride within your limitations. You are not racing the Tour de France. If you see someone that is not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention. Do this for your and everybody’s safety.
Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws. We are not lemmings. Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow. Use your head and enjoy your ride.
