I’ve been really busy working on the distracted driving summit at the State Capital in Phoenix on the 25^th. We need to have a GIGANTIC turn out so the state can see how important safety is. There will be a ride from Tempe to the Capital that morning. Please share the event and do what you can to make it!

This list is a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to put it together. All I ask in return for the list is that you remember I’m A REALTOR. If you have a relationship with another REALTOR, I love loyalty and respect those relationships. However, if not, or if you need a second opinion, Please keep me in mind. The Community Ride List for December 3-10

It’s arrived!!! The month when we don’t have time to do anything because we are doing everything. Holiday Parties, shopping, family, travel, and hours and hours of frustrating time in traffic.

With the shorter days and colder weather finding time to ride the Bike can be allusive. Having once successfully ridden 365 days straight, I recommend that you make the bike ride the top priority. Ride as early in the day as possible, if not the days will just slip away. Also, figure out the appropriate gear ASAP. Gloves? Head warmer? Arm and Leg Warmers? Jacket? Wicking base layer? Boot Covers? No matter how cold it gets in Tucson there is cycling apparel that can keep you at a comfortable riding temperature and is still flexible enough to allow for hours of riding.

I would also consider commuting to get in the miles and you might find with the traffic you get there faster. Since it is not hot, you won’t arrive sweaty. Personally, I keep a few suits in the office and ride on the days I know I’m not meeting clients. I guarantee, you will have a Happy Holiday Season if you spend more time in the saddle and less behind the wheel of the auto.

We are almost there. The grand daddy of Tucson Rides. Over 8000 riders will be taking over the streets of Tucson next weekend for the Tucson Medical Center 34^th El Tour de Tucson presented by Casino del Sol. For many, it’s a good week to taper. For others, like me, it might be about time to start training;-)

I’d like to THANK all who have donated to my ride for a child as well as everyone who has been riding for the other 60 beneficiaries of El Tour. I’ve been thinking that next year I’d like to ride for each and every one of them. It fuels my soul seeing so many help others doing what they love. Truly a win/win. There are many activities that surround the El Tour Super Week, beginning one week prior to ride day, includes a 2-day El Tour Bike, Fitness & Health EXPO, El Tour Orientation Meetings, a Rusing, Lopez & Lizardi El Tour Dedication Dinner at Casino del Sol and an 8-day Indoor El Tour program.

Ride day begins with the Rio Nuevo 104-mile Main Event followed by the 76-Mile El Tour, the 54-Mile El Tour, the 40-Mile El Tour, the Town of Marana 28-Mile El Tour as well as the Tucson Medical Center El Tour Fun Ride presented by McDonald’s. Tune into the Cenpatico Integrated Care Ride Day Radio Show on ESPN Tucson for up-to-the-minute coverage of the front runners as well as interviews and updates from the remote starts. The HSL Properties Downtown Fiesta with kids activities, music, a Michelob ULTRA Garden, food, massages and an on-going Grand Cycling Awards Ceremony round out the day.

I’d like to personally THANK everyone who participated in the Tucson Tour De Cure. My passion and support for this event is based on a firm belief that getting people on bikes is a cure for many people with Type 2 diabetes. It also shows that those with Type 1 can lead an active lifestyle and manage their diabetes.

My personal physician, Dr. Alex Perrian, with New Peublo Medicine, is a perfect example of someone who took control of his diabetes. 18 years ago when I went to my annual physical I had put on a few pounds from the previous year. Dr. Perrian said it is not a big deal, enjoy life, and that it is normal for a man to ad a few pounds a year. My wife said that at the rate I was going in 20 years I would be 220 pounds, 40-50 pounds overweight. Whereas, I heard that and watched my weight, Dr. Perrian did put on a pound or two a year. He was just following the advice he had given me of enjoying life to it’s fullest.

A few years ago, as a result of this lifestyle he found that his blood glucose level classified him as being diabetic. In response to this finding he changed his diet and got on the bike. He dropped weight, he found more energy, and his tests now show he is not diabetic. The advice he is now giving his patients is, be active. His advice is working as New Pueblo Medicine was one of the top fundraising team this year with over $7000 raised for The Tour De Cure with 11 team members!!!

Dr. Perrian is just one of the hundreds of great stories from this event. Again, THANKS everyone for participating and next year I look forward to seeing even more of you out there.

Bike Ride list April 09 – April 15

April is the Official Bike Month in Tucson. It means the ride list needs the most attention. It is also one of the busiest times for me as A REALTOR.

When it comes to the ride list or taking care of my clients, my clients are going to win every time. I just wish I had more time in the week and was able to get the ride list out earlier and have every ride. I’ll focus on a few of the big rides this week and provide links to all the other ride list calendars below.

April 9^th – The Tour De Cookie is a fundraising event for the many local, national and international projects that the Marana Rotary Club undertakes each year; but it is also a time where members of the community at large can come together for that most scrumptious of American desserts: the cookie. The path is along a 31-mile loop of the Santa Cruz river bike path, various stations will be handing out cookies to joyful riders. April 10^th Sunday is Cyclovia. Rain or shine, it is going to happen. This is one of the best community events of the year and is on a brand new course from Barrio Trails to Himmel Park. http://www.cycloviatucson.org/

April 15^th Ride for Reading. We have collected the books, set up a car free route on the Loop to the school, and will be delivering books on bikes. After the ride we are heading to Ermanos on 4^th for New Belgium beer and food specials. In 2015 I went on over 250 rides and I can say the Ride For Reading was one of the top 5 rides. This ride represents everything good about the bike. The past 2 weeks I have way to many calls, emails, texts, PM and conversations that seem to be extra critical of cyclists. I was asked to share some messages by different people, organizations and government agencies that asked for cyclists to be more considerate and it resulted in me being slammed by some in the cycling community. In case anyone had a question, my life has been dedicated for almost a decade to promoting cycling and my interest is in doing everything to promote bikes and outdoor recreation. However, I am not “the Man” and it is not my job to try and police the community, but I will continue to share this message “Be KIND and Don’t be THAT GUY”.

On a plus side I received this note from NOAO and it’s nice knowing people are encouraging others to keep an eye out for us.

“Since Spring is in the air, we need to be aware of the increase in bicycle and motorcycle traffic sharing the roads with us. Bicycle and motorcycle accidents are on the rise and we need to keep a watchful eye out for the two-wheeled riders! When making turns, take a second look to make sure you didn’t miss one of these vehicles!

“There are blind spots, and motorcycles and bicycles have a tendency to hide in those little tiny blind spots.”

For those of you driving to or from Kitt Peak, there are bicycle racing teams taking advantage of racing up the mountain road and then cruising down. Be aware of theses folks and share the road with them! Also we have many motorcyclists coming up to visit Kitt Peak.

Be aware and keep everyone safe! Drive Aware! Ride Aware!”

I’m still trying to catch up, as you can see I’m working on the list at 10 on a Friday night. I hope you have a chance to get out and ride this week. The weather is perfect and your bike needs the exercise. I

Monday we have a meeting for the Velodrome. I have an idea that I’m really excited about that could potentially get a Velodrome downtown and way ahead of any prior schedule. I’ve been talking with people all over the country and if the numbers ink out, I’m optimistic we can do it as soon as this winter or next year. Again, just an idea I have, but it seems plausible. Details to follow if the others on the committee buy into the concept.

Registration for the Tucson Bicycle Classic closes on Monday. This 3 day race is the best racing in Southern Arizona all year. I’ll be there all three days taking photos.

This week the county installed a new stop sign on Mission Road at Los Reales. This is about a mile after “the Shootout” usually starts to hammer heading south. I’ve heard various ideas of how the ride should adjust for the new stop sign. What seems to make the most sense to me is to keep the roll out until a few hundred meters after the stop sign. This will allow everyone to come to a legal stop and not feel like they are being dropped before the ride really starts.

I’m sure that I’ll be writing more about The Shootout in the months to come, but this weekend I’ll be off at the Tolero Crit. There are races from Jr’s all the way up. The action starts at 8AM and goes all day. It’s fun to watch and if you find yourself on the Northwest side of town it is worth checking out. It is as Casas Church at 10801 North La Cholla.
