Homestretch Foundation- Spin with the Stretchies

From December through May, The Homestretch Foundation hosts “Spin with the Stretchies” group ride: Friday mornings, open to all Tucson cyclists. An easy, recovery-pace ride (15mph/22kph maximum speed!), 15 mile ride around the flat neighborhoods of Northeast Tucson, giving local/visiting cyclists a chance to chat, laugh and interact with “The Stretchies,” our pro/elite cyclists in residence at Homestretch Foundation. We ride for 60min then hang out at Le Buzz for post-ride coffee & treats. Easy pace, no drop, everyone welcome. You must wear a helmet and be comfortable riding two abreast. We start/finish at the original Le Buzz Caffe @ 9191 E Tanque Verde Rd.

December 1 through April 30th: 10a depart
May 1 – 15th: 9a depart

Rain protocol: If it’s raining lightly, we ride! If it’s raining nasty, we stay in and have coffee together at Le Buzz! Either way, it’s on.

The Homestretch Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides temporary housing and other resources to professional or elite athletes—primarily female athletes—who face financial and economic discrepancies. In support of our mission, Homestretch Foundation:

* Assists low-income female professional athletes with free housing
* Bridges the wage gap of salary inequity for women in all occupations
* Provides resources and networking for post-athletic careers
* Provides opportunities for our members to thrive in their post-athletic careers
* Allows donors/members to book our facility in the off-season

Bike Ride List December 04, 2022

We had some rainy days so I BEEFED up the ride list!

It is the most comprehensive event list for the Southwest and four corner states (and So Cal) for 2023. I’m saying this as I spent two days scouring the internet and in so doing discovered some other lists that are really good, but not at this level. Like the Borg, I have integrated all of the other lists and found links to each event. It includes Road, Mountain Bike, Gravel, Cyclocross, Bike Packing, BMX, Fat Bikes, Track, Downhill and Enduro. Over 140 races/events to choose from. It’s still a work in progress and will continue to grow as I discover new events.

This coming weekend Is one of the top five Cycling Related Events in Tucson that brings all of these groups together. It is the BICAS art Auction.Come support BICAS and help decorate your home and yard in the most classic and timeless style, Bike Art! In case you did not know, I do this list because I have a passion for cycling, but it does not pay any bills. These rides are not mine. I am only sharing the data. The Damion Alexander Team can’t guarantee anybody’s safety. There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should pay attention and take reasonable precautions. I always use a helmet. I think that helmets should be required when riding. If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in one ear or use a bone conducting system. Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud. Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others. Please also ride within your limitations. You are not racing the Tour de France. If you see someone that is not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention. Do this for your and everybody’s safety.

Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws. We are not lemmings. Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow. Use your head and enjoy your ride.

One of my favorite events is finally returning and I’m most excited to announce the return of the BICAS art auction. The BICAS Annual Art Auction needs your help to prepare for this amazing community event. BICAS is seeking bicycle-inspired artworks & art created from bicycle parts. All mediums are accepted as long as it’s bike-themed! This is a great opportunity for artists to show off their art while donating to a good cause. To donate include your name and contact info. It’s been a hot minute since I put out the ride list. It seemed that every time I was about to do it there was a spike in COVID. Even though the risk of getting Covid on a bike was unlikely, to me, encouraging people to gather was not the responsible to do. At some point, we need to all go on living our lives and while some people may not be interested in being in a group of any sort, I feel that it is past time to give others the option to meet. Since it’s been sometime the list is somewhat anemic. Many of the weekly rides stopped for COVID and never started again. If you know of a ride that’s not on the list, please contact me. These rides are not mine. I am only sharing the data. The Damion Alexander Team can’t guarantee anybody’s safety.  There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should pay attention and take reasonable precautions.  I always use a helmet. I think that helmets should be required when riding.  If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in one ear or use a bone conducting system. Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud.  Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others.  Please also ride within your limitations. You are not racing the Tour de France.  If you see someone that is not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention.  Do this for your and everybody’s safety. 

Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws.  We are not lemmings.  Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow.  Use your head and enjoy your ride.

It’s Mountain Bike season in the Old Pueblo as many people are gearing up for the 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo. Need wood for your camp site? I had to take down a eucalyptus tree last year and have seasoned wood. If you need some, feel free to drop me a line.

I said this in the last ride list, but feel compelled to restate it. I’m reticent about putting out the ride list with COVID on the rise, but feel it’s your choice if you want to be in a group. I do hope that those who are feeling any symptoms avoid groups and if the ride heads inside for beverages you respect social distancing and local laws on masks.

In creating this list I’m amazed how many rides are still not happening. Others are back, but have asked not to publicly share at this time. The Run Tucson, Tucson Medical Center Trail Challenge is a walking, running, hiking event from February 21st, 2021 – March 7, 2021 that was created due to COVID-19 to encourage and motivate people everywhere to get off the couch, outside, active and to share the experience in a safe virtual setting. The Damion Alexander Team is creating videos of different trails and Tucson running personalities to give some additional motivation (SEE LINKS BELOW)

Another fun component of the TMC trail challenge is the The trail challenge photo contest. Categories will include: Nature, Wildlife, Action, Urban, and Selfie. The winner of each category will receive a $50 gift card for use at any one of the following local restaurants: Reforma Modern Mexican, Union Public House, and Proof Artisanal Pizza and Pasta. Winners also receive a trail running photo shoot from Run Tucson and The Tucson Photography Festival sponsors “The Damion Alexander Team”.

The Joys of Riding in the Summer.

When the temperatures climb into the 100’s many in Tucson abandon their bikes for the cooler confines of air condition. Personally, I find the summer offers some of the best riding. Two of my regular rides start 5:20AM on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The sun is up, my gear is only a bib, jersey and 2 water bottles. I can go from my 2^nd snooze button to my ride in under 5 minutes. It definitely beats the winter regime of waking in pitch dark, charging riding lights, layers, more layers, full gloves, and those ever pesky frozen toes.

I Put together my top reasons why I love riding in the summer.

10- Snow Birds have flown north and the roads are less congested and feel safer.

9- No need for lights when you start at 5:00AM

8- All you need is a bib and jersey or shorts and a tee-shirt.

7- Prior to Monsoons there is little debris on the roads.

6- Night Riding is Perfect . Among my favorite night rides are the Tuesday Night Ride, Full Moon Rides In Sabino Canyon and all Mountain Biking.

5- Vacations in Colorado. Mountain passes over 12,000 feet, long and steep dirt descents, single track, gentle afternoon rains, “that mud stripe”, waterfalls, river walk trails along rivers that flow.

4- Everlasting dawn as a full Moon gently gives way to the rising sun on the only morning I’ve ever made it to the top of Stewart Observatory without being passed. (Granted, I did start at 3:30AM.)

3- Mt. Lemmon, especially after Windy Vista and definitely after Palisades. Meeting the wife and kids on Mt. Lemmon for picnics.

2- The smell of creosote and the desert after a Monsoon, especially in Saguaro East.

1- Quality time to ride with the kids.

This coming Wednesday at 5:00PM is one of the most important rides of the year and I really hope you can make it. Please bring you friends, family, acquaintances, the guy you meet riding this weekend and your entire cycling team. It is the Ride of Silence. I get it, none of us want to think of the dangers posed by riding on the road. This ride forces us to confront that reality. However, it is also an opportunity for us to show the rest of the community we have a right to ride on the streets and that they should be looking out for us.

If you have not heard, the Arizona State Legislators again failed to send a bill to the Governor that would ban texting while driving. Arizona is the only state that has not enacted a law. This Ride of Silence is also a message to the elected officials. The media will be there. If we have a HUGE turnout the visual is so much stronger in the news. So, PLEASE attend. It is only a five mile ride, but the impact may actually save your life of someone you know and care about. There will be Pizza provided by Papa Johns after the ride.

One of my favorite events of the year is this Sunday. It is CYCLOVIA TUCSON. They have a new route, on the South side of town. What I love about this event is it introduces us to areas we might not otherwise explore. Personally, I’ll be taking The Loop down after the TMC Get Moving Tucson 5K and Half Marathon. In addition to this list I also have been known to take a few photos here and there of events around the Old Pueblo. With Halloween this coming week I expect to see lots of fun costumes and big SMILES.
