You are welcome to join us for food after the ride. This week we will go to Margies Kitchen after the ride.

Please review the route before the ride Start and load the route into your bicycle computer or your smart phone or print a copy of the cue sheet.
To participate in this GABA group ride you MUST:

  1. Be willing to ride at a social pace (end of ride social pace 13-15 MPH).
  2. Be willing to serve as the ride sweep for a portion of the ride.
  3. Use the phrase “walker/bike up” when overtaking someone.
  4. Use the phrase “walker/bike left” when approaching someone coming at us. This should be used when on narrow parts of multiuse paths.
  5. Stay right of the center line on multiuse paths and right of the white line while on the road except to pass.
  6. Give at least 3 feet when passing someone walking or riding in the same direction.
IMPORTANT: If you have not ridden with Wayne within the last 12 months, please send your contact information (Name, phone number, emergency contact, emergency contact phone number (NOT 911) to Wayne at wayne.cullop@gmail.com. The ride waiver will be filled out prior to the ride, you will just need to verify the information and sign it.
The end-of-ride average speed is expected to be between 13 and 15 MPH. If you are not comfortable or not capable with this expected pace average over the entire route, please do not participate in this ride, it is not fair to the other riders*.* This is a social ride, lots of conversations, and regroupings as we will not drop anyone. Riders are expected to ride at the pace of the ride leader and between the ride leader and the sweep.
If you sign up for the ride and are running a couple of minutes late call (DO NOT TEXT) the ride leader: Wayne’s is 520 977 3018. We will wait up to five minutes before leaving.
    What to Bring:
    • Food & fluids for 3 hours – 2 24oz Bottles or Hydration Pack.
    • Bring a tube/patch kit and a way to inflate your tires.
    • Be sure your bike is in good mechanical condition.
    • CPSC approved helmets must always be worn while riding.
    • No ear buds! This is a safety requirement, not a request.
If you are riding, I ask that you agree that:
    • You will obey traffic laws. Drive your bike as you would your car.
    • You are a representative of the greater cycling community and will therefore conduct yourself appropriately.
    • You will represent GABA well.
    • While on the Loop, you will respect others on the Loop. You will take care when passing pedestrians and other cyclists: ring your bell or call out “Passing” or “Good morning!” before passing
    • This is not a “training” or “intensive” ride – this is a social, no drop, base building ride.
    • If any of these standards are unclear, you will ask for clarification.
    • Route subject to change based upon, weather, road conditions, group requests, and or the ride leader getting lost.
If you have comments about this ride or would like to make suggestions for future Tuesday / Thursday Social Rides routes, please email Bob and Wayne at
    rmwillman@yahoo.com
    wayne.cullop@gmail.com

Bicycle Ranch Roundup

Join us on one of our Saturday morning group rides.  They are very popular with the local cycling community and the regulars range in ability from racers to enthusiasts out for a fun ride.

If you have never ridden in a large group before, it can be intimidating.  If you need some pointers or additional assistance, we will be glad to help.  Our goal is to make your ride as enjoyable as possible.

Join our Strava club and compare your efforts to other Roundup riders. You can find our club here.

If you have never ridden in a large group before, it can be intimidating.  If you need some pointers or additional assistance, we will be glad to help.
Main RoundUp Group : 55.5miles at 18 -22+ mph.  There are always splits and smaller groups forming.

“All store rides are designed to promote the enjoyment of cycling in a friendly group atmosphere.”

Time will change to 7:00 in late October or early November

The Ride List

I’m ambitious for making the best and most detailed ride and event list in the four corner states. The content is great, but I know that the format of this has room to improve (OK, it sucks) so I’ve been researching the best online calendars and hope to have all of the rides listed below uploaded in the next few weeks.  For now, the old format. TONS of events for the first 4 months of the year.  Still have not done any Utah rides and if you see anything that I’m missing, please let me know.

In case you did not know, I do this list because I have a passion for cycling, but it does not pay any bills. In order to find the time to do this list all I ask is if you are thinking of buying or selling real estate, or know someone who is, please let me know. Real Estate pays the bills and I can either do traditional real estate marketing like sitting open houses and making cold calls, or provide an actual service, like this ride list. Please and Thanks.

If you know of a ride that’s not on the list, please contact me. Best is text 520-977-5664 or email damion@damionalexander.com.

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves. Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

RIDE AND EVENT DISCLAIMER

These rides are not mine.  I am only sharing the data.  The Damion Alexander Team can’t guarantee anybody’s safety.  There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should pay attention and take reasonable precautions.  I always use a helmet.  I think that helmets should be required when riding.  If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in one ear or use a bone conducting system.  Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud.  Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others.  Please also ride within your limitations. You are not racing the Tour de France.  If you see someone  that is  not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention.  Do this for your and everybody’s safety.

Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws.  We are not lemmings.  Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow.  Use your head and enjoy your ride.

THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM, DAMION ALEXANDER, AND ANYONE ELSE WHO CONTRIBUTES TO THIS LIST SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY ACCIDENT OR INJURY THAT OCCURS ON THSES RIDES.  EVERY PERSON IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS AROUND THEM

WHERE DO ALL THE RIDES COME FROM?  These links and shops and clubs and teams and facebook and YOU.  See a ride that is missing.  Please let me know  Damion@DamionAlexadner.com.  Thanks

This list is a major time commitment and it is my pleasure to put it together.  All I ask in return for the list is that you remember I’m A REALTOR.  If you have a relationship with another REALTOR, I love loyalty and respect those relationships.  However, if not, or if you need a second opinion, Please keep me in mind.  Many agents spend money advertising for new business, others sit open houses or cold call.  My business is based on referrals from past clients and friends.  The less time I have to do traditional prospecting the more I can do for the cycling community.  For example: this list.

THIS LIST IS PROVIDED AT A COURTESY OF THE DAMION ALEXANDER TEAM.  THIS LIST IS DEEMED RELIABLE, BUT NOT GUARANTEED.  WHEN POSSIBLE, CONTACT INFORMATION FOR THE GROUP RIDERS ARE PROVIDED.  TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND DOUBLE CHECK OR GO TO THE RIDE AND IF NO ONE IS THERE, GO RIDE BY YOURSELF.

Community Bike Rides May 12-18 2018

This coming Wednesday at 5:00PM is one of the most important rides of the year and I really hope you can make it. Please bring you friends, family, acquaintances, the guy you meet riding this weekend and your entire cycling team. It is the Ride of Silence. I get it, none of us want to think of the dangers posed by riding on the road. This ride forces us to confront that reality.  However, it is also an opportunity for us to show the rest of the community we have a right to ride on the streets and that they should be looking out for us.

If you have not heard, the Arizona State Legislators again failed to send a bill to the Governor that would ban texting while driving. Arizona is the only state that has not enacted a law. This Ride of Silence is also a message to the elected officials. The media will be there. If we have a HUGE turnout the visual is so much stronger in the news. So, PLEASE attend. It is only a five mile ride, but the impact may actually save your life of someone you know and care about.  There will be Pizza provided by Papa Johns after the ride.

Have you ever done a group ride, race or run in Southern Arizona?  If so, the chances are that I have a photo of you at the event. My son, Samuel, and I have created a page for all the images we capture. If you have not seen it, check it out https://thetucsonphotographer.smugmug.com/   The last event I posted was from the GABA Mt. Lemmon Hill climb. https://thetucsonphotographer.smugmug.com/Sports/Cycling/Large-Group-Rides-Not-races/GABA-Hill-Climb-2018/

Damion

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

RIDE AND EVENT DISCLAIMER

These rides are not mine.  I am only sharing the data.  The Damion Alexander Team  cannot guarantee anybody’s safety.  There are unknown and unforeseen potential hazards in every ride so you should  pay attention and take reasonable precautions.  I always use a helmet.  I think that Helmets are required when riding.  If you choose to listen to music during rides you should only use the headset in the right ear and keep the headset out of the left ear. Better yet, buy a FarEnd Gear earbud.  Communication is essential during all rides and having the ability to hear is a part of your responsibility to others.  Please also ride within your limitations. You are  not racing the Tour de France.  If you see someone  that is  not riding within their limitations or are becoming a hazard to others we should politely bring this to their your attention  Dothis for your and everybody’s safety.

Community Ride List Oct 28- Nov 3

One of my favorite events of the year is this Sunday. It is CYCLOVIA TUCSON. They have a new route, on the South side of town. What I love about this event is it introduces us to areas we might not otherwise explore. Personally, I’ll be taking The Loop down after the TMC Get Moving Tucson 5K and Half Marathon. In addition to this list I also have been known to take a few photos here and there of events around the Old Pueblo. With Halloween this coming week I expect to see lots of fun costumes and big SMILES.

I’m still raising funds for the beneficiaries of El Tour De Tucson. Like this list? If so, a donation to any of these charities will be greatly appreciated. https://bikepilgrim.com/?p=998

Did you miss the deadline for registering for el tour prior to the increased processing fee? Union Public House and Reforma, the official restaurants of El Tour Still have a discount code, but it ends on Halloween. On November 1, the processing fee increases again!  https://tinyurl.com/UnionPublicHouseElTourDiscount

As the weather hits the perfect cycling temperatures and all your friends decide they are moving here, please send them to The Damion Alexander Team for all your real estate needs. It is greatly appreciated and your support allows me to do this list and all the other cycling advocacy.

Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws.  We are not lemmings.  Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow.  Use your head and enjoy your ride.

Testing Bolle “The One” Helmet

I like bikes. Actually, it’s more of a love.  It does not matter to me if it’s an old cruiser, 26, 27.5, 29, 650b, 700c , skinny, fat or plus wheels, I like them all. I’m just happy when I’m pedaling.  Many of these fine iron horses are great when used for their intended use and with the correct gear. However, if you show up for the Saturday morning shop ride that averages 25 miles an hour on a single speed mountain bike, it’s just not going to work out very well for you.

It’s not only the bike that needs to be considered, but the gear as well. Since I love all bikes and am just as likely to be found riding in the desert through washes on a 29 plus as I am to be swinging a mallet playing bike polo or chasing after El Grupo Youth Cycling on the Shootout, I feel like I need the appropriate attire for each of these rides.  I often find that I have a limited bike budget, a lack of storage and a deep belief that I don’t need more stuff. With that in mind I’m always on the lookout for items I can use with all of my bikes.

One product that I use 100% of the time when I ride, but typically is somewhat specific to each discipline is a helmet. I’ve been on the lookout for one that can be used in every situation. My ideal helmet would first and foremost be comfortable. It does not matter how many gadgets they incorporate, if it does not feel good, I’ll never wear it. It is nice if it feels as light as a feather, but that’s less of a concern for me as if it just feels good. As I often Mountain bike, a visor is great, but it should be easily removable for road rides. Tucson gets a little warm in the summer, so ventilation really matters, but on winter mornings I often start rides before sunrise in the 30’s, so it needs to be able to accommodate a beanie underneath.  Since I ride in the dark, Integrated lights would be a nice touch. Finally, my wife is always concerned about me riding and asks me to wear a road Id, but I forget it, so I’d like to incorporate my vital info into the helmet. Finally, I still have other toys I “need” so it should be reasonably priced.

Is this really too much to ask from one product? I thought so, but apparently, Bolle thought this was a good wish list and made the “One Road Helmet”. Not only does it have every feature I mentioned but it also has a removable “Areo Shell” if you want to shave a few seconds off, a built in rear LED, Safety QR Code, summer and winter liners, removable visor, sunglass garage, and it only weights in at 280g/ 9.8 OZ.  The best part is it only cost $130.00 without the area panels and $170.00 with them.

Community Ride List… Now with even more upcoming events and races

I put in a few extra hours this week searching for races and events for the next year. Please let me know if I missed anything

I think Cycling season in Tucson is year round, but for many, it starts in the months leading up to El Tour De Tucson. It is apparent on the roads and the Loop that each weekend more people are pumping up the tires, lubing the chains and getting ready for the largest perimeter cycling event in the country. Next weekend is the official kick off for El Tour Season with the 2nd Annual El Tour Loop the Loop. The fun will on the 16th is from 6:30 – 10:30 a.m and has all sorts of fun and activities all around the Loop.  Don’t forget the after party (11 – 1) at St. Phillips Plaza, on the Loop at River and Campbell.

There are a few advocacy groups in Tucson that are really getting some solid work done for the Cycling Community. As far as Mountain Bikes go, Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists(SDMB), they have so many projects in the works I don’t have enough room to mention them all, but they include new trails from Vail to Oro Valley and all over the West side. I’ll do a separate blog on all of them on BikePilgrim.Com. All of this work can’t happen without funding. I recommend becoming a member of SDMB and buy some tickets for the Super Ultra Mega Raffle where you can win a pivot bike and other incredible prizes. Pick up a ticket at September 13th from 6-9 at Brushfire BBQ.

Damion

I DID NOT CONFIRM EVERY TIME, but did get in touch with most of the ride leaders and shops.  You should always verify times before you head out and remember these ride times are when the ride leaves.  Please show up as early as needed to make sure you are ready to roll out at the time posted.

Community Ride List May 27 – June 2

Somewhere between the bike ride and the hot dogs, I hope you take a few minutes to reflect on why we have this three day weekend.  My heart felt condolences to all who have lost a loved one in the service of our country and my gratitude to all who have served.

_________________________________________________________________________ Update on the appeal to the zoning interpretations the WAPA trail access to Honeybee. Both the HOA and My Appeal are at an agreed standstill through the end of 2017, meaning the trail remains open to Rancho Vistoso Residents through the end of this year. Hopefully, if we continue to show respect for the neighbors this will become permanent. Respect means being quiet while you are riding by the homes, and not shining lights into backyards. We definitely are moving into summer night riding season, so if you must ride the trail consider taking a second low lumen light until you get past all homes. If you’re going out in a group I highly recommend using the church access route.

On a different note of access to the trails,The Town of Oro Valley, SDMB, the county are diligently working on The big wash route. I would encourage people to continue to show up at the city Council meetings for the call of the audience and say how important this is. A constant presence keeps it on The councilmembers mind. Up to the state land it looks like we may have a trail that we can start building as soon as this summer. The temporary trailhead has been approved and there is hope to finalize it late this year early next year. When the time comes it’ll be very important for us to be vocal about what we want to see if the trailhead.

Also, it is everybody’s responsibility to follow all traffic laws.  We are not lemmings.  Just because somebody does something foolish does not mean you need to follow.  Use your head and enjoy your ride.

Community ride list June 11-18

In the last ride list I was so excited about the low temperatures, but said “of course, it will likely jump into a record high the following week with temps in the 120’s just to bring us back to reality.”  Well, I was off by 8 degrees as we only hit 112.  It was the second earliest it has hit 110 in history.

I’m skipping past anything on global warming and heading for ideas of coping with the heat.

I have been putting in more miles now than at any point this year and have a secrets for dealing with the heat.  If you have a bathtub, fill it up and leave it full.  It will drop to room temperature.  A post ride dunk is the difference between being able to function the rest of the day or being a blob.  It refreshes both the mind and body.

Other tricks that work include starting your ride in the dark so you are done before 8AM, night rides, keeping hydrated, heading up Mt. Lemmon or to any state north of Arizona.
